It's not that hard to get a SS#. The SS administration publishes the numbers of deceased people. The armed services don't use "service numbers" anymore, so that info is out there in the VA files. You are also asked to provide SS# for your kids to go to school. BTW you don't have to provide them to the school. These are just a few ways that SS# are out there to be stolen or used.

Yes, I have first hand experience of that. My mom told my sister, and me (I?) that our biological mother was dead. That was what she had been told.
