  1. What is the difference between investing in a country by invading, controlling, and restoring (Iraq and Afghanistan) and just plain feeding those who need to be fed?

War-mongering vs the peaceniks. Some things never change.

Bottom line: some of our money will always go overseas in one form or another.

Personally, I wish we could take care of our own (slight isolationism, but not to the extreme of Post WWI and Pre WWII) and our own problems, before we "save the cheerleader...save the world". However, we still hold the throne as the dominant superpower (beware of China and its influence over our economy), and therefore need to lead the fight for human rights and justice.

  2. Ah, my favorite time of the year. I absolutely love Spring Training. Baseball is back! This is my first year on the "right" coast, and I really hope I can get some time to go hang out in Florida and see a few games, but, even if I don't, I just love knowing that baseball is back in action.

I'd imagine that there might be a few Braves fans here; how do you think they'll do this year? If Cox's Clobbers aren't your team, who are you rooting for? How will they do? What did you think of the off-season? Who will win it all?

I'm an Angels fan. Been rooting for them since the Cowboy owned the team. I love the pick up of Garland and Hunter, but I wish we could have acquired another bat and reliever. I think they'll win the West, but I don't know if they can beat the Red Sox or Tigers.

In the NL, I follow the Cubs. But, I think 2008 will pass without a World Championship for the Cubbies. The Mets look very formidable, but watch out for the Phillies and Braves. The East will be exciting!

    NL West: DBacks

    NL Central: Cubs

    NL East: Mets

    NL Wild card: Braves

    AL West: Angels

    AL Central: Tigers

    AL East: Red Sox

    AL Wild card: Yankees

    AL Champ: Tigers

    NL Champ: Mets

    World Series Champ: Mets

  3. Definitely sad. I feel for the families involved, but more so for the completely innocent mom and child in the Nissan. Thank goodness she is a responsible parent, or else this, as bad as it is, could have been tons worse.

Why would anyone even get into a car with a driver who has been drinking? There are so many lives affected by the stupid actions of one and the cowardice of those who didn't speak up.

  4. I had to go to the Cartersville office since that office serves Paulding county. I'm not sure if you can go to any office you want to or just to the one they tell you.

Yeah, I think you can go to any GA DOL location, however, you would probably get more assistance in the job hunt by going to the DOL that services the county that you want to work in. I know jobs are slim pickings, so I tried the Kennesaw location (Cobb County). Worked for me!

  5. Yeah I know, but I still cant bring myself to be an a$$ hole, Thats ok though, single means more money to spend on me :D

I hear ya. Its best to stick to your standards and someone one day will like what you have to offer. Not all women like the jerks: I married a total babe who liked the nice guy...funny now that she calls me a jerk!

  6. Ok, so if it is ratified can I stop holding doors and kissing a$$ and still get some?

You are old school. Many women prefer jerks / cash cows / powerful men. If that wasn't the case, you'd see supermodels with accountants, etc. Lois Lane liked Superman, not Clark Kent.

[i know, this is just a stereotypical generality, but...the old phrase, nice guys finish last, is usually right)

  7. Absolutely. The need to be treated just like the males in society, including selective service (the potential to be drafted in time of war), and standards for entry into the military. For example, for me to get a max score on push ups (when I was in the Air Force), I had to push dirt 62 times in a minute. A female got a max score at 27 pushups. Passing times for running are completely different too. I had a bum knee, and just missed passing once by a few seconds, but I lapped another female and she passed with flying colors. And you can't say that women can't push 62 times, or do over 50 sit ups in a minute. I know plenty of women that could and would regularly get better scores on their fit tests than I did.

Women should also be allowed to do the GI Jane thing and be welcomed into special forces IF they can meet the current standards.

I lost a good [female] friend of mine overseas (IED), so the argument that women need to be protected and kept in the rear with the gear does not apply with me, as that will negate everything that my friend stood for.

Men should get equal paternity leave (or an equivalent amount of time on short term disability) when their child is born. It is sometimes very hard for a father to bond with a newborn, and providing the father with more time initially with their child can only help down the road. We might have less deadbeat Dads if a connection was made directly from the start.

I firmly believe that equality is a great thing, but I highly doubt some of these standards will ever change.

  8. First of all, it is a shame that NH died. It is a shame that Van der Douche won't ever get his just desserts. That being said...

...I don't know if Natalee was discouraged by her mother to go to Aruba or not, but either way, even if my kid is 18, I would not want her to go out of the country for a senior trip. Are the parents of these teens so naive to think that sex, drugs, and alcohol aren't the primary reason for heading out of the country? The usual worst case scenario? Get drunk, charged with public intoxication or the like, pay the fine, and never return to that country. Can't do something like that here without having that follow you around for a while.

