When I travel overseas (I recently returned from SE Asia) I always come home more humbled than I ever wanted to feel. I try to support mom/pop side of the road establishments as much as possible when I travel, rather than larger stores. I went to Cuba one year right before Christmas and found NO joy in the gifts my family bought for me.....expecially after I saw a father cry when I told him I would leave my clothing there for his daughter (my size/age). I didn't need the clothes because I have a closet overflowing full of them. He didn't care that I had worn them and that they were di

I got my electric pencil sharpener for $16 @ Sams last week!!! Furloughs suck....I think my issue is how they were passed down at the last minute. Some teachers literally went to work the next week and everyone was scrambling. I think had we had more notice, we [school systems AND teachers] could have better planned. Now we don't even have the option of cutting back in order to lessen the impact. I personally wouldn't have made several major purchases had I know I would be losing $900 in the next 3 months.....and possibly twice that before the end of the school year. Add to that the fact

My sister got a letter concerning unemployment and the Pell (sp?) grant. Add that to the Hope and any type of schooling or certification program is covered. -
The tax-deducation caps at $250. I was talking to my BIL and he asked how much I spend and I told him $125-ish. He said "oh, that's not bad" I flipped out on him (partly becasue it was furlough friday and that stresses me too)........NOT THAT BAD? These aren't even MY children that I spent MY money on after the state has said they are cutting MY pay by 3 days. (Sorry, I don't usually feel this selfish, but I'm financially strapped too.....) As a school, we spent a lot of time talking about the fact that MANY of our families are facing financial hardships......but so are our teachers. THEY

Someone must have backed out of their contract at the last minute. At the end of last school year many elem. teachers got laid off.

holy cow. I think many of the lists are overkill. Seriously. I really need to start putting insane things on my lists to see what kind of things I can get parents to buy

The county doesn't have any money. the bond money was for BUILDINGS---hince the 2 (or is it 3?) new schools opening this year. The state cut our funds by 3% a few weeks ago.....this was in ADDITION to the cut back in the spring.

WalMart has supply lists and sometimes the library does too

The average MS/HS classroom has over 100 students going in and out of it each day. Lots of tissues, lots of germs

Yes, and less than 1/4 of the students actually bring it in (beyond elem. aged).....if even that many. I think last year I got 6 boxes donated. During peak cold season, my classes (small group ESEP <20 total kids) went through a box a WEEK.....non-cold season it may last 2 weeks. I spent >$75 on hand sanatizer and tissues last year. I've already gone to Sams and bought a pack for like $10 and got 2 gallon-sized bottles of handsanatizer from Wal-Mart---another $10. It should get me through the first grading period.

Holy crap----as an 8th grade teacher I have no clue how this all will be used... I told my parents: Binder Dividers Paper Graph paper PENCILS A lot of math teacher have smaller dry erase boards for students to use at their desk. Maybe this is what the DEM are for? If it's a donation, it shouldn't be on the list under supplies.....it should be under a donations tab with hand sanatizer (H1N1...what!) and tissues.

Loosing a baby once has got to be unbearably difficult.....but twice? Truely a tragedy.
