The only thing that really matters is the gauge of the wire, and for most applications that isn't even an issue. Most package stereo systems use small 18 - 16 gauge wire, and that is usually sufficient. High power equipment or speakers with long wire runs should use 14-12 gauge wire to minimize loss and keep response crisp. Wire that is too small will not sufficiently handle the current spikes and will result in a "muddying" of the sound. It is true that laundry water is rough on septic tanks; the detergent interrupts the bio-cycle of the septic system. There are some chemicals you can add, like Rid-X, that will help to offset that.
