Groups lobby against English-only driver's license test
Jughaid replied to MillCreek's topic in RECENT TOPICS
That's because the most air miles are flown by American companies and US pilots have not learned other languages. Unlike the rest of the planet, we think the world has to conform to our ways at all times. -

"Melting Pot" means that sometimes other ingredients come to the pot that changes its "complexion." We'd better get used to it. The Native Americans had to. Guess Modern Americans need to do that too. What goes around, comes around. -

What about illiterate people who can't read? Should they be allowed to get a license? Currently, they get the test read to them. What about people who are dyslexic, very intelligent, can't read but can speak English very well? Should they be allowed to get a license? Currently, they get the test read to them. -

So "USA culture" is only those white people who speak English? Spanish speaking people aren't fit for our nationality? Riiiiight. -

The signs are universal. They don't need to know English to read universal road signs. If they pass the driving test on the laws in their language, then they should know enough to understand our driving laws. You're right. There might be more Spanish speaking people here one day than English speaking. So they might just follow your lead and make the most popular langauge the official language. Then they will follow your lead and tell you to learn Spanish because that is what most people speak. Then they will follow your lead and not put any documents in English for you because, -

But those illiterate people speak English and look like us. Never mind they can't read the street signs but can understand the universal sign emblems. It's about those people that aren't like me and you. -

Thank you for the information. About those signs. Aren't most of the signs in the "universal" mode? -

Traffic signs are in the "universal" and are uniform in most countries. The only signs that would require a language would be the name of streets or locations. Again, the problem is that if they can't pass the test because they don't understand the langauge, they will be driving without insurance or a license. Had you rather they have a drivers license and insurance and not know the language? Or not know the language and not have a license or insurance and still be driving? Don't forget that if we can say English Only in 2010, it may be Spanish Only in 2025 for all signs, tests and such. -

If they don't understand English well enough, they just don't take the drivers test and then they are driving around without a license or insurance. That is a recipe for disaster to the innocent people on the roads. If we can mandate English only today, twenty-five years from now it might be Spanish only for the test and road signs. -

Absolutely. And many do. I had several friends who did go to predominately black colleges and some taught at those schools. -

This sounds wonderful! Are you going to do more of these? -
Whilst you want the $85 mill, I'd settle for $8500.

Short sighted, maybe? Or could be that their politics has coloured their entire view of the world and they just aren't in reality any more? I think their behaviour indicates those are true, anyway.

I heard a news report today that says they do this because the reminders may cost now but it saves a lot more in the future. For ever 1% that mail it in, it saves $85 million in later costs. I found the link for that! http://www.azjournal.com/news/126/ARTICLE/5283/2010-03-24.html

This is why we have laws where government has to step in because private groups don't always do what is right. And yet some people keep saying we need less government involvement. Well, this sort of stuff would be more rampant. Be careful what is wished for. aw2008, I wish you guys the best in trying to fight this wrong.

Exactly. Even if the employee complains and the company has to fix it, it is easy to find something else later on to fire the employee. In this job market, you might not find another place to work either. I know lots of small businesses do this sort of stuff from what I've heard.

Yes.
