1. At 1000am they called the day at noon/one.What a difference those few hours would have made.
2. After all the trouble to get school dismissed, getting my own kid, and trying to get someplace warm and safe, my guts hurt. Not being able to get to my kid was a bit more than I could handle. I can't even imagine what these parents/drivers are going through. If one kid gets hurt because of this weather......
3. I took tomorrow off.....so I really don't care.
4.

thanks! I'm committed to getting it done before spring gets swinging!
5.

It's going to be a looooong election year for you if that's all it took to run you off. The only way I would vote for Deal is if Obama were running against him.
6. Teacher pay raises is at the bottom of the list of things that need to be done with the money. Lower ing the class sizes (by hiring more teacher), providing adequate resources (technology, etc), and initiatives for targeting struggling students (particularly middle school) should be at the top of the list.Like Nick said, the devil is in the details. Free money is never free.
7. I've considered this, but my premiums are comparable to what I previously had with an HMO. (At least for me). IF the savings were a little more on either end, there would be less outcry. It's ALL state employees. That's a whole lot of pissed off voters. Perhaps Deal should talk to Barnes about what happens when you piss off the teachers! At least Barnes was smart enough to do any sometime other than an election year! At the end of the day, I'm not leaving education over money. For the most part, I live way within my means, have a comfortable savings account, and excellent c
8. This whole "real world" thing pisses me off. It suggests that we haven't dealt with the repercussions of the economy....and I assure you and everyone else in this thread that furloughs and the health care are just the areas that the majority of you KNOW about. I manage a portion of a school budget. It's scary how much we do with the little we get. Just do me a favor and don't send your kid to school with the flu, or a stomache virus, or a cold, or anything else me or my child may catch. And encourage your friends to keep their kids at home too.
9. Check out the universities as well. I don't know about the ones around here, but one on the other side of ATL offers a degree in ASL. I took an intro class through parks and rec years ago. Learn the alphabet first. I could finger spell with someone if needed, but not engage in a full convo. Many people are like that.
10. It's different than what we are used to and there is allegedly evidence of unethical bidding floating around (I won't post specifics because I can't verify any of it)....and you can't call anyone who has the answers. Sticker shock is setting in. Pay the same, then pay more. ...but no one knows how much more. This is the first time I've ever experienced this uncertainty.
11. I joined the Facebook page a few days ago, but for the tips/tricks to stretch my money and not for the political components. I will not be signing the petition, but I have drafted a letter to.my representative regarding the negative impacts this (and so many other things) have had in the schools. I don't think that this needs to turn into a nasty thread. We (state employees) understand that others have dealt with this for years. When there is a change that impacts so many working citizens of the state (650,000+famlilies?) everyone needs to know about it. The most difficult pa
12. I woud have liked to have OPTIONS. I, and many others, would have paid higher premiums to have the plan we previously had. I pay very similar premiums for the BCBS "coverage" as I had for my UHC HMO. I think the bigger beef the state employees have is that we went from having CHOICES to being forced into one plan.
13. Apparently the fire alarm went off at an elem school today. My 6 year old was at lunch, coat less. She said she was "freezing to death" outside. Too bad the teacher didn't grab the kids coats off the hook when she grabbed hers as she went to meet her class.
14. The buildings aren't warm. I thought we covered that as a reason.
15. If the kids had school today this thread would bea totally different bitchfest. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
16. I was in those school buildings on Friday.....every one I was in was freezing. The heaters were running. Friday was a heat wave compared to today and tomorrow. I was already prepared to layer up the girl should we have had school. Sometimes, the issue isnt as simple as it may appear.
17. Be safety. Do you need to borrow my helmet?
18. I support your theory. It is cold up high in the clouds. The sleet melts when it gets to warmer air down low.
19. Yup. Just got a text from supervisor at central.
20. First, let me just say that I'm glad you're back on PCom. :hugs: Now let me say that if I see a kid walking to school tomorrow, I'm flashing my badge and putting them in my car....and then calling the sheriffs office....and DFACS.
21. I know what someone is getting for their birthday this year....
22. Shut.the.front.door. I remember that call!! And I've been watching the weather forecasting this.....for days and days. Dammit if I didn't make a plan......just in case
