  1. I had lunch with a co-worker who is a big supporter of Obama and he supports the minimum wage increase because he thinks it will help the middle class. I asked him, "What happens to many retail prices when minimum wage increases?" He admitted they go up. I then asked him, "When prices increase because the minimum wage goes up to $9/hr, will that benefit or hurt those who had already been making $9/hr or more?" He admitted the retail price increases would hurt those I mentioned. I then asked him, "If the resulting price increases will hurt those who were already earning $9/hr or more; will
  2. I have to disagree; it's government spending and over-regulating that is choking us into bankruptcy. The current administration as well as the DNC want us dependent upon foreign oil to force alternative fuel sources that don't yet exist or are not readily available down our throats. What alternative sources are available much too expensive for the majority of us to purchase.
  3. You said you are a nurse making $13/hr. Are you an RN with a ASN or BSN?
  4. Wages in most jobs are paying a lot lower now because we have a high unemployment rate (supply of available labor much higher than the demand for labor). When unemployment rates are between 4 to 5%, the scales tip the other way (demand for labor high while the supply of available labor is low) and wages increase. Think back to when the economy was really booming and unemployment rates were low. Many jobs that normally paid minimum wage were paying higher wages. One poster brought up a very interesting point about how illegal immigrants are taking jobs away from citizens. We do need tou
  5. I spent a little time searching the internet for post graduate degrees offering concentrations in "Constitutional Thought." I found nothing.
  6. It only makes sense to me that people your mother's age should vote with an absentee ballot because like your mother, they may find themselves in the hospital or some other unexpected predicament that prevents them from getting to the polls on election day. That is the self-responsibility everyone is referring to. It's also common sense.
  7. That 32% the tax payers would be responsible for would be $320M.
  8. I would require that as well as the Falcons signing a contract to be in Atlanta playing in the new stadium for the amount of years it would take to pay the stadium off. In all reality, there's no way the Falcons would sign such a contract, therefor there would be no new stadium.
  9. My parents are elderly and they always vote absentee ballot. They do so to ensure they are able to vote for such unforeseen reasons that may be caused because of their health.
  10. The Georgia Dome is only 20 years old. Why in the heck do the Falcons think they should have a new stadium at tax payer's expense? It's stupid for any municipality to buy a stadium or arena for any sports team. The teams should pay for these themselves.
  11. Every unit overseas has an election NCOIC. This is the person responsible to remind military members in their unit of the election, how to apply for an absentee ballot where they are registered to vote and the timeframe the ballot must be mailed back so it gets there on time to be counted. If they didn't receive an absentee ballot, there are federal absentee ballots they can complete and mail back to where they are registered. The federal absentee ballot has the names of the presidential candidates printed on it, but no other races. It does have spaces for you to write in any Congressional
  12. The real war on women committed in this campaign has been by the Democrats. They must really think women are stupid. As GD has pointed out several times, no president can overturn a Supreme Court decision, nor does a president have anything to do with passing a Constitutional amendment. He's also pointed out the fact it is highly unlikely a Supreme Court will overturn a decision by a SCOTUS for multiple reasons. The Democrats know this as well, but yet they continue to say if Romney is elected, he will overturn Roe v. Wade. Are women really that stupid to believe that? The Dems must thi
  13. It's always tragic when someone loses their life regardless of the circumstances. What's also tragic is how so many have posted the police officers involved are guilty of wrongdoing when all the facts have not been released. This sad incident is still under investigation. Someone asked how does one place their hand in a threatening manner? When you're instructed to put your hands up in the air and instead you point your hand out in front of you as if you were aiming something; that's a threatening manner. Though it was dark in the hallway, does not mean it was so dark one could not se
  14. You really don't pay attention to anything Romney says do you? Instead you listen to what the Democrats want you to hear. If you had paid attention to the debate earlier this week, you would have heard Romney explain why the automakers and Americans would have been better off if Chrysler and GM had filed bankruptcy to reorganize rather than receive bailout money. GM is now facing some serious financial problems. Should the federal government bail them out again or should they handle things on their own this time?
