  1. There was an essay written recently in Slate Magazine about something I've seen firsthand. I won't get too much into the discussion of it yet, but am curious if others have seen this with their aging parents and/or friends? http://www.salon.com/2014/02/27/i_lost_my_dad_to_fox_news_how_a_generation_was_captured_by_thrashing_hysteria/ I know this could be considered political, and if it needs to be moved so be it....I'm not looking so much at the politics as I am the social effects in our communities and families. mrnn
  2. You do realize that Jordan is doing airstrikes, right? You do know that 80% of the airstrikes on ISIS targets have (and continue to be) performed by the US Military, right? If anything, Jordan was late to the party that the US was already at. American forces have killed thousands of ISIS militants in the last couple of months. So what you're really saying is not that you wish we were doing what Jordan is doing but, rather, that you wish you knew that we are already doing what Jordan is doing. Not that you'll give the "Muslim President" any credit mrnn
  3. Incredibly sad news. In CC's defense, this thread was opened prior to Simon's death. mrnn
  4. Bill Maher hates Muslims and is a strong supporter of gun rights. He sings to his own tune. You'd probably agree with a lot of what he says while, of course, disagreeing with a lot of other stuff he says. The Daily Show, and Jon Stewart in particular, isn't a hard news source and doesn't pretend to be. What they do excel at is discussing the news and pointing out the hypocrisy and non-linearity of the news cycle. The last several years, the show is not a "gimicky" kind of funny, the humor is derived from merely presenting the news in an historical light. Nearly every night they'll sh
  5. To your credit, Surepip, you're the only person who is against the airport who has been on this board for years explaining what you would do to bring industry here. You're not anti-growth, which certainly lends credibility to your opinions (imo). It seems many of the others just oppose anything and everything that would in any way change this county. mrnn
  6. Who was responsible for KSU and GHC coming to downtown Dallas? mrnn
  7. I've only lived here for just over 8 years so, no. I'm only aware of two projects (airport and studio) that would be considered projects they actually own...their other work revolves around bringing businesses to Paulding, which has happened. The IBA is, figuratively, a business. They sell a product and they use tax dollars to do it, be it through literal investment of tax dollars or via offering tax breaks to potential clients. If you don't understand the role of the IBA, it's wholly understandable why you're so frustrated by them. ETA: Vis a vis the film studio, I agree that it
  8. While I wouldn't have used county funds to pay for a film studio, I do appreciate the efforts of our county to at least try to do something to bring jobs and money to this county. The film industry was/is here in the ATL area A LOT, so it's not as if this was building a film studio in the middle of Kansas. It hasn't worked out, partially due to other film studios in the Metro popping up. Now you want to complain because they're looking to unload it? Would you prefer to keep paying for the empty building or are you complaining to throw out an "I told you so!"? The status quo will never
  9. Bixby Canyon is north of San Fran, isn't it? mrnn
  10. Color me green with envy. I've always wanted to take that trip. The Bixby Canyon Bridge at Big Sur is surely something you'll enjoy seeing. The cabin that Jack Kerouac stayed in while writing the novel "Big Sur", a favorite of mine, is in the woods near the bridge at the bottom of the canyon. Enjoy! mrnn
  11. So you think it's an issue of race or ethnicity more than religion? You believe that because Finland and Japan have rather homogenous societies in contrast to the melting pot that is America, they are therefore less violent? Take a look at any middle Eastern country. Take a look at any African country (outside S.A.). Those countries are homogenous as well, yet extraordinarily violent. Religion causes the problems in those countries, not the skin color of their citizens. I don't want to discount your opinions, I'm just trying to understand how you can look past religion as a source
  12. Obviously education has much to do with the issues you've mentioned, and others have done a great job covering that issue. Companies and government outsource to contractors in many cases because they don't have to pay benefits. It actually works a lot of the time because the contractors, themselves, are making higher wages, and the organization outsourcing is saving on the entire benefits package. I've only done contractor work once in my life and was eventually hired on full-time. I took a $10k loss in salary going permanent, but gained a full benefits package. While this might have w
  13. Outside of secularism, what do Japan and Finland have in common, culturally? They both have top-notch education which, I suppose, could be considered a cultural parallel. But if solid primary and secondary education results in a relatively "peaceful" society, one can just as easily say that it results in a relatively secular society. There's a very strong parallel between level of education and religiosity here in America so I don't find it out-of-bounds to think that Japan and Finland, with their strong education systems, are seeing the same results (secularism). Another question woul
  14. I think you'll enjoy reading this op-ed written in response to a study on non-religious households. It makes me proud as a parent who, like you, doesn't/didn't instill spirituality in my children. http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0115-zuckerman-secular-parenting-20150115-story.html#page=1 Here's one excerpt that is especially relevant to krwillis's original post (though the entire article is relevant): "One telling fact from the criminology field: Atheists were almost absent from our prison population as of the late 1990s, comprising less than half of 1% of those behind
  15. The idea that non-religious people are immoral and without a life compass, basically wandering around aimlessly with no purpose in life, leading to addiction and crime. Or the idea that this country is lost because of some "loss of religion" (even though this country is overwhelmingly Christian). My teenage son isn't a believer either. I've always hidden my beliefs from my kids because I think they should make up their own minds (not to mention my christian wife would whoop my ass). He came to this conclusion on his own and, being the young guy he is, hasn't exactly developed any kind o
  16. TOPIC SPLIT It was recommended that this post become a topic of its own rather than being an off-topic thread in the Bobbi Kristina topic. I'm leaving it in the cafe even though it is technically religious because that is where it was in the context. After all, the religious forum is more for proselytizing and this is just discussion. pubby This is a pretty offensive post, FYI. mrnn
  17. I think I know his former roommate. mrnn
  18. Dude, you missed one....."rant" is spelled "ran" in my post. Have you ever heard of School District 308 in Illinois? Probably not but, nonetheless, it's a pretty great school district (mainly because I was raised in the district). Do you know what happened in May of '86? I, mrnn, won the District 308 Annual Spelling Bee. Took home the ole' gold (plastic) spelling bee trophy and a $100 US Savings Bond. Yuuuupppp....pretty badass....the other 5th grade girls were drooling after I won (not sure if it was because their mouths were full braces or my spelling prowess, but I'm going with th
  19. That was one of the things discussed in the article....they asked these 12-step rehabs why they wouldn't offer a prescription that is proven to work and they consistently replied that the prescription treatment is antithetical to the entirety of their abstinence based programs. They can't preach abstinence after giving you a pill in the morning. It makes little sense, to me. mrnn
  20. Here's a very long, but interesting article about heroin addiction treatment http://projects.huffingtonpost.com/dying-to-be-free-heroin-treatment The gist of the article revolves around a drug treatment called suboxone. It's similar to methodone but without any "high" and, in fact, causes very negative reactions if an addict tries shooting heroin while taking the med. While this sounds like a great treatment, and has shown immense success, treatment centers often do not offer the prescription because they are advocates of the 12-step programs created by AA and used by the groups you'
  21. The little emoticon, with the tongue sticking out of a grin, means I was trucking with you. A joke. Why are you always trying to bait people? Are you that bored? mrnn
