I am dividing receipts for taxes into Improvements and Repairs/Maintenance. I have questions on 3 receipts: New furnance when old furnace was not working at all New carpet and refinishing hardwood floors Removing trees and grinding stumps--some were causing damage to roof One website (either IRS or TurboTax) said a new furnace is an improvement--but is that still the case if old one doesn't work at all? It also says it's an improvement if it increases value of home. It gives some examples--but not these specifically. Thanks!

That what it sounded like she was saying--maybe I misunderstood. I think she said they lock them at night but not when they are in and out during the day.

If you don't think they can get in with the dead bolts on--I would lock them while I was gone. If you think it's too much trouble to lock and unlock 2 locks while you're coming in and out just lock the dead bolts. That sounds like an easy solution.

I had an increase--my policy just renewed this month at the 6 rating. I was hoping it would be adjusted and I'd get a little refund. A check in the mail is always nice--no matter how small.

That makes perfect sense and answers the OP's question. I did sound weird at first.

My insurance company sent an email yesterday. We have changed from 6 to 5 and they will send out a new policy. BUT no change in premium--I was looking forward to some kind of refund. Maybe it will help on next year's increase. Thanks again FreeBird.

I guess I will contact them again. It renewed this month and I don't really trust them to be honest. Last year they raised it because of the ISO--saying it was higher--house and fire department were in the same place. The bill was paid by mortgage company and I had to wait for a refund. Thanks again.

After reading this I sent an email to Liberty Mutual. My rating is a 6 and I was 5.6 miles from a fire station. I'm 4.7 miles from the new one. Freebird is there a website to check what my rating should be? I've looked at a few sites this morning but can't find a chart. Thank you for posting this info.

That is so nice of you! I thought about you yesterday. I didn't see this the first week--but the NFL proceeds on "pink items" will be given to The American Cancer Society. So I guess the pink color is getting the attention--but the money will be shared.
