To all of you who are facing your first holiday
MissSophie replied to Lady Raider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
This is my fourth year without my mom; and Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday. She always enjoyed cooking the holiday meal and this is a day that I can't see myself going to a restaurant. I just love cooking on this family day. So, I still make the turkey the way she did and serve many of the same dishes. This is a holiday filled with wonderful memories of her. After the meal, mom would sit down and pick every bit of meat off the turkey bones and divide the dark and white meat. While we were cleaning up - we would SING - yep! Our favorites were "You Are My Sunshine", "Abba Dab -
I am the yankee girl; we always called it a bedroom suit - but never actually spelled it out because didn't know what was correct!!

MissSophie replied to Lady Raider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I really don't know - I always have to search for it because it is so old. But I do find that almost every year, they show it. I love it so much I am thinking about trying to order it online. Keep looking for it; I promise you will not be disappointed.! -
Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn!!!!!!!!!!!! I meant to call from work today to order a pumpkin pie for tomorrow and forgot. Will you have ANY extras made for tomorrow?? Sorry, no comment on the biscuits!

what are some of your favorite hoilday movies?
MissSophie replied to Lady Raider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
A very old movie from 1957 is called "All Mine to Give" - I absolutely have loved this movie for many years. And of course - It's a Wonderful Life" in black and white. -
I make it every year. (I am a transplanted yankee but a southern gal at heart). Stale white bread WITH the crust; I shred it by hand. Onion, celery - lightly sauteed in butter; add to the bread. Season to taste - parsley, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, etc. Eggs - a few; maybe 3 or 4 - milk and/or broth. My mother never made it with broth. After turkey cavity is thoroughly cleaned out - salt and pepper it and put the "stuffing" inside. Put that baby in the oven the night before Thanksgiving at about 275 (add a little water or broth to pan. Get up once or twice and bas

Did you put your Turkey in the frig today
MissSophie replied to Lady Raider's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Bought fresh this year; but Mom always put the frozen bird in the fridge about Monday; then submerged it in water all day Wednesday; then stuffed the big guy on Wednesday night and put him in the oven around midnight. Nothing like waking up on Thursday morning to the smell of that fabulous turkey!! -
What are you planning on fixing for Thanksgiving?

Almost every store brand is made by a name brand. There is no way, for example, that Kroger would manufacture everyone of the items in their store. Now - sometimes you get the same flavor and quality - sometimes you get a product made with less expensive ingredients. Look at cars, for example - they make an expensive model and then a cheaper model. The food industry does the same.

Hey! I'm so sorry. But time to continue Mom's tradition. Is she well enough to give you her tips on making the turkey?? I'll bet she would love that she is guiding you for your very first "big bird". My daughters also never cooked a turkey and then about 3 years ago; not on Thanksgiving, they decided to surprise me with a turkey meal. It was fabulous and they were so proud!! This might be the year you dive in and just DO IT! Best wishes for whatever you decide. Fill your day with memories of lovely holidays past!!

I remembered that several years ago, DD had the opportunity to go to California with her Dad to visit family for Thanksgiving; leaving me alone. Well, I started asking around and found out there were quite a few people around who did not have family in the area and were actually spending it alone. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday meal to cook. I made the turkey and everyone was assigned to bring a dish and their own beverage. We had a great time!! Just an idea for some of you single/alone folks out there. Make it a party!!

Just goes to show that no matter what your station in life; this disease of depression can touch you and your family. -
LMAO!

I just now clicked on the link and my first reaction is exactly what you said - there is a reason she is here!

Do you mind sharing where you stay in Pigeon Forge? Beautiful pics!

Baked Salsa Cha Cha Chicken, potatoes, fresh sauteed asparagus What a great night to listen to the rain - I love it!

I sometimes add a small tea bag of apple/cinnamon - it adds a great flavor to the tea.

You all cook the most delicious dinners; this was a good day for grilling. I made some Jambalaya with turkey sausage for later in the week (to save from cooking every night) and tonight will be a nice steak with potatoes and asparagus. Go ahead, let me hear it cause y'all will have meats with all the fixins' and biscuits and sweet tea. I can only hope one of you will adopt me.

I guess I like to think he is teaching his son that even the smallest of jobs can help feed a family. I was raised in a farm community and small children started young in the fields. Of course, if this is a situation of safety, that would be a different matter. Just think; when that little boy grows up he will tell his kids how he had to stand on the corner and sell newspapers with his dad just to earn a few dollars. One of those war stories we all listen to - and yawn - and think; here he goes again!!

Praying for peace and comfort.

I hate when people do that. I give 15% if they manage to show up and deliver the food. Someone has to do a really bad job to get less than that. And once again - if the food is poorly done - that isn't the server's fault and in that case, you need to speak to the manager on duty. I think everyone should expect to get 20% if they do a good job and more if they do a great job!
