  1. I know republicans who live in section 8 housing and their grown daughter does, too. And gets foodstamps, wic, and draws disability because she has metal issues-which prevent her from getting to work on time. hahahahaha! But they are republicans!
  2. yep...just not a radical, super lefty. I am like most people, I tend to be in the common sense, central part of the range. But, IMHO, the country prospers more and is in better shape when a dem is in the White House. I do, however, prefer that no single party has control of the house and senate. I like the check and balance system, so no one party can get too crazy and get away with too much.
  3. The first thing I would do is explain to him that his behavior is disrespectful, then give him examples of respectful actions and disrespectful actions...and remember he is only 5. That was a pretty intelligent response for a 5 year old. lol. Let him know his "punishment" CAN get worse and it is a lot more fun to be able to come home and play. One word of advice, don't use writing or reading as a punishment, it will come back to bite you! I once made my son clean all the baseboards in the house with a toothbrush and cup of cleaner. When I grounded him I took away anything that took electricity
  4. Laugh now, next month all the roosters will want to look like this.
  5. I am a diehard democrat, but I have to say, I am shocked at how many people were there camped out just to wait for the forms to get on a waiting list for public housing. They had manicures, cars, their knock-off purses. I wonder if they would camp out 2 or 3 days and stand in the hot sun to get a job. I truly understand if someone has lost their job and fallen on hard times. My husband was worried about losing his job after his company started getting rid of people who make over a certain amount and replacing them with people they can pay a lower wage. There is no job paying what he makes much
  6. Which package do you have and how much does it cost, if you don't mind telling us. I have direct and my contract is up. I have been looking into changing, but don't know enough about Uverse to make an educated choice.
  7. How about a "Southern Nights" theme? You could hang twinkling lights and candles from your patio, deck, trees-whatever, lol.... if you want to serve alcohol pick a couple of signature drinks, the watermelon margarita and Sangria sounds perfect for that or a rum bar with mixers in a great choice. You can also have flavored iced teas. Chicken fingers, catfish fingers, individual servings of shrimp and grits, or a slow cooked bbq pulled pork. (easy to do for a crowd and not expemsive) crockpot mac and cheese, deviled eggs, coleslaw, potato salad, redneck caviar, greens, sliced tomatoes... the id
  8. My dd is a musical theatre major, so we have been to LOTS of shows. lol. The ones at the Fox are generally VERY good. Sometimes better than on Broadway. The biggest difference to me is the sets. When they aren't touring, they can have elaborate, amazing sets. We saw Phantom on Broadway 3 years ago, and the set was perfect, but actually, the show was no better than many I have seen here in good ole Ga. If you ever get a chance to go see Lion King, go. It is an amazing show, and I didn't really want to go when we went. I didn't think it would interest me all that much. Same thing with the Color
  9. My son and I went to JRods today for a late lunch. My son is very picky, he went to culinary arts school and bakes for a living right now. While, of course, he had ideas to make it better, he enjoyed his meal and considering he usually doesn't like "country cooking" restaurants, that is saying something. lol. He got the fried chicken with tomato chutney, zucchini casserole and fried okra. I got the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and okra. Our food was very tasty and the service was great. I hope you all that have had a less than perfect experience will give it another try. I can tell the
  10. I checked into it, but they are only open Wed-Sat. We will be getting into that area on Sat, but they are not having anyone play that we are especially interested in that night. It is billed as the "Most Southern Weekend On Earth" or something like that. My hubby hates big, loud crowds so I am betting he won't enjoy it. lol. Then we will be leaving on Wed to go to the beach in SC. I hate it we are gonna miss it. Maybe next trip.
  11. Thanks for the reply! It is hard to plan a trip when you have never been somewhere and don't know the area. I am not expecting it to be "nice" ...I figure it will be more of a gritty town. lol. But then, everyone told us New Orleans (before Katrina) was a crime ridden dump, and we all loved it. We are pretty savvy travelers and don't take chances. I leave the good jewelry at home, wear the cheap stuff, don't carry a designer purse. As a matter of fact, I don't carry one most of the time. I am going to check hotels in the area you told me about before I make reservations in the morning.
  12. We decided to spend 2 nights in Memphis at the Graceland "All Elvis" Day's Inn. lol. Then we are going to Tunica for 2 or 3 days. We figure we can gamble, eat at the buffets and it is close enough to Memphis that we can always drive over and and do things. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have a preference in hotels in Tunica? Harrah's and Sam's Town both have great weekday rates. Well, shoot, all of the hotels in Tunica have great weekday rates. lol. I have never gambled at a casino in my life, but I figure it will be fun until I run out of my alloted $.
