MrsB
Right now Deal is winning and even after a recount I predict he will face Roy Barnes in November. Even though I know better, I hope you aren't right. I heard there are still 6,500 absentee ballots that need to be counted in Fulton. I heard it on the radio this morning. mei lan
I voted for Karen because if Deal winds up winning, he will go down in flames. King Roy learned from his mistakes, and he will eviscerate Deal on that whole ethics thing. Word on the street (ok, the AJC political blog) is that he'll combine attacks on Deal re: the corruption/ethics thing with attacks for same on Casey Cagle, who was somehow involved (I haven't cared enough to even pay attention). So he gets a two-fer. But maybe I'm wrong. I've been wrong before. I'm just so sick and dang tired of the same ol' same ol' in politics. ::sigh::

DonBrownJr
I'm surprised at how close all the races were. The governor's race is a particularly close one. I looked at the SOS site, and Paulding only reported a 5 vote difference in the candidates! This just reinforces that every vote counts. chainshaw1
After Paula stood on my doorstep and degraded my friend, Kim Cobb, I will not be voting for her. Kim had nothing to do with this election and should not have had anything to do with her run for this seat. As much as I was upset about the way that Daniel Stout had handled his situation, I still voted for him. Will Avery will be my choice in November. I have not voted for a Democrat in over 10 years, but I believe Will is about to change that.

gpatt0n
Steve: Everyone is hopeful for a positive transition in the DA's office. The whole purpose of politics and elections is not so much to determine winners and losers in life - everyone who puts themselves out there is in some way a winner - but to provide the public with the people with a choice. They will select the person whom they have the greatest confidence to perform their business. The key issue in government is, was and always will be good, efficient and equitable government. That is what is in the public interest and serving the public interest is coincidentally Paulding.com's mission. I will say that your presence here did increase my confidence that all would be well in the eventuality that Dick won. Your willingness to present yourself and your case for DD was, IMO, appropriate. Paulding.com always encourages a diverse and passionate debate. Steve, as the transition continues, I do hope you will feel it appropriate to use this site for communicating the progress made to the public. You certainly are welcome as is deadeye, should he choose to venture back. Finally, congratulations to Dick on his win. I know it must be satisfying after so many disappointments, including the 11 vote loss to Drew four years ago. I can actually remember meeting Dick the first time when he ran for sheriff back in the 1990's. I know winning elective office has been a long-term goal of his and he deserves congratulations on attaining that ambition. pubby

I would like to see Deal address the allegations and not just dismiss them as politics. There clearly was something there, and I can't come up with any "innocent" explanation as to why a US congressman would intervene in state contracts with a company he has an interest in if it wasn't to use his influence to fatten his wallet. If there is a good explanation, let's hear it. We have heard what Mr. Graham has said, and we have seen the emails between Riley and Chandler. These are serious charges that include Honest Service Fraud, Using his position for personal gain, improper use of appropriated funds, and taking actions that discredit the House of Representatives (yeah, OK this last one is a joke). It's also very obvious that his "retirement" the day before the charges were to be filed was no coincidence. I'm just not sure how he will defend these charges, but I would like to hear him take a sincere stab at it. If he doesn't, Roy will beat him senseless with it.

He came in to speak to Graham about Graham's intent to drop a program that required that all totaled vehicles be inspected before they could be resold and placed on the road again. He was not successful. As I understand it Graham dropped the program and the requirement. I believe Graham was also a Handel supporter. The company in question only got about 15 or 16% of the business for that program in the state of Georgia. They no longer even apply for government contracts and haven't for a long time. Yes, I think Deal will have to put out a clear explanation to the voters and it needs to be detailed. I also think the opposition will work hard to make any charges they can stick. If he had lost the nomination this would have gone away.

If he had lost the nomination this would have gone away. You are simply stating that he no longer tries to fatten his wallet at the expense of the taxpayer and to the exclusion of other private enterprises. He lost and got caught, that's what happened, at least the way I read the evidence. He had a no bid contract with a state agency that put $150k in his pocket every year, and there is substantial evidence that he tried to use his position to maintain that situation after the State Agency in charge of the program tried to save the taxpayers $1.7 million by modifying or eliminating the program. This happened long, long, before any run for Governor by either Handel or Deal. I would suggest that Deal's apparent heavy handed abuse of his position is what made Mr. Graham decide to support Ms. Handel. There was more than one meeting, there were multiple emails, there is substantial evidence of the charges against him. If he genuinely sees no problem with his actions, if true, then he has been in Washington politics too long to be an ethical representative of the people of Georgia. I would like to see him answer the specific charges, and show how or why he either did not take the actions alleged, or how and why they are not a clear violation of the rules of the house and the laws of the US and the State of Georgia. The only reason they were dropped was because he "retired" the very day before they were to be formally brought before the ethics committee to decide, thus ending the ethics committee's jurisdiction and taking away their power to punish.
