If you want to have a low score then how is -9 better than -2 ?????

The example given above is:
-30 (-5) 10
What does the (-5) mean?
Do you want to have a high number or low number in the (-5)? For instance do you want to have (-2) or (-9)?
DH works late tonight so it will be after 8:30 when he gets home. He is bringing home Arby's.
