Nathan Jacobs served in Company A, 40th Regiment Infantry (formed in North Paulding and South Bartow Counties) from February 1861 till his death January 30, 1863 at Fairground Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. By volunteering, Nathan recieved $25.00. This unit was part of the force sent to capture Kentucky for the Confederacy. The men ran out of food, clothes, shoes and ammunition. Nathan was wounded in Kentucky, put on a train in Chattanooga and sent to Atlanta. Nathan had $0.25 in his pocket when he died. He was buried at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga.
