I have a friend who was an Army recruiter in Minneapolis during the late 60's. Back then recruiting offices were being broken into and set afire. He said they never wore uniforms if they were stationed anywhere near a university. Instead they wore civilian navy pants, white shirt, and red blazers, and were issued .38's they carried concealed.
