  1. I've never, ever been into history from a book. Even in college I took those classes during the summer so that I didn't have to suffer. I saved the good stuff, like trig and calc, for the longer semesters. We all have our thing.
  2. I have multiple advanced degrees and I can't even do that...oh, and I also briefly served in the military, so no patriotism issues.... I can, however, name most of the elements on the periodic table. I easily spend half of my day in various teachers' classrooms and I wholeheartedly disagree with this. Who needs the public belittling great teachers when we're so busy degrading each other?
  3. A textbook and a nonfiction book read for pleasure are no where near the same.
  4. OR we can teach children to be those "thinkers" everyone keeps asking about and let them be resourceful. I absolutely do not go to a textbook when I need info, I use other resources. Let's use this opportunity to teach about reliable sources and biases. I can find the Gettysburg Address a thousand places, why do I need a book that has it all? I believe that PARENTS are the only ones that care about the book issue. And kid who cares is repeating what they were told at home. If we teach kids the way we were taught, then we're doing it wrong. Perspective.
  5. We recently moved. I am 1000x happier with my child's education in a local Tilte I school than I was at a local "top" school.
  6. My dad worked for the CDC 15 years ago and said they trained for Ebola in the US as a "worst case senerio." Until those survival rates increase, I'm 100% pro-isolation. And anyone who has been exposed and doesn't report it should be treated as a criminal.
  7. AND any mother who, uses child support as ransom should be kicked in the balls. And Dads need to start filing contempt charges for violating court orders. Get a judge annoyed enough, something could happen. Now, with that said, if mom can prove safety reasons or another legit reason for refusing visitation, that needs to be addressed as well.
  8. I would tell my daughter's father to shove it straight up his a-hole if he asked for accountability. I, and many others like me, pay for everything off of my income. "His" money is treated as a reimbursement. My logic is that he can quit paying at any time (he won't, but still...) and I need to be able to support me and mine. I make more money than he does, so the support is tilted in his favor. I think the OP and others in this thread are commenting bias and extreme situations. For every woe-is-me story, there are a thousand people out there doing what's right.
  9. I have a spare bedroom for anyone whose dreams have to reboot. I always have a spare bedroom.
  10. I'm calling tomorrow to make another appt. I went the very next day when I was starting to feel uncomfortable...so that may make a difference. You definitely won't want to wait too long. I talked to the insurance company a little while ago and we discussed putting $$ aside as a part of the "settlement" for medical costs that may come up in the next 90 days or so.... And she offered $1000 pain/suffering, I'm going to see what the doc says before I start talking "settlement." And I've been without my car for two weeks now (not that I mind the newer, sportier rental...but still)... Like you,
  11. Im in the midst of this now. My back pain got gradually worse over the 3 weeks since I was rear ended. So far so good with insurance companies. I was told that I have to use the medical coverage under MY policy before I use my medical insurance....and then the at fault insurance company pays it all off in the end. Idk. As long as everything gets settled in the end and I get paid back my out of pocket and lost wages, I'm good.
  12. Mostly false. Snopes can't account for the planes either. If it were absolutely false, someone would have accounted for the planes. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/missingplanes.asp I wasn't a "conspiracy theorists" prior to this administration.
  13. Some local thrift shops operate on a voucher system, even though they have a physical store too. Bird something?
  14. This is serious stuff. I've read about it online but have yet to see it reported more mass media. Obama, and The Postman, are trucking idiots for downplaying or ignoring this.
  15. This reads like someone got a piece of a story or incident and filled in the holes by making assumptions about how things were handled. I've never know a school, or district, to release discipline info about other students to third parties....let alone confirm "victim" status.
  16. This topic is tragic. This thread? Disgusting.
  17. I have traveled all over the place and I always make it a point to eat at McD''s. It's nothing like the trash we get in the US.
  18. They got more of your money than they got of mine. Walked in with $50 to spend and spent none of it....and Lord knows I tried. I'm not buying all of the excuses. I've just moved to Dallas and this was my first event. *I* was able to anticipate the crowds and plan accordingly, I don't understand why event planners couldn't have. The second one is during September break, which may or may not influence the crowds. We'll see.
  19. There were hundreds of people.....and no where near enough food for a food based event. We ended up eating elsewhere.
  20. Brackets and braces have always existed......stacking ( ) is annoying and lazy. Go tell your 5th grade teacher I said so.
  21. I liked it....but I'm way into intellectual movies. I'm nerdy like that.
