  1. isn't it child endangerment to leave a 5 year old in the care of a complete stranger? I mean I think your entire argument is pointless and is really detracting from this mother hearing valuable input from this thread but, just because I find it hard to resist, you just chalked ole mom up for some endangerment. mrnn
  2. So it was OK for you to go all "Momma Bear" on this guy when you felt he endangered/hurt your son but the fact that the dude went all "lion king" on your son when he endangered/hurt his kid is immaterial? I promise you, as a father of 3 kids, if I feel that your child hurts or endangers my child with some numbskull move like pushing them off a dock right in front of me, I really don't give 2 sh*ts what you think about me yelling or spanking your kid in return. My family's well-being will always come before your opinion of me and what I do. My daughter is nearly 5 and can't swim....I
  3. I thought this was a beer thread yet I keep reading mentions of piss colored waters like Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, etc...not sure what they have to do with beer? There are soooo many delicious craft beers brewed all over this country that one should be embarrassed to admit drinking the nasty macros. Sweetwater, Stone, Bells, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, Victory...all great breweries with distribution here in GA. I'm a hop head through and through....the more biting hops the more I like the beer. At the grocery store I'm buying either Sweetwater IPA, Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA,
  4. The faux outrage over this census is absolutely laughable. This is the opportunity for all the Palin-ites, Bachmann-ists, Tea Party lunatics to act like they're Mr. or Mrs. Look At Me I Thumbed My Nose At A Government Worker. They're suddenly self-appointed constitutional scholars who, despite their overwhelming support for such truly invasive measures like the Patriot Act, are suddenly concerned about handing over their race and birth dates. Really? And you're doing this with a straight face? Could your insincerity be any more obvious? But hey, I'm sure when Junior was standing beh
  5. The census is extremely important and is worth every dime they spend on it. Our county's school situation has little to do with how federal money is spent...our BOE has already spent their federal education dollars. mrnn
  6. A golf driving range/training facility. I can't believe that there's not a driving range around here that doesn't belong to a golf course. The golf courses rip you off. mrnn
  7. Being in the telecom field during the early 00's, I'm verrry familiar with layoffs. The company I worked at from 2000-2005, before we got bought out, had 14 rounds of layoffs in 5 years. Luckily I was never affected but, point being, it is very common for those in more senior positions to take lower positions while those currently in the lower positions are shown the door. It always ticked me off because a lot of the time those that were demoted would actually KEEP their same pay. Never understood it. I don't think that the BOE admin folks are really gaming the system, I just think that t
  8. That really struck me as an odd number to throw out there. I find it very difficult to believe that only 10% of their budget is enough to cover utilities, equipment (computers, copiers, etc.), supplies, transportation, training, etc. I mean according to their numbers that's 3.6M total for all of those things...that sounds REALLY low. If I'm to believe that 90% of their budget goes to salaries than I'm also forced to believe that they really do have too many employees or those employees make too much money. But I don't believe teachers are overpaid (perhaps administrators?) nor do I be
  9. Do you recommend waking up every homeless person you see on a sidewalk to make sure they're not dead? Because, in this case, there was no evidence of blood/injury...he just looked like a homeless dude laying on the sidewalk. mrnn
  10. You're killin' me with the avatars, BS! The last one was bad and now you somehow managed to take a step further. As far as the layoffs go, this stinks....especially because as the economy recovers they'll quickly get close to receiving revenues more in line with the levels under which these budgets were originally created. I suppose that means that they'll be hiring again in the next couple of years but that's a couple of years of valuable experience that these teachers will be missing out on. mrnn
  11. I too work downtown in a pretty shady area (luckily they've cleaned it up greatly) and there is no way in hell I'm messing with someone laying on a sidewalk at 5 or 6 am unless I see blood. If it's late and dark and I'm walking outside near my office I keep my eyes looking straight and walk briskly to get where I need to go. It was the same way up in Chicago when we'd be in the city at night in suspect areas....it's just the way it is in any city. Honestly, I'm kind of shocked that a dude who literally lived on the streets such as this cat was stupid enough to get involved in the crime. Mo
  12. So if you don't count the "eliminate local supplement for certified personnel", whatever that is, that's worth 10.5M, the remaining cuts add up to 31M. They need to cut 22M so to make their goal a whole lot of those will have to be enacted (assuming the supplement stays in place). If the supplement stays and these drastic ones stay in place: Additional Considerations: • 147 day modified calendar (four day school week) ($2.45 million, based on previous study) • 160 day modified calendar ($1.14 million, based on previous study) • Eliminate Kindergarten paraprofessionals ($2.3 million
  13. While I can appreciate the point of the question (who the hell would want all government?), it's just not a plausible choice...at all. Who is going to buy national security? Who is going to build and maintain roadways? Who is going to build water departments for low income areas? Electricity for rural areas? Internet for rural areas? There are many things that don't offer anything close to a profit for a private business whereas government can offer subsidies to encourage private investment or build the infrastructure themselves via contractors. Government, in theory, works
  14. These guys sell some top notch meat at such a fair price...it makes me feel guilty when I buy a steak from another store. I wish they'd make some sausages, the only thing that's missing. As a displaced upper-midwest yankee the one thing I miss down here are top quality brats, italian sausage links, etc... Johnsonville just doesn't do it for me and I just know that West Metro has the skillz to probably put out a pretty good product. mrnn
  15. Wife picked me up some creole from there a couple weeks ago.....I couldn't even finish it. It was blander than bland, had like 7 little pieces of andouille in a big bowl but more chicken than you could shake a stick at. One of the things I enjoy about cajun food is the spices, maybe not always bringing the heat, but atleast spices that wake your mouth up....this had none. The garlic bread that came with it had more flavor than my creole. I'll have a difficult time trying this place again which is a shame because I was really excited to hear a cajun place opened up right down the road.
  16. I believe she'll need to be licensed (minimum CNA) in order to qualify for Medicare payment. mrnn
  17. That's the exact same thing that popped in my head after seeing his picture and reading the article. mrnn
  18. Seems to me that any nation facing trillions of dollars of debt shouldn't be wasting billions of dollars annually fighting things that people choose to ingest by their own free will. mrnn
  19. Anyone shop at Harry's? Curious what percentage of an increase in cost you see on your bill compared to wherever you used to shop. mrnn
  20. Take the other gig and, considering you apparently still have some in-roads there, see about bringing your friend from your current job over with you at some point in the near future. On the other hand, if this is a step in your career path and you feel you're receiving valuable experience where you're at while the other job would take you off of that path, well, it might be time to just suck it up and do your time where you're at. Hopefully in a couple years you'll be able to transfer to another company that falls within your career path. If you're just working a "job" now with no lon
  21. Shouldn't these guys be studying budgets for their broke ass state instead of legislating something as minor as the language of a driver's license test? mrnn
  22. when the UPS drivers start wearing shorts mrnn
  23. They should get back on their feet and then worry about paying credit card companies. If they can't make the credit card payments what makes them think they can make the loan payments? Their credit is already ruined so making the cards wait a few months isn't going to make a bit of difference....they'll be able to settle the debt at a later date. mrnn
  24. When did the post office get rid of their automated stamp machine?!?! Wasted half an hour riding there and home and accomplished nothing. I thought every post office had one of the machines?
