  1. I totally agree with you, lobbyists should not be allowed. I think they are terrible! Congress will NEVER outlaw them because it's too good a deal for THEM to have lobbyists. That said, do you think the child tax credit would be in existence had it not been for a special lobby? Or the first time homebuyer credit? Let's not forget AARP and their lobby. I would imagine that those companies looking to relocate to a specific area wouldn't even know about some of those areas where it not for a "lobby" of some sort. Obamacare would not be in existence if it weren't for a strong lobby, prima
  2. But Laurie, the standard deduction is a "tax break". So is the child tax credit, the home energy credit, the first time homebuyer credit, the education credit. The list goes on and on. If individuals had to pay taxes on their entire income they would have a cow! They DO get tax breaks! And let's not forget that certain types of income are excluded, like Social Security can be non-taxable and profits on the sale of your home can be non-taxable. The "average American" does not have a clue how government works, or for that matter how taxes work or what percentage of THEIR income they p
  3. Any work over 26 hours a week would disqualify her based on income at $13 an hour pay. However, she MIGHT qualify as there may factors not mentioned.
  4. Yes, it took several EMTs to pick her up off the floor AT HER INSISTENCE. They said they could it do and likely could have. EMTs are trained to pick up people safely, for them and the patient. She was afraid she would hurt them. Then again, she weighs a hell of a lot more than 200 pounds. Like I said SEVERAL TIMES, if the doctor had said there is a physician that I want to refer you to that can better treat you it would have been fine. But she said it was because her employees had too many injuries from helping overweight people! That's NOT fine. To help others was why I g
  5. You're being sarcastic but that is the truth. If you're a doctor, you have to do this because it is the truth. YOU can't put YOUR interest before that of the patient. And you're right. The patient is more important than anything else. At least it used to be back when I was in the medical field. Now it's what the insurance company says must be done, patient be damned. If they don't love helping others, they should be carpet salesmen instead of doctors.
  6. I have a friend who is morbidly obese. She fell about a year ago. Her husband called 911. The first two EMTs they sent were not half her size put together. There was no way they could get her up. They finally sent out two more EMTs and it took FOUR of them to pick her up. But guess what, it is their JOB to do that. It isn't the job of the radiation therapist job to get a person on an exam or treatment table. It's not the job of the medical assistant, the nurse or anyone else. They often do help. It's not their job, though. Their job is to administer the radiation treatment or a
  7. Many doctors will not treat their employees. Most will but it depends on the specialty. If these people had back injuries, it is doubtful that their PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN employer would be their physician. Again, had the doctor told the woman she thought she would be better served by another doctor because they specialized in her condition, it would have never gained attention. Doctors dismiss patients every day.
  8. Well, the AMA Code of Medical Ethics is what physicians who are members pledge to adhere to. If you read the "opinion" it says "place patient's welfare above their own self-interest". That means, at least to me, that YOUR bottom line does not enter into your treatment or the patient's welfare. Your insurance premiums don't take precedence over the patient's welfare. I fully believe that the reason the doctor wouldn't treat this woman was because her work comp insurance told her they would cancel her if one more employee got hurt. Of course, I am a card-carrying member of Cynics Inter
  9. In the AMA Code of Medical Ethics, Opinion 10.015--the Patient Physician Relationship it states: The relationship between patient and physician is based on trust and gives rise to physicians’ ethical obligations to place patients’ welfare above their own self-interest and above obligations to other groups, and to advocate for their patients’ welfare. Within the patient-physician relationship, a physician is ethically required to use sound medical judgment, holding the best interests of the patient as paramount. Gee, maybe I wasn't high on love after all.
  10. Every patient I have seen be dismissed by a doctor, as in "I won't treat you anymore", was dismissed because of non-compliance or lying. Maybe I was high on love or something during medical ethics class. I could have sworn we were taught to treat EVERY patient with dignity and respect regardless of their outward appearance, their physical abilities or their economic status. But then again, I went to school when medical personnel actually gave a damn about the patient.
  11. The children should be with whoever can care for them and it doesn't matter if it's the father, mother, aunt or next door neighbor's first cousin's hairdresser. Children do NOT always belong with the mom. Thank goodness there was a Cobb County judge back in 1976 who felt my stepdaughters would be better off with their dad than their mom. She was an incredible person and loved her daughters very, very much but they were so young they needed parenting, not to be the parent.
  12. XM got to where they repeated songs a lot. Some of the comedy bits on the comedy channel got to be on at the same time. We finally got to where we went "if we're near Shorter, then so-and-so is on the comedy channel right now".
  13. Maybe that explains why a friend was so happy to have found it.
  14. You might. If you're in Cobb, the answer is a resounding yes. You'd better have one if you do anything other than get a W2. You need to check with the county business license division. FYI, employees don't get 1099s. Contractors and subcontractors get 1099s. Employees get W2s. Since you would be considered self-employed, that may be what the county (or city if you're inside the city limits) would go by. PM me if you have any other questions. I work with small businesses/self employed for a living and have for almost 20 years.
  15. It's a cool looking place from the outside, too!!
  16. I try to deny services to clueless people. That should make my clients feel good.
  17. Reminds me of an episode of "Two and a Half Men" when Alan's second wife filed for divorce and he asked his first wife for the name of her lawyer because he was good. Divorce is never funny. It can, however, be the best thing you ever do.
  18. I meant to say also, that she needs to talk to her tax adviser as well as an attorney. Some divorce proceedings have tax implications. Once it's done, it's done and there is nothing she could do. Best to talk that over PRIOR to the divorce being final.
  19. Sounds like a routine onsite visit. We have them here in Cobb about every three years. We keep our gates locked so nobody can go in the backyard. Not to keep the tax man from seeing our building or sunroom, as those are quite obvious, but to keep strangers out. The last time the assessors were out at our rental house, our son in law talked with the guy for a good half hour. Our assessment was reduced $10,000!
  20. Legally, there is no reason she would be entitled to half of all assets. Georgia is not a community property state. That said, an agreement may be reached that covers her needs and then some. I highly doubt with a job paying $13 an hour she will qualify for food stamps, unless she only works 4 or 5 hours a month. The threshold is pretty low income-wise. It wouldn't hurt to apply and while she's there apply for everything that she could possibly be entitled to.
  21. Isaac only became a minimal Cat 1 hurricane less than 2 hours before landfall. The problem with Isaac has been the slow movement, which meant more rain than a fast moving storm.
  22. I was in the office for around 3 hours yesterday. On my way in, all the prices along the way were $3.79 a gallon--Kroger on Brownsville, Racetrac at Cleburne and 278, whatever that is at Poplar Springs and Macland, the Shell at Macland and 92, the BP at Macland and 120 and Citgo at Bobo and Macland. On the way home, THREE HOURS or less later, the BP had gone up to $3.94! The Kroger was the same it was earlier and it was packed. In a pouring rain. At 2:00 in the afternoon. Interestingly enough, crude prices were no higher yesterday than the day before. Also seems as though wholesa
  23. Yes, they will be. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. My brother in law went to Biloxi and Gulfport after Camille in 1969 and a friend has been to several in the past 20 years.
  24. I knew who you would recommend. Peggy only enhances what you already have--inner beauty.
