For Goodness sakes. If they are getting tax money to buy things with, the taxpayer should have the right to put some strings on that money. Drugs are illegal, so if they are doing illegal things, they shouldn't be getting taxpayer money. How hard is that? This is the same principle as I argued in the other thread about cancer treatments and cost. If someone is getting taxpayer money to subsidize their healthcare, then we should be able to put strings on that too. We should be able to demand they no longer use tobacco, exercise and do other things. This is about personal responsibility. If

Better Cancer Treatments Mean Higher Costs

You liberals. Hmph. I don't want my tax money going to drug addicts. They do drugs; they don't get welfare. Same with tax payer funded health care; they want the tax money to pay for medical care, then I want some proof they are doing things to take better care of themselves. When did you liberals stop believing in personal responsibility? -
Better Cancer Treatments Mean Higher Costs

I'm not saying those things will guarantee there will be no cancer or disease but that the odds are less if one does take care of himself. If a person cannot afford the insurance, why on earth wouldn't that person be extra careful about not doing the things that lead to sickness? It would be like me owning a business and the business is not doing well. If that is the case, I would be a complete fool to not work out every day to relieve stress and keep the body in the best possible shape so I wouldn't get sick. Sickness and a bad business at the same time is recipe for disaster. The same wo -
Better Cancer Treatments Mean Higher Costs

I understand that cost may be prohibitive to some, but then we come back to personal responsibility, don't we? If someone can't afford to get sick, why are they smoking and increase their risk of disease astronomically? Why do they not exercise? Why don't they get more preventative care if they can't afford the expense of real problem? This is about responsibility. Costs are going up so the responsible thing to do is make sure those costs are minimized. No smoking. Keep the weight under control. Get regular check ups. Go to the dentist. All that keeps the medical costs down by catching tho -
Better Cancer Treatments Mean Higher Costs

Even with so-so insurance from an employer, one can get a supplemental policy for health insurance or a cancer policy. Getting sick doesn't have to mean bankruptcy if a person plans ahead and takes responsibility for that planning. -

That's interesting. Goldman Sachs was the ones back in January predicting gas would reach $4 a gallon and then fall my Memorial Day. This could be big. -
This is not a good situation. Hope it gets worked out.

Now Employees Don't Have to Wear Santa Hats
stercus tauri replied to zoocrew's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I think that really is the point. There are tons of people looking for that job right now. The civil rights stuff was put in place to protect employees so the employer couldn't force someone to do something against their religion just to have a job. I think that is very fair to all concerned. It's the way I want to be treated by my employer. -

The thing is that employers cannot discriminate based on religion and has to treat all employees the same. Also, the employer cannot force his religion on the employees. -
Now Employees Don't Have to Wear Santa Hats
stercus tauri replied to zoocrew's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The employer can't force a person to do something against their religion because that is discrimination. When my father moved here from California, he was met with all kinds of hostility because he was Catholic. When he married my mom who was Methodist, they both caught all kinds of grief because she was marrying an "un-saved Catholic" and he was marrying "outside the church." My father was cursed at, beaten up, had his tires slashed, had notes left in his locker telling him to quit the company he worked at so a "Christian" could work in the "Christian" business and he could go back to "un -
Now Employees Don't Have to Wear Santa Hats
stercus tauri replied to zoocrew's topic in RECENT TOPICS
It doesn't. Santa is not the point. The point is that the employer was telling an employee that there had to be participation in a holiday. The holiday is the point. The hat is part of the holiday celebration. Jehovah's Witnesses do not observe any holiday because that is against their religion. So wearing the hat would be like telling me I cannot go to Mass or must commit a mortal sin in order to have a job. That is what the law says cannot be done. This is not about a hat but about the holiday the hat represents. -

Now Employees Don't Have to Wear Santa Hats

I don't know how all this works and I'm only going by what the link said and based on my limited understanding and experience in the corporate world. As I understand it, a business cannot force someone to do something they normally wouldn't do outside of work because of their religion. The caveat to that is that it has to be reasonable, at least that is what the training we always went through say. Applied to this situation, if the person wouldn't wear the hat for religious reasons outside the job, they can't be forced to wear it on the job. That's just what I've been told and I think it is fa -
Now Employees Don't Have to Wear Santa Hats
stercus tauri replied to zoocrew's topic in RECENT TOPICS
A Santa hat may or may not be religious but for a person to believe the whole season may be religious based, and believe it is against their religion to participate, then they can't be forced to wear the hat. I think that is the way the law works. It is more what the person believes than the reality. -
Isn't he saying we should just enforce the laws we already have instead of new laws?

Something as American as hamburgers and no one agrees on the details. Imagine how our teachers feel when trying to teach 38 kids in a classroom and that means at least 50 sets of parents or grandparents or step parents who disagree on how to teach those Precious Little Darlings. I don't even want to think about our politicians and how they feel. Beef. The best burgers have the best beef. Everything else is fluff.

I think we may have acted too quickly with this. Congress did this before the military gave us a plan? What is it going to do with spousal benefits for military members in those states were gays can marry? What about visitation rights? Will JAG help abused partners and spouses too? I just don't know how this is going to work and would like to have seen a plan first.

We're back! Had a great trip to St Louis, saw the family and can honestly report the trip thru security was not all that bad. Now Jason has to go back to work and I get to decorate tomorrow. Anyone want to have lunch? Lady Raider? Dreamgirl? LPPT? Any body? St Louis breweries are fun to tour. No free samples tho. We did all that at the Trainwreck.

Happy Thanksgiving Spend Time with Family and Friends

People still go to the malls? ROFL! On line shopping with delivery works really well. If I can't find it locally, I order it. When we get back to Dallas on Sunday, I guess I will have to stop at Walgreens and finish all the shopping that I can't get sent via UPS. -
Tomorrow we're touring a few Breweries and then the adults are leaving the kids with the grands and me, my hubby, his sister and her boyfriend are going to sample the brews at The Trainwreck. St Louis is such a neat town but it is a lot colder than when we left Dallas. Hope everybody had a great T-Day!
