I'm chatting on Facebook with his sister and as expected, mom is a mess. With my wife in the hospital, I can't make the trip to NY. I'm sad I can't be there.

Today, I found out a friend I've known for over 40 years passed away. Growing up an only child, he was like the brother I didn't have but 45 years old is too damn young to die. Very sad day for me.

I know what you mean as well. A woman who was my then fiance's boss and was invited to our wedding was killed by her boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself. They left behind a small child who would be raised by her grandparents. I'm sure he was in pain over the end of their relationship, but if he truly loved her, he would have let her move on and maybe he could of as well. Although blunt, you were righjt on the money.

Is is possible to refrain from snarkiness for a brief moment. Clearly, this kid had issues that didn't happen overnight and probably didn't belong in public school. The students behind the recent school attacks all had mental health issues.and a bunch of armed and poorly trained people may have made the situation worse. It's one thing thing to fire a gun at a range but it's an entirely different thing to have to use a weapon in a high stress/dangerous situation with a large number of people.

It's sad he was punished for doing the right thing but I could imagine the bully's parents complaining. As a teacher, I wish your son had kicked the bully's ass. I remember getting into fights with kids at school and being friends a week later. Things have certainly changed.
