  1. I could afford to run. I would run on donations and popular support. I would not personally finance debt in order to run for office. So for me, running isn't the problem. WINNING is the problem. You are now ready to serve, but if you are running your own business and you are the product... your family is going to be pretty hungry while you're down at the Capitol voting. Sigh.
  2. When I was coming home from an event in Dunwoody last night, I wondered what the closure at Whitlock was all about. Glad to have that mystery solved! Hopefully we'll hear from MCMM soon...
  3. That burns me up. I pay $6 on the days when my kid needs to stay there. What is with people that just don't pay at all? Why aren't they forced to pay?
  4. Just a reminder that there are people immensely interested in serving, but who simply cannot afford to do so.
  5. Thank you for getting to the heart of this issue. We can argue all day about the nice, honorable, valuable things that a dollar can be used to do... but it can't do all of them simultaneously. We are at the point where some wonderful, excellent things are going to have to be cut because we can't afford to do every good thing. It will create pain and hardship and hard feelings. But being nice and openminded and agreeing with everyone about the value of everything doesn't change the number of dollars left to work with.
  6. I'm not sure what you're asking. Let's talk Friday morning... or I can stop by the restaurant to discuss.
  7. I may need her - don't know just yet. Thanks for letting me know though!
  8. I like Fox News, don't see any reason to snark like some, but I don't buy this story (which came from The Sun, fwiw). It does seem like a unique archaeological find, but the actual Ark? I just think the odds are against it.
  9. Will do. Been traveling -- back in town and trying to catch up!
  10. Always gonna be Mama and Daddy. Those are their names and they're stuck with 'em. I still miss Mammaw, too. That said, when discussing my parents in general conversation with others outside the family or circle of close friends, I will say "my parents" or "my folks" or "my mom and dad."
  11. LPPT makes some good observations. Like I said before - I'm inclined toward SPLOST more than other types of taxes, but I think the additional option of spending cuts is not getting enough consideration.
  12. Pat: Yes, I understand the concept of a sales tax being more "optional." And no, I'm not disregarding quality of life issues. I think a good argument can be made, though, that everyone's quality of life is more directly improved by having more of their own earnings in their pockets to spend, save, or give to charity themselves than by a feeling that they've contributed to a trail improvement by coercion... especially under the current economy. While I do instinctively prefer a sales tax to a property tax, I'm clearly not alone in being perturbed by the ultimatum and false dichotomy b
  13. Generally speaking, I prefer the concept of sales taxes to other kinds of taxes - income, property, etc. I didn't live here when this came up last time, but in a different economic environment, I can see where SPLOSTs might be a good answer for certain specific projects. Given the proposed projects and the current economics, I can't imagine why anyone would think it's a good idea to continue this tax. I am not shutting the door on the conversation if someone is ready to convince me why this should be supported... but I just don't see it as a legitimate burden under the current circumstan
  14. I use it, but definitely not for everyone I care to converse with. When traveling, it is nice to use to keep in touch. We skype our folks and even my Mammaw until she died. I skyped home this weekend to see my daughter's new braces. Love it... but I don't use it all the time.
  15. I am not saying it "bothers" me -- it was a mild gripe, not a big gasp horror of horrors. I wasn't talking about the pet contest or directing it at any one individual. Sorry I mentioned it.
  16. Let me be clear... I'm not limiting this to any one person or company. It's not a "complaint" in that I don't want anyone fined or punished or removed or chastised, etc. It's just my observation that if 3-6 posts from the same company come up day after day after day, it's going to spoil or at least dampen the environment for others to market their own products and services... not the "same product" only, but everybody. It's just a gripe, not a major federal case or anything. Just something that is giving me some concern as a member of the pcom business community who wants this to
  17. Bizness - it was not you I was thinking of at all!
  18. <gripe> It's one thing to come on and see businesses promote themselves - maybe a couple of times a week, etc. I love that I can come on and share what's going on in my business and don't begrudge anyone else that opportunity. This is a great audience... but they are also an audience of savvy consumers who can see through spin and blitz. Multiple new threads from the same person/product every day gets real old, real quick. That's a good way to spoil the use of pcom as a viable marketing opportunity not only for yourself, but for everybody else. </gripe>
  19. Cake Lady - Who is your son? Kriana - If this lady's son can't help you, give me a call. I do a lot of fundraising for charities. Thanks! http://www.turnermagic.com 404.644.6791
  20. My poor wife thanks you for making it even more difficult to live in a house with me, 2 kids, 2 cats, and my ego.
  21. FYI - You can get 15gb of free online storage from 4shared.com. You're welcome.
  22. Just wanted to say thanks to MCMM for the pat on the back.
  23. My random thoughts on this from FB yesterday: : I can definitely sympathize with my friends who oppose the Georgia budget cut that eliminated the arts council. But I heard one awful speaker on the radio today who brought shame to those wanting to save the GAC. ------------------------ : I have to take issue with that speaker (identity unknown, but audio was on WSB) who said that without the GAC we would be "without arts" in Georgia. That is ridiculous -- we do not need the government council in order to "keep arts in Georgia." We need artists, not legislators. The fact that I don't
  24. I don't know. Call me agnostic on that question.
