    Sirens?

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the state had a statewide tornado drill at 9AM today. It is done every year. http://kf4lmt.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/georgia-statewide-tornado-drill/
  2. Or maybe postal regulations simply do not permit carriers to deliver mail on a federal holiday? Workers' comp and that type of thing?
  3. True, but San Francisco is an extremely expensive place to live, much like New York--not normally a place to which one retires. The temperatures are indeed moderate, but one must also love fog and rain, because that is what one gets most of the year.
  4. The state will likely waive at least some of the days, as they did last year with the flood. It is too early to tell, so I am surprised that that Cherokee announced this. After I looked at it again, I wondered if it is an attempt to force the state's hand, i.e., an early announcement, rather than a later one. The superintendent there comes from a district in Florida where such a move is possible. However, I had mentioned in another thread earlier in the week that the writing test would likely be postponed. These types of decisions come more quickly now than they used to.
  5. True, but it is not just one class. Think what this would cost. I would agree that it is not worth it for a part-time-I-will-never-use-this-in-a-longterm-career situation. OTOH, if there is even a chance that she will work in child care or preschool situations in the future, then I would recommend that she do it. 6. Cute. Inaccurate and misleading, but cute.
  7. UPS stores are open; that might be closer to you.
  8. However, the CDA is actually only required for lead teachers in a child care facility. Teacher assistants require state-mandated training, but not a full CDA. In many facilities, especially smaller ones, staff members are moved around as needed, and thus the facilities require all staff members to obtain the CDA credential to ensure flexibility in assignments, especially in beginning- or end-of-day situations, where a CDA must be present.
  9. Georgia certainly qualifies as a place that does not get too cold. This is unusual weather; just ask any Yankee if this is considered a "cold" place.
  10. Let's go back to the beginning of the Perdue era, which began in 2003, and see when Paulding schools were dismissed early and/or missed school. A minimum of three hours is needed to be considered as a school day, so that make up is not necessary. Feb. 2004: Missed 1 day due to snow. Teacher workday added to end of year Sept. 2004: Early release 1 day and missed following day, due to Tropical Storm Ivan. Teacher workday added to end of year. Sept. 2005: Missed 2 days due to fuel crisis, as per Gov. Perdue's request that schools close to conserve a stockpile of fuel. No days were added; P
  11. The reality is that we can speculate all we want, but ultimately the board will have to comply with whatever the state directs. School districts were told by the state, at the beginning of the year, that up to 16 furlough days might be needed; ten were being scheduled up front in Paulding. Other districts handled things differently with a greater or lesser number of furlough days, depending on the length of their school days, available resources and other considerations. For a while it was hoped that there might be no more furlough days, but the new governor has reviewed the budget and in
  12. Given the fact that this winter storm (unlike last year's floods) impacted most of the state, I would predict that the writing test will be pushed back by a few days, possibly to the following week.
  13. Nope. This is NPHS' fourth year and all of its student body started at NPHS when it opened with only 9th grade. That was the plan, so that there would not have to be any switching, except for a few unusual situations.
  14. Not true. Cobb County government offices are indeeed closed tomorrow. http://www.cobbcounty.org/
  15. The state of emergency was called late this afternoon, before it started to snow.
  16. Paulding Schools website has it listed as closed, and WSB TV has it on the bottom of screen.
  17. Many of them, including several on WSB, are actually meteorolgists by background and credential, so concerning them I would differ with you.
  18. I watched the same newscast, and he said the same thing both at the start of the news and later in the weather segment. I think you misunderstood the first.
  19. Yes, but alas, the wires that deliver power to your neighborhood are very much above ground.
  20. The lazy bus driver lady strikes again. NO such decision has been made. There are several different scenarios possible, considering one day has already been missed, and with a new governor and budget woes coming in, anything can happen. However, no school is "reporting" a decision that involves both state and local folks, and is still a little ways off.
  21. So much for one person's accuracy. The recorded call did NOT state that. It said to make plans for any one of three contigencies over the next several days: A. Three-hour delay in start time B. Schools closed completely C. Schools dismissing three hours early (should conditions worsen after arrival) I certainly would think that for Monday, B would be the most likely, but the recording was speaking of "early next week," so clearly Tuesday was being considered, as well.
  22. If indeed they are closing this store, I would surmise that it is far too late to effect a change; the wheels are already in motion.
  23. In addition to being a wonderful comedy actor, best known for his role as Ed Norton on The Honeymooners, Carney also won an Academy award for his dramatic role in Harry and Tonto (1975).
