  1. It won't take effect until this time 2009, and correspondence/online schools don't qualify for the housing allowance. I'm very glad that they passed this, but I do online school because of the practicality of it all, and so I can keep working to support the family. I wish they would have added online to the bevy of benes.

  2. Thanks all...I found a great campsite at Chatuge Lake (Jackrabbit Mountain) at the NC/GA border. Really looking forward to getting away for a few days! We'll do Hartwell Lake next time!

  3. I can't find an available campsite anywhere. We'd prefer to find a beachside campsite near Savannah/Hilton Head or Panama City. Since I can't find any campsite available there, I'll take really any camp site anywhere in Georgia, especially in the northern hilly region.

Any ideas for camping or alternatives for fun during the 4th?

    Thanks for the ideas!!!

  4. Sleeping Cobb teen killed when pickup smashes into house...http://www.ajc.com/news/content/metro/cobb/stories/2008/06/08/teenkilled_0609_web.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab

Criminal charges are pending against a woman who police say careened through a Cobb County neighborhood in a large pickup truck before slamming into a home, killing a 14-year-old boy as he slept and injuring his sister.

The horrific crash happened just before 3 a.m. at a home in the 4500 block of Legend Hollow Lane in unincorporated Cobb, said Cpl. Dana Pierce, a Cobb police spokesman.

He said police believe the 44-year-old woman driving the Ford F-250 pickup may have been drunk, but they were awaiting results of alcohol and drug tests Sunday before filing charges.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister, 13, was treated at South Cobb Hospital for non-life threatening leg injuries and released.

Police have not yet released the names of the victims or the suspect.

Pierce said the fatal wreck happened after the woman had an altercation with her husband at a Powder Springs location. Police were called to the location, but she drove off in the maroon 2007 F-250 truck before officers arrived. She later ran a stop sign at Macedonia and Old Lost Mountain roads as she entered the victims' neighborhood on Legend Hollow.

She ran over several mailboxes and hit several curbs before ramming into the home through the garage. Her truck briefly exited the home then reentered and plowed through the 14-year-old's bedroom, running over him as he slept in bed. The truck pushed him through a wall into a second bedroom where his sister slept.

It finally came to a stop with her pinned against an exterior wall and her brother's body underneath.

A Cobb fire emergency crew spent several hours extricating the teens.

  5. Yeah, take the closer job if all things are equal. Get in good with the local company and maybe you'll get a raise there soon. Best of luck.

I have basically a hour commute oneway everyday (a little less now that the damn school busses aren't in the way), and I'd kill for more time not spent sitting on the EWC. Just thinking about the time I waste makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth.

  6. Upper Iowa University. I'm about a dozen classes away from a public administration degree. My wife attends Grand Canyon University, and she'll graduate in December with a degree in Psychology.

Online universities are great, but you MUST BE DISCIPLINED! Also, check out each universities accreditation, ensuring that it is a reputable school.

I've also heard good things about Troy, and the University of Maryland Baltimore College for online programs.

    Good luck to you!

  7. Thanks to all for your insights.

I sent the hiring manager an email saying this isn't the right opportunity for me at this time. There are just too many parts of the job that don't fit my personality. I hope a better opportunity rises so I can work in Paulding.

  8. I have about a dozen classes to go, plus a couple I'm trying to get waived, one (at a minimum) every 8 weeks. So...early 2010? If I could work close (here in Hiram, Dallas, maybe in D'ville or Austell, anything closer than Atlanta), I could double up the classes and get done sooner. I doubt, however, that I can find something that pays even close to what I make now here in Paulding. Car sales might be the only thing that I could possibly quality for.

I currently have 2 associate degrees, I'm a vet (5 point preference for gov't positions), and I have experience working with military families and trauma victims. But I can't find a job like that making what I make in insurance (marketing, sales support, exec assistant, graphic design).

I made a financial comparison to what I made as a married E-4 in the military to what I make now, making 40K plus annually. When you add up total benefits (housing & food allowances, medical) compared to what I make now, basically $3K a month after taxes and deductions like medical and FSA, I made very close to what I make now when I was in the military. Plus, I got more days off (30 days annually, gov't holidays). The figures get worse for now when you account for gas ($160 a month now...I know it is meager compared to larger vehicles, but I pay about $40 to fill up my 4 cylinder Saturn).

Maybe I shouldn't be considering the car dealership...maybe I should go back to the military!

  9. Thanks all.

My current job completely infuriated me today, but I still haven't made a decision. The idea of being so close to home is intriguing, but I hate the idea of possibly working 40-60 hours for maybe nothing.

  10. depends on how good of a sales person you are. I'd starve to death trying to sell cars... my son (the oldest) on the other hand would probably be a wealth man.

Thats the gamble. I haven't done this before, but I have worked with other sales. I'm a friendly guy, I laugh a lot and I can't keep a straight face if I see something funny. I'm also very honest and straight forward. My plan when meeting a customer would be to ask, is there anything you are looking for specifically, and if not, here's my card, come see me if you find something you like. Simple, but maybe not the most effective in terms of hard sales. But I hate hard sales. I don't buy from pressuring salesmen, so why would I be one myself?

  11. I would take the job. It'll be hard, being as you're going to school and all. However, my husband manages to goto school full time and hold down a full time job. It is doable, just keep your head up. Good luck!

I'm doing school now, and working 45-50 hours a week plus the 2 hour daily commute. My current job pays pretty well, but I can possibly do better. Maybe. Thats the thing. How much do car salespeople really make? Will I do well enough to give up my mid 40s salary?

  12. Hey all.

I was offered a job at a local auto dealership today. Help me with the pros and cons...

    Pro:

Close to home (10 hours commutting weekly)

Won't fight much traffic (currently work in Atlanta)

Chance to make very good money

I dislike my current job (insurance)

Feel like I'd be a good fit for this sales position

    Con:

Haven't worked in auto sales before

Long working hours, and I'm currently in school

Training and getting fully up to speed might take a while

    Work off commissions, nothing guaranteed

Don't have much of a buffer in savings, and the wife doesn't work (another topic for another day)

People need cars. Even in this economy, people are wanting cars, both new and used, especially if the MPGs are higher than what they currently have. Other markets around the nation might see a drop in auto sales, but since Atlanta Metro has such terrible public transportation, and Paulding is continuing to grow, I don't see this dropping too much. What do y'all think?

  13. First time, shame on you. Second time, shame on me.

If the manager admits that there have been a few pranks, how about calling back the number to verify the delivery address?

  14. I ask you this, how many trained military personnel that come home from Iraq go off the deep end like that? I'm sure that war affects different people in different ways but for this guy to try to use that excuse for brutally murdering someone as innocent as this girl is just not right. And there are people out there willing to accept this as as reason to let this monster sit in a jail cell for the next twenty years while her family has to relive that particular pain on a daily basis until he is sent to meet his maker. Show me the switch.

Not many go off the deep end, but he had problems before and during his service. We waste way too much time and money on these bastards, I say pop them in the temple and move on.

  15. A lot. He is a stupid juvenile, knows he won't get in much trouble for doing that. You on the other hand are an adult and would be charged with assaulting a juvenile, although he would certainly deserve every assault he got. He would most likely get probation and his record would be sealed. You would be sitting in the klink thinking about your wife's butt.

H probably took a dare, talked about it at a party and acted on it, or has some very serious problems. Most likely, all three.

Maybe. However, responding to an assault on one's spouse generally isn't charged very heavily, as long as it wasn't premeditated.
