You're welcome to deny that the military is a socialist institution but just as you are welcome to deny that the sun comes up every morning or that climate change is a hoax. Here are some comments from 'debate.com' on the issue where the consensus was that the US military is a socialist institution. Your dismissal of the notion is just a denial of reality which is an integral aspect of the Republican brand. I think Bohner's decision to resign is because he could no longer maintain the hypocrisy you so easily embrace. pubby

I don't like labels but if you're passing them out, if you look at the structure of the military and the range of benefits, regimented lifestyle, provisions for food, housing, medical care all organized by the military hierarchy, anyone with a military background has been a part of America's most socialist organization ... i.e. a super-socialist. I am not one of those. pubby

Here is a link to a story in Atlanta Unfiltered that details how some 65 Georgia Corporations - everyone of which has well-paid lobbyists looking after their interests in the state legislature - have managed a way to avoid the state ethics laws and award favored legislators with cushy trips to the beak and golf resorts. The loophole is based on the tax-exempt status of ALEC, the group that serves up conservative legislators to businesses through retreats and so-called educational events where lobbyists present examples of model legislation; some of which is adopted in numerous states.

Maybe we ought to change the names of the parties to reflect their social attitudes. It might not be as bad an idea as you think because we'd have the 'socialists' and then the 'anti-socialists' Why am I not surprised that you are anti-socialist. The manner in which the former East Germany entered socialism - basically being run over and occupied by the Red Army at the end of WWII ... bears absolutely no similarity to the situation in the US or anywhere else anytime else in history. To say that this former east German is in any way prescient in drawing parallels is the height

Not really... I saw the Congress's dissing of the Pope as subtle ... but hidden... Kind of like the rolling of eyes by the military brass when Eisenhower delivered his warning of the military industrial complex. You do know that the essence of the "Bush Doctrine" in foreign affairs is best summed up as "Do unto others first" ... i.e. if we get the idea that country may pose a threat, as the worlds superpower, he said that we reserve the right to a preemptive attack ... asserting that doing something we don't like is provocative. This policy has morphed under Obama to include attacks

The GOP dominated Congress dissed the Pope big time, IMO ... how? Let me explain. The Pope was a bit hard to understand but certain phrases got applause from the MOC when they understood them. One example was when he said that America was the home of the brave and land of the free. There were several examples. The Pope, of course, was talking about change and the attitudes toward change and he said that the US should approach the world with the Golden Rule in mind. The Pope, I think, knew enough to understand that there are two golden rules ... one of which is those with the gol

Apparently Pcom's server went down around 2:45 today and given I was out of the county with my family ..and oblivious to the situation, it was down until shortly after six p.m. today when I returned and realized that I couldn't even get my email. Sorry about that folks. I don't know the problem other than it appeared the server and system had crashed invoking a call to the server service company. pubby

This is an incorrect perception caused by a law that, unlike any other institution in the world, the US Postal Service - an independent quasi-governmental entity - was required by federal law to fully fund its medical and pensions systems 75 years in advance in an effort by the GOP Congress to bankrupt the service. The only reason it doesn't run profitably is because of the mandates by Congress for them ... including the incumbents abuse of the congressional Franking privilege. You should get your facts straight. pubby -

The KY clerk who won't issue marriage licenses
gpatt0n replied to stercus tauri's topic in RECENT TOPICS
It really has nothing to do with the Bible. Her position in the scheme of things is to record legal happenings. She has neither the standing or the authority to object to them as clerk of the courts. I don't even know if she can reject them if they contain errors. She's a clerk for God's sake. Her assumption that she has any option other than to do her job is the height of arrogance. That she thought that she could with hold 'marriage licenses' from anyone is the travesty. Ultimately the decision to refuse the issuance of a license for marriage is a rejection of the fees charged by th -
You are a cyborg and there is an anthropologist studying you

On Sunday afternoon, my wife were listening to WPBA while we were driving home from a trip to Sam's club. We actually sat in the car for a few minutes because we were hearing how we were all cyborgs ... even those of us who pride themselves on their Luddite attitudes. See for yourself. pubby -
This has happened to me a few times over the years. This is anecdotal in its value but I've generally associated this with a memory exhaustion ... i.e. I've got so many windows, programs, etc. open that the portion of active memory associated with the new data just isn't displayed. It may be solved by either closing some programs or rebooting is one of the reasons I make this observation. pubby PS: It may also be browser specific.

Pat Hughes and Deena Sanfilippo name their new show and then talk about the increasing poverty, not only of residents but of ideas. Data from the schools free and reduced lunch program as well as video clips from the most recent commission meeting highlight and illustrate the discussion. "Bear dog" is missing ... on the SCT? Update - he's home
gpatt0n replied to gpatt0n's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The bear dog has returned home. I had left my number for my cell with the folks at Rambo's nursery. Apparently the family that lives near the nursery has a few kids and some dogs and Bear had ambled there, bolted once or twice, and then chose to have an impromptu sleepover. We got word about it today and my wife - largely because I forgot my cell this morning - had my phone and got the call and retrieved him. So all is well in whoville with less that 24-hours of worry and concern. pubby -

Bear dog ... pictured above, is missing on the Silver Comet Trail. He escaped the fence at my house sometime around noon - about a half-mile from the SCT as the crow flies (or dog roams) - and apparently followed the pedestrian traffic out to Rambo's nursery off 278. He hung around there for about an hour, I'm told, and resumed his roaming about ten minutes before I arrived ... after the folks there spotted him. I figure he started following the 'back to town' traffic and may be back in the vicinity of Tina Drummond Park (or maybe the Chamber trail head) ... and may indeed show up bac

Newsjunky... Do you think the first person drafted to claim conscientious objector status .. when there was no such thing ... was immediately accommodated? I don't think so. Some who did were subjected to ridicule and risked prison including boxing champion Muhammad Ali during the Vietnam War. Certainly Ali's assertion of conscientious objection to Vietnam was rejected several times by the courts but even those who did recognized that his court battle, which included the stripping of his Heavyweight Boxing Title and literal unemployment, represented significant sacrifice of millions
