  1. In an emphatic defense of privacy in the digital age, a unanimous Supreme Court ruled that police may not search cell phones without a warrant. http://www.ajc.com/news/ap/top-news/justice-limit-cellphone-searches-after-arrests/ngSBx/
  2. This may all be a moot point pretty soon. Day vs Floyd County Schools will be decided some time soon and change the landscape for teachers. Day was a teacher in Floyd and was laid off. Under State law teachers at charter schools are at will employees and are not entitled to due process. Thats one of the issues for charter schools, it is supposed to be easier to fire teachers, etc. However the State DOE is now saying all teachers are entitled to due process at all schools, even charter schools. Floyd County has appealed the decision to the courts and it may make it to the SC of Georgia.
  3. You miss the point. Teachers who have due process rights have the ability to request a hearing, etc. So they can not be "fired at will". In a system WITHOUT those rights and contracts a teacher could just leave.
  4. This is actually an interesting issue becuase it cuts both ways. The easier it is to terminate a teacher, the easier it becomes for teachers to just quit. Thats the flip side of the coin. Most teachers would not quit in the middle of the school year but..... Cobb starts giving a cash bonus to AP math teachers to fill a need. A teacher could leave in the middle of the week, year, etc. to go work in the next county. All of a sudden you don't have teachers for a subject in the middle of the year and your kid can't take a college level course their senior year. Hey, at will employment me
  5. Yeah, but maybe the position and the duties should be eliminated. I would be ok with an appointed position that does not have the same (or limited authority).
  6. On second thought. Buck's statement about flexibility is pretty bad. "I support local control and flexibility for school districts and communities that have demonstrated their commitment to higher accountability for student achievement in exchange for greater flexibility" Local control and flexibility are a given. They should not be a reward that communities earn by "demonstrating their commitment"!
  7. It seems that they both have really differnet ideas about education. However, Woods seems to be leaning towards a better path. I like the fact that he appears to understand that we don't want or need anymore Fed or State programs (funder or unfunded). At this point the next State Super should concentrate on decentralizing education decision making away from the Fed and State level and pushing it further down the line to parents.
  8. I usually only hit the close out items at KRoger and manager specials. The Boss does most of the shopping an cooking but I add my 2cents in when I can. We rotate in China Mart when we need to and they have good prices on stuff. Most meat is from West Metro or other local sources. Oh, add in the dollar store on some can goods every once in a while. The fresh stuff usually runs out every 2 weeks but most other stuff is in good supply. Between food saver and deep freezer everyone should at least have about 6 weeks of basics. (my opinion).
  9. Um, thats a great list. But you forgot the family protection devices with extra magazines.
  10. Thank you to everyone that voted for the ESPLOST. Many people understand that public school financing is not a simple matter. The fist step is understanding that public schools are funded from three different pools of money. 1. Local; 2. State; and 3. Federal funds. Of these separate pools of money, each has rules and regulations about how you can spend the money. In terms of authority: 1. Federal law regarding education funding. 2. U.S. Dept. of Education rules and regs. 3. State law (O.C.G.A.) regarding education. 4. GA Dept. of Education. 5. (or dead last) Local Board of Educa
  11. In order to plan for the long term growth of our school system we have to ask the community for the approval now. 5 and 10 year plans call for dedicated revenue sources and we have to plan ahead.
  12. Well, the debate had some high points and some really really low points. I think, years ago, K State offered a candidate training program sponsered by one of their departments. It was free to all parties but you had to sign up in advance. Hint, Hint!
  13. That is a valid concern with common core but it has been in the works now for some time and implementation is well underway. How do you propose to back out of it? Would you replace it with something else?
  14. It depends, charters in general are sometimes good ideas. But the charter concept in Georgia is based on contract theory. Meaning, you can replace the word "charter" with contract. Therefore, just like all contracts, the devil is in the details. Thus far, it is not exactly clear what the terms of the contract with the state of Georgia will be. The state has been known to not fulfill some agreements. At this time, I would like to have a lot more information about the long-term plans for funding, management, checks and balances, etc. right now there are more questions than answers.
  15. Interesting to say the least. My 2 cents: I have rarely seen anyone posting under their own name be kicked off. Advertising for name ID is always a plus. Commenting on different subjects maybe not so much. I have seen different candidates in different elections answer questions in online forms. It depends on the candidates personal tastes and quite frankly their ability. If someone is always looking for a favorable audience and never wants to be asked questions that really have no answer, they are in the wrong business. Generally, not always, a person has to be thick skinned to be a public s

  17. As the legislative session has now ended we have a better understanding of what was passed. Thank you to a member of our Paulding delegation for working on education issues: "Under HB 826, schools would no longer be forced to expel students who are caught with items like a fishing knife or a baseball bat in their cars on school campuses. Currently, if a student is found on a school campus with these items in their vehicle, they are automatically suspended and charged with a felony. In these cases under this bill, local school systems will now be able to issue lesser penalties if they have
  18. Maybe there should be another topic strictly on Family Court, etc. When you get outside of Metro Atlanta the dynamics of those who serve the community in domestic courts is suprising. They aren't the high paid attorneys you find in some parts of Atlanta.