  13. How far a drive is it from Horn Lake to Beale St. and Graceland areas?
  14. Ohhhhh, my family is hoping it is Bojangles, but we love Popeye's, too!

I showed my hubby this thread because he is an avid bike rider, he wanted me to post this: I've been riding out from Paulding and Cobb since the mid 80's. I ride the roads, the Comet and I ride Mountain-bike. I do understand your frustration because I have to deal with it daily myself. (I'll give more detail later) But you've got to understand also the largest part of the cycling community out there do abide by the rules of the road or they would if they knew the correct way (unfortunately some folk just don't know). And just like any other group of people there are the Butt-heads who th
  16. We ate at J-Rods yesterday. The chicken breast with green tomato chutney was awesome. Perfectly cooked and very tasty! Very nice people with good service. They may still be working out a few things, I know opening a new restuarant you have to see what works for your area. And fix the minor things that need fixing and keep the things that work. I will definately go back and try some other things.
  17. I get what you are saying. I know when we have family from out of state come to visit they all want to see the 'sights of Atlanta" and I have no idea what they are so excited about. lol. We avoid Atlanta like the plague except to go to the Fox for shows. Last time they wanted to see Centennial Park and Stone Mountain and all I could think was how underwelming they were. What is the goats on a roof place?
  18. My daughter sings jazz and blues and has wanted to go to Memphis since she was 16. She just turned 21 and now that she can get in to the blues clubs we are going. I have never been there, and would really appreciate some advice on places to go, places to stay, restaurants to go to, places to see, etc. Has anyone been? Any advice? of course, we are going to Graceland. Hokey, I know, but she loves Elvis. She wants to stay in the Elvis Days Inn right across from Graceland. Has anyone ever stayed there? All I know is on the website they say they are "all Elvis, all the time" and have a guitar sha
  19. I have had hypothyroidism since I was 12 years old...and that was over 30 years ago! I have been on synthroid, proloid, armour thyroid, naturethroid, levothroid, cytomel, a lot of other throids and roxines-both name brand and generic! I currently am taking 130mg of naturethroid and feel fine on it. When I take synthroid, I can't function. My joints hurt, I feel weak, I couldn't even lift an iron skillet!!! The worst thing is the brain fog and hyper emotional state I would experience. I literally begged and made a deal with my dr. to let me TRY a natural thyroid replacement rather than the synt
  20. I looked it up online. It says that all women won the right to vote in 1920. Native Americans were not granted the right until 1924. Is that not right?
  21. 40 views, but no replies. Guess I am going to have to go yard saling. haha! Or thrift store shopping. Any ideas?
  22. I am looking to buy a used reasonably priced easy chair for my son's room. He doesn't like computer chairs so I was letting him use one of a matching set of easy chairs I bought for the family room. Well, I took it back when we got finished renovating and now he is chairless. lol. Does anyone have one they would like to sell me? His room is all beachy themed. Blues, aqua, gray, light wood. The one I let him use was cream colored. He isn't picky, but since it will be in my house, I would like for it to look ok. Message me if you have one. I will be checking.
  23. I would pick a theme and go with it. It is much easier. A pasta bar with caprese and tossed salads, garlic rolls and breadsticks is cost effective and you can offer as much or as little variety as you like. Pasta and sauces can be made up ahead, and put in chafing dishes. I would do a marinara type and an alfredo. If you want to spend a bit more a shrimp scampi sauce. You can have add-ins such as chicken, meatballs, mushrooms, onions, peppers, italian sausage. For appetizers you could do antipasta, an olive selection, cheese trays with crackers, etc. Dessert could be mini cheesecakes, can
  24. I know exactly what you are talking about. I was never a big "spanker." I chose to discipline my kids in other ways. They were really good kids and are both polite, generous, smart, caring, college going adults now. Not perfect, but I would stand them up next to anyone else's kids anyday. Maybe I was lucky, and just had great kids who learned their lessons without being spanked. And I would never presume to tell anyone else how to raise their child, unless they asked me. haha. Or someone was abusing their child. But I feel if you raise a child with love and CONSISTANT discipline, so they can
  25. [quote name=' So what would you do if you were in my shoes. While I can understand the Dad's anger and frustration, he handled things VERY badly. We had close friends when my children were little. Our son was a calmer, quiet child, their boys (who were 6 months older and 1 year younger than our son) were rowdy and rambunctious. Our son had to ride his bike on our long driveway unless we were in the road with him, theirs were in the road alone from age 4. The parents justification was "it is a cul-de-sac." They knew our parenting styles were not the same, and that we in no way would condon
