  1. Have you ever had an MRI? 1200, physical therapy $300 per visit. Ultrasounds, mammograms, lab test? It adds up very fast. Doctors now days like to cover the bases with diagnostics and labs. Run of the mill bladder or sinus infections don't cost much. Beyond that it is huge and the older you get the more they want to check. The cancer rate is 1 in 3 it is not a matter of if but when. Early diagnosis better your chance of survival. Catastrophic is a huge risk in this day and time. Catastrophic can bankrupt people fast if they are not careful.
  2. This is my take on the Home depot thing. A huge part of healthcare reform is preventative medicine. The type of plan they offer is cheap and very close to catastrophic. This means their low wage workers can't afford out of pocket expenses that allow people to get early treatment for problems before they become life threatening. People with high cholesterol will be prescribed meds instead of the tax payer being on the hook for open heart surgery. This is what people aren't getting the sickest end up in the hospital and the tax payer is on the hook for billions to keep the hospitals open
  3. Under the current way we pay for healthcare it will go up and it will be unsustainable. The claim system is what will have to go before we see the savings. What this means is the worse possible thing may play out and that is people opting for the government to be single payer because the rates will be low enough to drive insurance companies out. The better choice will be for people to choose healthcare systems. I think doctors will end up with more money in their pockets because administrative cost and malpractice is eating deeply into their bottom line. Systems can compete, governme
  4. I think eventually administrative cost will go down. People have no idea how little a doctor makes after he pays salaries for the administrators on staff. Every part of healthcare has a huge overhead due to administration. Another thing people may not realize is why underpayment from medicaid and medicare is so bad. The government has been using most of that money to keep our hospitals open. When you know what the real problems are you can judge if the solutions are right. Just like torte reform. Malpractice forces good doctors to pay for the bad ones. You can lower the price if you
  5. I don't think you will find systems like Kaiser on the exchange because they are not really insurance companies. It will be the same with Wellstar when theirs is up. I will keep my Kaiser, I don't want the government or regular insurance company to touch my healthcare dollars. I have a good understanding of why we needed healthcare reform. I also understand that it will be an evolutionary process. I believe that the actions of the public will dictate what we eventually end up with. If we find a principle that we agree with then it will go that way. The Republicans will come around v
  6. Say it isn't so! Why am I suddenly thinking Tang, Velcro, and yellow stickies Government support for research and development is responsible for much of the innovation that drives GDP, argues Mariana Mazzucato. Photo courtesy of Stephen Yang/Bloomberg via Getty Images. As the deadline for raising the government debt limit fast approaches, and wrangling on the issue in Congress intensifies, Mariana Mazzucato reminds us of the difference between public and private debt. Professor of economics at the University of Sussex, Mazzucato is the author of "The Entrepreneurial State: Debunk
  7. It's about balance, when someone or something makes you want to feel or act to an extreme, turn your back and walk away. Nothing in the extreme will ever make you happy or content.
  8. I think it is so cute. My grand parents would go to road houses for a drink. My grandad had to explain to me those were what they called bars back then.
  9. You are welcome to click the link in the other discussion and learn more about it yourself. It is not that difficult to understand. I can tell you hospitals have no love for insurance companies they are preparing to serve the people of this nation better healthcare than ever.
  10. What most people don't understand is that hospital systems will offer "insurance" it is not insurance in the way we understand it. You will pay a monthly premium that finances the hospital's operating cost. I am hoping that medicaid and medicare will also pay a monthly amount to the system the patient chooses. There is no reason to have a claim system.
  11. 90% of what people think they know about healthcare reform is pure speculation.
  12. I bet the grocery stores and owners of section 8 apartment buildings scream the loudest. The poor will go back to eating corn bread and beans and the cost of rentals will come back into affordable range for the working poor.
  13. It really is ok to stick up for your self. There is no reward for bending over unless your willing to take a few more inches. That is assuming you are middle class.
  14. Here is an interesting article about the shrinkage of the middle class. Not only are the jobs shrinking but so is our income due to the rise in cost of living. Middle Class Jobs, Income Quickly Disappearing (INFOGRAPHIC) We not only are trying to keep up, we also are paying the bulk of the taxes to support what amounts to about 51% of the population when you add the non-workers and the working poor together. On top of that we are the only portion of the population that is burdened with medical bankruptcy. The 51% is covered by medicaid and medicare. The rich are able to pay th
  15. Actually the middle class job market shrinking has the same effect. When that market shrinks it forces people to take the lower jobs and more of them also qualify for the subsidies for those working those jobs. As I have pointed out it is a matter of being pushed out and down. Nobody in the middle class is immune to it that job market is shrinking.
  16. Their wealth and power have insulated them from the consequences of their actions. Forcing up the cost of living on the lower classes will not even begin to effect them them in any negative way. Even violent revolution can be escaped when one is wealthy enough. This is the problem with a small percent being that powerful they literally rule the world. As long as people see money as a tangible the problem will get worse. It is a global issue, while we may be comfortable with our billionaires those from different countries and cultures should give us pause. There must be checks and balance
  17. Good to hear from you and glad things are looking up.
  18. Our perception of crime has changed due to the media. Violence like sex sells. We wonder why Americans are less happy, depressed... Look at our movies, media, games. The majority of it is negative. We are drawn to it like moths to a flame, in turn we are served more. It is a viscous cycle. If we dare to believe that there is a silver lining or a positive consequence, someone or something has to burst the bubble. Some of the richest entertainers and networks spew negativity and many eat it up. It really is a shame because life is better than it has ever been for the majority of people,
  19. I don't believe the school should be able to change the definition of what is a weapon. There is some risk involved in letting kids drive their cars on to school property. If the system feels that a pocket knife creates too much risk, then they need to stop allowing kids to drive and park on campus. They could have a trunk full of automatic weapons or even a home made bomb. All of them carry a more dangerous weapon in their car than the pocket knife and that is the tire iron. Schools are getting too deep into the illusion of safety.
  20. I was told the investigation of Sam is over. The infractions were minor and along the line of mistakes rather than any effort to commit medicaid fraud.
  21. I understand, I just wanted to point out how bogged down they were. I wish he could have been helped out rather than replaced. I had my bill in about 30 days because we knew we would have some out of pocket. My husband wanted to make sure Sam got paid.
  22. Oh no it wouldn't. I would cut the line with this thing.
  23. I would be sure I had caught an alien. Blobfish wins ugliest animal vote
  24. An ambulance service has to put in claims just like a doctor. They have to get paid by the auto insurance company, medicare, medicaid, medical also. You have no idea how hard it is to get this money. Sometimes you send in claim after claim for years. You have no idea how many people will take a settlement and blow it and you never see a dime. They spend so much time trying to collect this money, they have claims on their books years old waiting on retroactive medicaid, and cases to be settled.
