If you can get access to a hand vacuum pump it is real easy to check the egr valve by hooking directly into the vacuum port while the engine is running, If you can see the valve open and the engine starts stumbling and tries to die then the valve is good, if the valve opens but no change in the way the engine is running then you have a blockage in the intake manifold. if the valve doesnt open at all then the valve is bad. The next thing you would want to check is the solenoid that sends the vacuum to the erg valve if everything else was good.