  15. You hit the nail on the head; it's supply and demand. At this moment with the unemployment rate as high as it is, there is a surplus of labor for unskilled jobs as the demand for them is low. Naturally, those jobs are going to pay less right now because there are so many people willing to take them. Demand < Supply = Lower Wages There skilled worker jobs available right now that are paying quite well because the available supply of qualified labor is low. Some of those jobs are pipe fitters, tool and die makers, welders, electricians, information technology, and engineers. N
  16. Look at the current unemployment rate. Now look at what the article said about the level of training needed or given for home health aides. You don't even need a high school diploma to do that job. It's a low skill job and the unemployment rate is high. If the unemployment rate in this country was 4%, the wages for those positions would increase because you would have where the demand for labor was greater than the available supply. I don't think so feelip. It just looks more expensive.
  17. You are absolutely correct. There is no need for the government to intervene. If anything, the government needs to stop over-regulating business and stop threatening to increase taxes. Income is down in this country because the available supply of labor is much greater than the demand. Once the demand for labor exceeds the supply of labor, wages will naturally increase.
  18. I know quite a few parents who send their children to private school; my daughter and SIL are two of them. I know my grandchildren are doing quite well at theirs. They don't have the problems a lot of public schools have that come with a lack of discipline. The curriculum is a lot better than what is used in their local public schools and they are testing much higher than those in public school. My daughter and her husband are very involved in their children's education and that's one of the many reasons they pay to send them there. BTW, they are also very conservative. I'm not o
  19. Actually it's enforcing the law that was created in 1951. The state is losing millions in tax revenue when Georgia residents purchase items online to businesses not located within the state. I can fully understand the necessity to enforce the existing law for many reasons. What I find hypocritical are those on the left who thinks it's quite right to cheat the state out of paying sales tax while accusing the rich of not paying their "fair share." Notice how quick TP was to condemn the Republicans and accuse them of raising taxes when in reality the law was created by the Democrats in
  20. When you work for an employer, the employer expects you to actually be working for him during the hours you are there. Whether you're an hourly employee or salaried employee has no bearing whatsoever. It's a real shame that you believe you should be able to cheat an employer by taking care of personal business on his time, but you in turn would not tolerate someone cheating you on your time.
  21. It's not an issue of raising taxes; it's an issue of collecting taxes that are supposed to be paid. Those purchases made online that Georgia residents are not paying sales taxes on have far reaching ramifications other than less revenue collected by the state. Sales taxes not being paid are a large concern to retailers across the state. A lot of retailers are experiencing less sales because of online purchases. They are also experiencing consumers checking items out in their store and then leaving to purchase those items online for much less. One factor that makes the online purchase le
  22. This sounds like you expect employees of a company should have the right to take of their personal business that has nothing to do with work while they are on the clock at work. An employer pays an employee to work. Let's put this into perspective a little. You hire a plumber to come to your house to fix a water leak. He charges you $50 an hour for the labor he's providing plus parts. Now let's say he's been at your house now for 2 hours and the only thing he has done is found the leak, but for the past hour and a half he's been on the phone talking to his wife. He then hangs up and a
  23. Several states have requirements to pay sales tax for online purchases.
  24. I liked the Partridge Family better than the Brady Bunch (a very corny program). I liked the Munsters more than the Addams Family. I liked Bewitch and I Dream of Jeannie about the same. There were a lot of great programs on TV back then. I actually think television programming was much better then than it is today. I think today's programming has done a lot to deteriorate the morality of our nation.
  25. I've bee using the CPAP for two years as well. Six hours of sleep while wearing it is much better than 12 hours without it. Like you, I didn't dream for years. My sleep study showed I stopped breath 72 times an hour. A friend of mine with sleep apnea tried the device brought in the OP. It didn't work for him. He then had surgery and that didn't work for him either. The CPAP does work well for him.
