  1. Personally, I'd go with No. 1....Real Estate is coming back in a big way right now. And with values finally set back to where they should be, it's easier to move the homes into the buyer's hands than it used to be.
  2. Yes he was. It was heart breaking when the news tried to give him one more shot, and he was too old and a bit "out there" on time limitations. They would have to stop him on occasion so they could carry on with the format in a timely manner. He didn't last long on the retry, but it was great to see him once more before he had to retire for good. I'm sure Guy was probably thinking, (in the words of Brooks on Shawshank Redemption) "The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry!"
  3. Glad you posted this because I have a bunch recently myself. First time in 10 years of living out here. I haven't killed any so far. I picked up 2 or 3 and flicked them back outside.
  4. :clapping: I still have my Long John Silvers napkin that he signed in the early 70's when I was a kid living in Decatur!! This is a man who could tell you the weather, give you warnings, tell you how to crock a good pot of pinto beans, and court elderly women, all in a single broadcast!!
  5. The last I heard (about a year ago) is that the Tech schools still require old school drafting before they will move you into CAD. Jeez!! I certainly hope so. I'm sorry, but I've been drafting since I was in 6th grade (1977). My former company was awash in potential employees who failed at hand drafting but passed the CAD part. What this amounts to is someone who has NO CLUE as to what they are doing. CAD only makes life easier for guys like me. Without the essential "manual" knowledge, they're pretty much worthless to what we needed. AutoCad is simply an easier way to do what can only be lear
  6. I know what you mean. You don't have to dress nice to work for me. But I have been called a "hard-ass" on occasion. But that only refers to what I expect in a young man, that they are reliable, aint smoking no damned pot, and keep a happy face on whether they like it or not. Otherwise, they can show up in crappy clothes, messy hair, etc. Looks aint I what I need. I need someone who knows his way around tools, i.e. ratchets, sockets, screw drivers, and what not. And they have to be able to lift heavy equipment. I don't give out pee tests because I've been around long enough to smell booze and c
  7. I have something, as I need to hire and train a small engine tech, mowers, etc. Is he mechanically inclined? (I try to hire 1 or 2 young bucks a year, and I can teach them a lot, but they must have natural mech skills and foremost, a positive and happy/bright attitude.) Have him call me at 678-315-8794 Glenn
  8. I've been there, and in some ways still am there. I am now working from home with an engineering firm. However, before my career died some 7 or so years ago, I got into repairing mowers. I can tell you firsthand that staying at home and not getting out will turn you into a pumpkin pretty quick. When I changed my business to MOBILE it really changed my life. I HAD to get out and drive to my customers. Just getting OUT of your own house, for any reason, is imperative to maintain a happy life, as well as keeping a good social pipeline too. (Sorry folks, but FACEBOOK is not the way to actively be
  9. Thank you for clarifying that wind DOES have an effect on freezing water. I've got a host of hydraulic calc books that even have an equation for this, based on temp, atmospheric pressure and velocity. Likewise, even the animals in the water (fish, turtles, etc.) also have a major effect on freezing. Where aquatic animals gather on spots, those spots are the LAST to freeze....same as leaving your faucet dripping. Also see feelips comment about topography and its effect on wind channels.
  10. There are "some patches" but very few. The reason is because my stock of computers are fairly old, the drives are beginning to fail here and there, but everything is backed up on everything, multiple times, multiple machines, and servers. Like I said, I've no viruses in 8 years, so with that to go by, I see no need for worry. I have spent ZERO dollars on computers in the past 8 years, except for a graphics card I use for ACAD. Now that I am employed again, I can look into buying a new machine with whatever new OS is on it. With all due respect, I have almost memorized the warnings about no
  11. I'm still using my XP Pro with NO updates beyond the oldest usable IE available. I run Avast on everything I have and still to this day have had no problems, other than a hard drive burn out from so many years of use. Spybot still does a great job of keeping the malware to a bare minumum. I haven't had an actual virus for almost 8 years now. Of course, nothing will take the place of good old fashioned savvy about what to not download, what sites to avoid, etc.
  12. Even the SWAMP in my area has frozen on the top layer. Volume, depth, and wind are all factors as any engineer will tell you. The guy's a make-up talking head...nothing more.
  13. There's no substitute for good, solid drafting skill, using the older tools. When I used to screen new potential employees, the FIRST thing I looked for was HAND experience without any computer help at all. A computer program is only as good as the one operating it. And like you, I still use my old tools and skills for some carpentry and semi-advanced wood working jobs.
  14. I love it!! When I think back to the fact I actually started drafting when I was 11 and took drafting all through high school until my senior year, I've actually got almost as much time in "pre-CAD" drafting as I do with CAD....or very close to it. I still have all my tech pens, triangles, templates, compasses, etc.from the dinosaur days.
  15. Not on a regular basis anyway. I'm heading up there today just after lunch to meet with everyone and go through some jobs I'll be working on. While a daily drive would be a pain, it's still always good to meet in person every few days to discuss large-scale projects.
  16. Like riding a bike, my friend. It feels just as natural as it ever was. Luckily, doing something for as many years as I've done that certainly has helped though. I've also had small sporadic jobs since my lay off to necessitate using it enough to stay on top of things.
  17. Yes. I was going to tour with Bob Burns of L. Skynyrd fame. Unfortunately, Bob's health got down and he was not able to take the demands of touring. We all love Bob and his health was certainly more important to the rest of us than to risk it. Me too. You know I wish you the best of luck, and will always try to help in any capacity I'm capable of.
  18. I finally landed some great contract work for a civil engineering firm in Kennesaw!! All the work will be from home, so I will continue my mower and small engine repair service, as I remain determined to provide my local community with a much needed service during the warm months, and try to keep business within my local area. I appreciate all the moral support I have received from many of you, as well as the business you have brought to me. It means much more than to me than I can adequately put into words. Thank you all for everything!! (And don't hesitate to call me for any mower r
  19. They truly are the best in the county!
  20. I would agree with that. A those who don't know what moderation is can continue to mold that ass-shape in their favorite recliner and laugh at episodes of Gilligan's Island while the rest of us move forward in our lives.
  21. Of course, it's not being prescribed. I don't know anyone in my whole life that gets medicinal pot. And he, like others I know that are chronic smokers actually "think" they have more brains about them. Maybe in creativity, but even then, that's only enhanced when you smoke it from time to time and can still get high from it. He is far from sharp-minded anymore, often forgets what he's talking about and always looks like he's gonna bleed to death if he doesn't keep his eyes shut. Last time we spoke he accidentally mentioned that he's spending over $300 a week on it. All he smokes is this reall
  22. ONE wife is such a drain on a man, that I never understood this whole polygamy thing to begin with! "Thank you sir, may I have another?"...."Thank you sir, may I have another?"...."Thank you sir, may I have another?"
  23. Okay...so I AM a rock musician and with that comes a LOT of people who like to smoke pot. I'm not even against legalizing it. Personally, after wasting some years in my 20's, I realized it just wasn't my "thing". Well, in the past couple of years, a couple of my better friends (who were not allowed to smoke pot because they were in pain management and got tested monthly) failed the test and were removed from their pain meds. Okay...well, they both were given another newer drug to help them deal with withdrawals from their pain meds. However, they both have a green light to smoke pot again. One
