I don't think people need to be bright to have empathy. People who are that lacking in empathy are sociopaths. This may make people feel better. http://www.people.com/article/kfc-pays-medical-bills-girl-pitbull-attack-mississippi

The complete lack of empathy is disturbing.

Peter Greene: A Catalogue of Anti-Teacher Trolls on the Internet
TJB replied to TJB's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I'm not sure you would ever be able to truly quantify effectiveness or dedication. A few years ago, I taught 6,7, and 8th grade social studies along with Economics and World History. Each class was almost an hour long; when I attended graduate school, a professor who was a working high-school teacher said preparation for the daily lesson should last roughly as long as the period lasts. With 5 preps each day, that would mean approximately 5 hours of prep time daily. Figure in an 8 hour workday with only 1 hour of planning built into the day, an hour drive each day and still having to cook, do l -
Peter Greene: A Catalogue of Anti-Teacher Trolls on the Internet
TJB posted a topic in RECENT TOPICS
People had varied opinions on the topic of teacher tenure as it is related to the recent Vergara decision. I saw this article and believe it sheds light on the anti-teacher that is so prevalent. http://dianeravitch.net/2014/06/15/peter-greene-a-catologue-of-anti-teacher-trolls-on-the-internet/ -
I care about students, but there are many variables a teacher has no control over such as; poorly behaved kids due to lack of parenting or crazy helicopter parents who think little Johnny or Suzy do no wrong. How about a kid who is plain lazy and apathetic and whines to mommy and daddy every time they get in trouble and sh*t all over teachers because the attitude is reinforced at home. I forgot administrators who harass effective older teachers because they are finally making decent money or because they want a younger teacher. Tenure offers some protection for teachers from these situations,

Sorry, I had a brain fart. You are correct. However, I could see major abuses happening with "at will" employment in education. Even with tenure, a school system can find ways to get rid of teachers; both good and bad. I've seen the abuse of teachers, mostly older ones, and it runs rampant. However, a non-tenured teacher is employed basically at-will and yet they could lose their certificate if they break a contract.

You are wrong about a teacher leaving in the middle of the year. A teacher leaving a teaching job to go to another teaching job would be breaking their contract, which could lead to revocation of their teaching certificate. Teachers legally cannot break a contract, yet they can be fired at will. So, the powers that be want to screw teachers both ways.

This was posted by a facebook friend of mine; making the argument for the necessity of tenure. Why Teachers Need Tenure and Due Process: Teaching is an incredibly "political" profession. The content of curriculum, as well as school budgets and hiring policies are the subject of intense debate from local school districts through legislators. Public officials, given a chance, will use schools as centers of patronage or places where they build political machines, and they will attempt to make teachers serve those ends if teachers do not have basic job protections. Then there are the parents

I've been observed under both scenarios. The principal is supposed to be the instructional leader who has extensive knowledge of curriculum and teaching methodology. If a school is busy, it is rare to see the principal more than once a day, unless there is a specific reason. A principal can lie on an observation to protect a teacher they like or lie on one to get rid of a teacher they dislike. In order for an observation to be a good one, the principal tries to stay as unnoticed as possible, but students and teachers can still tell when they are being observed. There is no ideal system of obse

The principal and assistant principals.

Do people realize that tenure doesn't stop schools from firing bad teachers? In order to obtain "tenure", teachers are observed for 3-4 times a year for 3 years and must have a satisfactory rating. Before tenure is obtained, a teacher can be fired and do little about it. What tenure does is afford the teacher the right to due process and if a teacher is found incompetent or a danger to kids, they can still be terminated. Tenure prevents administration from arbitrarily firing a teacher who has committed the crime of making a decent salary after many years of service. It also prevents a princip

Prison will be a far better place for this man and he will fail to have a solid bowel movement for the rest of his miserable life. -
How about an episode where Picard wears Kirk's toupee?

I saw them with my wife about 15 years ago when they opened for Ann and Nancy Wilson. They put on a great show, better than Ann and Nancy, but Barracuda loses something without a full band and electric guitars.

My heart goes out to you. I love my animals and I can't imagine doing such a thing to someone's pet. -
Just talking or in this case, writing about it, is helpful. My wife said if I wanted to go, we would find a way but It's my next to last week of school and I'm not sure I can handle such a sad event. The last years of his life were rough; he had COPD and overcame addiction and a bitter divorce and managed to be a good father to his daughters. We both grew up with alcoholic fathers; my father got sober, his didn't and my father tried to be a father, while his didn't. Compared to my friend, my life was like Leave it to Beaver and I also learned he was a good friend to other recovering addicts. I
