  1. I'm sorry about your situation and do sympathize with you, but everyone has a sob story and I just find it hard to support people getting cell phones on the very rare chance they will get to use it for its intended purpose when there are cuts being made to education and children with special needs and disabilities going without necessary medical services or seeing those cut. If I were a politician and could help make the choice between providing a family with a cell phone and granting a visit from a parental adviser to a family with a child with disabilities or illnesses to help teach that fam
  2. All they have to do is call the company that is supplying it and get it canceled.
  3. I have 3 young kids. Since you can't go anywhere anyway, if I were YOU, I would just make sure I had a phone plugged in so I could dial 911 if needed.
  4. Crap...how did you know that? Also, it is "mandible." I have no idea what a mandable is. I'm going to edit this and be the bigger person here...
  5. Want to know what I said? I told her she was a pathetic waste of life human being and to stop growing a fat ass courtesy of the government. The extent of our relationship hasn't gone past Facebook since she got on food stamps 3 years ago. I don't care who it is...I will report a family member for abuse of entitlement programs. It is 3 years since I reported her...and counting.
  6. Aside from the fact that it isn't free, because his kids, grandkids, and everyone else are paying for it. It sounds like he is not so old school and really just likes having a cell phone...for "free." Lol.
  7. What? He would never buy one, but the government is paying for him to have one? Again, wouldn't Life Alert be more appropriate in that situation? *sigh*
  8. Yeah, kittycat, my sister gets food stamps, about $400/mo for just her and her nephew-in-law, who she is raising as her own because the dad, who happens to be my sister's ex boyfriend as well as brother-in-law, died. Anyhoo......she gets the $400/mo and gets the government phone, help with her utilities, free health care from the ER, and who knows what else. Oh, and she also has no rent or mortgage payments because my mother bought her a house and 2 acres of land a couple of years ago. There really should be tighter restrictions on who can get these phones.
  9. Hilarious...can only imagine my boobs calling for emergency help.
  10. I know how it works, but I said what I said in reference to your comment that he views it sorta views it as one of his benefits. Being in the Army or any branch of military and paying taxes doesn't mean you should be entitled to a phone. I don't know your stepdad's situation, and he may not be paying for luxuries like the internet or beer. In that case, it is not as much of an issue.
  11. My dad was in the marines, but a free phone wasn't part of the deal. I'm not saying that poor elderly or disabled individuals shouldn't have some sort of access to something like this, but I think Life Alert or something similar would be more suitable. I think it is wrong that non-elderly, non-disabled persons can pay for internet and beer or getting their hair done and yet rely on the government for a phone.
  12. My sister has one. I guess it works fine. She also has the internet and satellite TV, which she pays for. Go figure. I think something like Life Alert would be more appropriate for the elderly.
  13. Wouldn't it be...Sug? A year is not soon, btw, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to go ahead and say I told you so. Gas will increase and cause things to reverse. Anything above $3.50 for unleaded and you will start to see the same issues from 2007 and 2008. People are already feeling it now as it is. So, let the countdown begin.
  14. This just in! Due to the glowing economy and $5/gallon gas, Ramen noodles surge to $2 per pack due to consumer spending habits shifting. Give me a break. I'm done with this non-argument. The only fact in this entire thread is that you have 0 idea what you are talking about. Google doesn't fix ignorance.
  15. OMG....ROFL...you should really educate yourself before you say anything else so ridiculous.
  16. Yes, this thread has turned into arguing with someone obviously uneducated on the subject.
  17. And what is your point? That in a year the economy will be much better? MY point is that it WON'T if gas continues to rise. The economy will dip or remain stagnant. Is the only thing you have to say to people is to bookmark your posts? No freaking thanks. It is anyone's GUESS as to what the economy will be like a year from now. But I'm pointing out to you that rising gas prices, whether a good sign or not, will certainly hurt any type of recovery.
  18. That is about to quickly be reversed.
  19. An improving economy, which is a bit of a stretch, does not warrant $4 gallon gas. And you will see the country dip further backwards as the price continues to rise, reversing positive changes so far. A good economy does not always equal high price. As I said before, many factors go into the price you pay at the pump. Right now, our declining dollar has a lot to do with the price we see as our economy is being injected with money.
  20. Zoo, I am also wondering where you learned so much about oil and its relationship with inflation, because most of what you say makes little sense. My stepdad has his MA in economics and a BA in history, and I really think you are quite confused about commodities and inflation. But...off to laundry.
  21. OMG...is this about gas or puke or lying? Gee..........
  22. My husband was a Linux/Unix Systems Admin, but he was promoted in December to Assistant Director of Technical Services and received almost 30% raise with that. I have been working since September as a medical transcriptionist from home, but I have no set schedule, so I have been working very little. Especially now that we don't "need" the extra income and my infant has hearing loss, I find it hard to find the motivation to work when I could be helping him and spending more time with him. Aside from the promotion, this has been our best year yet. We got out of debt (aside from mortgage) an
  23. More goes into the price other countries pay than just one factor. Other nations tax their gas heavily, and some countries use those taxes to help pay for things like health care and schooling. Oil is also priced in dollars, and countries whose currency has higher value do not feel the sting as much since they have higher purchasing power when the dollar declines in value. And again, mass transit. The majority of our country does not have the luxury to just hop on a train or subway and go to the market. Walking, biking, etc. is a way of life in these other countries you are speaking of. It wou
  24. Zoo, I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to make. Oil and its relationship with inflation is a very complex issue. If, however, oil prices rise to whatever price you have in your head that they should be, say $6-$10 per gallon, you will see rapid hyperinflation. The effects of gas prices that high would be double, maybe triple what we have seen already, and you think there will be enough peace and calm for everyone to just buy smaller cars and move closer to their jobs, and then everything is great? I think not. Bottom line is if oil goes up, EVERYTHING goes up, and then our economy s
