On the desert mesa of New Mexico, miles from the nearest town of Taos (pop. 5,700), Star-Wars-like shelters rise from the earth, half-buried and covered in adobe. Called “Earthships” - brainchild of architect Mike Reynolds in the 1970s- they’re nearly completely self-sufficient homes: no electrical grid, no water lines, no sewer. The Greater World Earthship Community, about 70 passive solar homes built from earth and trash on 633 acres, had a rough start; they were shut down as an illegal subdivision in 1997 and it took them 7 years to come to compliance. Though today, the county fully cooper

Insurgent Commissioners saved tax payers millions today

What you folks need to remember in your criticisms of both the Dallas Mayor and the Hiram Mayor is that both offices are classed as 'weak' mayors in the structure of government. The power is lodged in the city councils. The classic example of that was the inability of the former Mayor Jeff Miller's - God rest his soul - inability to fire city attorney Glenn Stinson back in the early 1990s. You can bet that the city council in Dallas is well versed on the fines and its inaction on addressing that issue is THE ISSUE. pubby -
Insurgent Commissioners saved tax payers millions today

What I was reacting to was the alleged 1.5 million savings that Whitey claimed. As far as whether the fiber optic network put together by the company that Jerry Shearin was involved in works (after he left the commission) that is another question altogether. Why the county has not 'activated' the 'authority' that it has to oversee that remains another question and one that does lay on David Austin's platter. pubby -
Insurgent Commissioners saved tax payers millions today

Really, he saved $1.5 million by avoiding the running of copper trunk lines to the airport? First, it wasn't established that the existing fiber optic cables that already are at the Airport couldn't have handled the digital traffic. Second, even on the high side, they assertion - disputed by Mr. Crow, was that the cost would be $50,000/mile for ten miles or a half million but possibly as low as $20,000/mil or $200,000 total. (not a million and a half.) How it got to be $150,000/mi is a mighty leap in imagination. Heck, White, exaggerations like that and you'll be telling us that -

Oh, I think the general attitude toward the airport would be much better if the people running it weren't schooled in the attitudes of "Appalachia" - i.e. the notion that you get the other guy before he gets you. It was a topic I brought up a month or so ago that talked about the 'various nations' ...there were 11 in all including "Old South, Appalachia, The Midlands, New Netherlands, Yankeedom, etc." The telling description regarding the Applachian settlers and their culture falls on this observation. In contrast: ... just a paragraph above the above, the article states as explanati

Whitey: You must think I'm really dumb to think I would be able to beat Todd in the general election in west Paulding running as a Democrat. It was a long shot at best. Speaking of Todd, what you don't know is that I told him of my plans in November/December 2013 and told him that I didn't think I had a chance in hell of beating him in the election but what I wanted to do was provide a way to demonstrate how Paulding.com could be employed to provide a new way to select and elect people to office. I anticipated ... and he seemed good with it ... that we would invite folks to talk about t

Rockster: You're funny. What you didnt know is that when Ellery got me signed up with Google, he kept the password and I've never been able to access the account. Oh, and when he left to form, with some other folks, 278, he took that info with him and I went in and shut it down. Now I only use the free service (analytics) and have never gotten even a cent from the google. Often, in cases like the Christmas Parade - especially the one that I paid for the entry - I was busy video taping the entire parade for the entire community. Oh, and rather than sitting around drinking beer and party

I re-watched that segment and found a youtube of it. The thing that Maher points out is our history with them. What have we done? Watch the video and you'll see we shot down an Iranian airliner with over 200 civilians onboard; we negotiated some dirty deals with them (IRan/Contra come to mind?) and heck, even that nicest of Presidents - I liked IKE too - sent the CIA in to overthrow their democratically elected government in 1953. Frankly, I am amazed they are still talking with us. pubby

Just as a matter of fact, the surepip's filed at least one if not more than one motion to have Judge Osborne recuse himself from their case and it was not addressed for some time but was finally granted. Their fortunes improved, I might add. Usually one only seeks to have a judge recuse themselves when the attorney or client perceives a true conflict of interest - whether that conflict is real or just perceived. Do you recall the grounds on which the judge was asked to recuse himself? I mean I hope it is not like he owns 30,000 shares of Delta or his daughter is married to the CEO or h

These are my conclusions. I will admit that I've not gone through the actual court filings which I would have to do to form an opinion because, as suggested above, there are so many reasons from legitimate concerns about legal process to silly actions designed to delay that can be involved. As I understand it there were two or three actions in the state courts and one in the federal courts. To suggest the legal scene is confusing is an understatement. For instance, the reports I saw regarding the federal law suit was that it was settled with the agreement that there would be a formal en

Why? Because I don't buy into the right wing meme that Jade Helm 15 is Obama's effort to institute martial law? No, no meds at all. I feel pretty good also. I do know that many of those who oppose the airport oppose it because it disturbed their nice life isolated in the Paulding forest. Other are against it because it would tend to bring economic growth. This would include the folks in Atlanta. The reason that I see to support commercial aviation in Paulding is based on two basic facts. First, there are a paucity of business and industrial companies located here that would

The money was spent, the advertising delivered and it sure wasn't Santa Claus backing them. With the new campaign laws there are so many ways to hide things that 'plausible deniability' easily covers the tracks of those who seek to deceive. Assertions of corruption are also unfounded and statements of alleged illegal activity. The reality is that it would take the power of the courts including the ability to force depositions, subpoena records and a law suit that alleges that the activity was illegal to 'prove' the allegation. Since the GOP dominated Supreme Court threw out limits on c

The conversation continued and it was mentioned that the we still have all the same options we had before the deal beginning with bombing or going to war. Literally, the choice to oppose the deal is literally saying you don't want to give peace a chance. pubby

I didn't know Tom Cable is able to do that. Really, I'm impressed ... especially considering the legions of associates available to the plaintiffs have to thwart such moves. I mean there is no doubt that the firm (and other big law firms with resources) could roll over on a one-man shop like Stinson. But even when Richardson was the speaker, Paulding's premier firm was no match for a slick big-city law firm with deep-pocketed clients who have the luxury of delaying until that point in time when they've presumably replaced all their opposition by judicious spending on campaigns and can

Published on Aug 15, 2015 The fearless trio talk about Paulding's morphing form of government in this edition of the Pat and Patti Show. Entitled the 'It ain't over 'till its over' edition, they also not only reveal the secret to getting over it, but demonstrating exactly how to do that. If you remember the line "You don't have to discuss much" from one of Paul Simon's songs, you know how simple it can be. Click for RECENT TOPICS click for RECENT TOPICS click for RECENT TOPICS

Even the figures you cite - 30 aircraft would have to have an average value of about $200,000 a piece to generate $60,000 in property taxes - shows the potential. A typical home in Paulding with a value of about $100,000, doesn't generate but $1000/yr in property taxes; you know. And the last time I looked, you don't have to educate a propeller or landing gear. Then consider the enormous difference in the taxable value of a commercial jetliner - a new 737 has a value of between $50-80 million compared to a nice four-seat single propeller aircraft which is more like a starter home in Pau

Whitey: There used to be a saying ... the only certainties in life are death and taxes. What we know is that the present administration, being who they are, tend to approach things like that famous Georgian, Ty Cobb, playing hard ball. No one ever confused Ty Cobb of being a good neighbor. Oh, and David Austin, Blake Swafford or Mike Jones are not my idol. I would avoid living next to them just as I would avoid living next to Ty Cobb. pubby PS: I know those counties with the planes have the "highest property taxes" in the world - they would because of the increased