Natalee didn't deserve to be killed or at a minimum not provided proper assistance by this piece of Eurotrash. But, her motives for the trip weren't innocent, and bad things happen (in the US or otherwise) when heavy drinking and other extracurriculars are involved.

Does anyone really believe that if Natalee was a poor black kid from Mobile, would this case still be on the news?

  9. Howdy y'all,

I really need to get more fresh air time (19th floor office has got me down!), and I would really like to find a few good mountain trails (ok, large hills) in west GA and east Alabama. I've been to mountainzone.com and got some data on heights and coordinates, but I'd like to read some personal experiences.

BTW, what is the biggest "hill" in Paulding or Polk? (I see a hill due west of Vinings out on our neck of the woods, but I can't seem to pin a name on the thing).

    Thanks!

  10. Very informative book. I'm a newbie to Paulding, but wherever I live, I love to learn about the place. The Bookout's did a great job, and Mr. Bookout (first name escapes me, and I haven't met his wife, the author) is very nice.

I've noticed that there is a Bookout Street or Lane or something overthere east of 92. They must have sold that land for development. I hope they made a pretty penny on the deal.

Someone mentioned the Hiram Coffee House. I love that place. They make great Mochas, and they treat my daughter great. I was going to go today, but my little one wasn't in a good mood, and wanted to go home. Oh well. Maybe we'll go next week for the weekly Daddy-Daughter date.

  11. Did y'all hear about those 5 teens who were killed (most likely) while racing in Florida?

    http://www.local6.com/news/15144329/detail.html

It may be cruel, but I call this natural selection.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

There are obviously times and places to let your Beemer loose...on an 85 foot elevated runway at 3 in the morning probably wasn't one of them. Of course, now we'll hear the friends and families of these morons proclaim what good kids they were. Good? Perhaps. Intelligent? Mmmmm, no.

At least they didn't kill innocent bystanders with their stupidity.

  12. Amber, knowing that you have no job experience, perhaps you could do something that you could possibly put on a resume instead, like volunteer work or college. Check and see if Paulding Parks and Recs needs volunteers, or try different churches in the area looking for referrals for those types of opportunities. I know from experience that it is much better to be spending your time when not working by helping out in the community, instead of watching Oprah and Judge Judy. If you are really daring, consider the military or, if that doesn't float your boat, try the Peace Corp. West Georgia Academy is hiring, I think. Maybe you can get in there part time to learn daycare, and if you like it, then take classes to earn a early childhood education degree or the like.

Kyle, see above. Jobs aren't easy to find, and they are especially hard to get without reliable transportation (way to go, Paulding County...get with the program!!!). You might want to try places like QuikTrip, Marathon, 7-11 (do we have those here? I honestly haven't noticed), Kroger, CVS, whatever you can nearby.

Best of luck to you. Don't give up, and seriously, give volunteer work a try. It is all about networking, and like I said, building the community is better than sitting on your arse all day.

  13. Hola amigos. I make the week-daily trek from Hiram (Bill Carruth and Nebo) to Vinings (Paces Ferry and the 285).

I've been taking the EW Connector...blah. I leave here a few minutes after 6:30, and I know I am doing ok if at the Milford Church by 7.

Are there any suggestions on a quicker route? I would like to change up the directions from time to time, just to help learn the area and keep the drive somewhat entertaining.

    I appreciate the suggestions.

  14. my thaughts exactly :D

So you punish the hard working driver (ok, sometimes hard working driver) for the charge enforced by the company?

Don't punish people who 1) know your phone number, 2) know where you live, and 3) carry around your future consumeables...

I worked off and on at the "30 minutes or less" place (...I just saw that they brought back that slogan...absolutely stupid. Even if they mention "Safety first", the expectation is too high. There is just too much traffic, stores too far apart, and generally just too much danger on the road to promote a speedy delivery. Plus, the meet those stringent standards of delivery, shortcuts must be made somewhere. The person taking the order will be more rushed to get your order completed, the people making the food will not make a perfect product, and the driver WILL drive faster to get to your house. I'm sorry, most 18-21 year olds (I was 18 when I started) are not safe drivers. The 'noid is rolling in his grave over this decision!) for 7 years. I know people who screwed with people's orders when they knew they were going to a house that didn't tip, or were tipped poorly when providing great service. I never did that, and in fact told the managers about the problem, but it did happen, I promise you.

The best thing would be to be known as a great tipper. You tend to find service quite a bit better than those that don't tip.

    Just my 2 pennies.

  15. Try a temp to hire agency like Office Team or Account Temps. I can give you P.O.C.'s if you are interested. They work hard on your behalf, and you don't have to accept what they offer if you don't like the pay, location, etc.

    Best of luck!
