Thank you ladies. I very much appreciate the praise. Kyro, Lovecanbuildabridge... You guys are next. You should be due about now. I'm available Saturday, Sunday if we must and then again on Tues. Just say when. It has been a long day (6 yards) and I'm just now getting to sit down.

When we work a holiday we do not get paid for it. We get Annual leave added to our account. We then use those hours to take vacation days at a later time. We NEVER get that as an extra amount of pay. Due to our schedule we average 3 hours of overtime every week. Now before you folks get all in a tizzy you have to understand the way fire works. We are hired in at a given wage that is set by a 40 hour work week. But since we work 56 hours / week they take that wage and convert it. When they do that, they take the overtime into account. There is some kind of law that makes them have to pay us ove

Calculus?!? {{{{{ runs away screaming like a little girl...}}}}} I finished Calc. I and II, started Differential equations (which I was taking as an elective   ) and decided that that math class was just a lil bit beyond my intelligence / willingness level at the time. I wish them much, much luck in the class. Actually Calc. I was really not that bad if I remember correctly. but it seemed like you had to have a really good grasp of Trigonometry to do well.

They are hoping that we will be able to handle it out of our "vacation schedule". In other words make us use a vacation day that we have already picked / scheduled and just not get paid for it. I can see the arguement being made that the county added these days, they can darn well add them in addition to our vacation days. Other than that, there is nothing else to do but shut down equipment. My estimates are that with the 5 days given now we will lose 2 engines / ladders or 4 ALS rescue units or a combination EVERY shift. That is provided they do not add further days and that our 5 days off

I just wanted to come back to this thought. Why is it that we have to have 2nd jobs? Remember police work 40 hours just like everyone else plus having to go to court. Fire fighters work 56 hour work weeks, I do believe that is more than the average worker. For that matter why does everyone expect us to have a 2nd job? If we are supposed to have a second job, then isn't everyone supposed to have a 2nd job to fall back on in case of hard times? And since we ALL are supposed to have 2nd jobs, then what the heck is everyone else out there biotching about? When they lost their primary job or had f

This is a case of the Tortise and the Hare. Government emloyees tend to be a conservative bunch like the tortise and would rather forgoe all the up front benefits that the private sector gets, like pay. We settle for less now in anticipation of greater rewards later. Private sector is the hare gettin much more pay up front and not as much from their employers in later life. BUT, they have had their entire careers to set aside and invest those extra earnings for their "lean times". So now it is the fault of those of us that did not get all that extra pay up front faults that you lost your job?
-
No, 1 week will not kill any of us financially. That is the proposal 1 WEEK of pay. Do not even begin to go down the road of side jobs. Let me just ask you this... Why are we working more than 1 job anyway? Hmmm. We have not had a raise in 4 years and have been contributing more each year to our benefits. Net result... WE ARE ALREADY MAKING LESS THAN 4 YEARS AGO. Now, couple that with the fact that these 5 days are JUST A STARTING POINT. How do you cut 10% from a budget that is already vastly made up of labor costs? ANSWER... YOU CUT PAY. Doooh. So now we will see either a straight pay cut a

I'm toying with the idea of designing a bright neon T-shirt for Cobb's public safety officers to wear on their furlough days. Something along the lines of: "I'm a Cobb Public Safety Officer who is not ALLOWED to work today. Do you feel safer?" We could wear them all over Cobb on our Furlough days. In front of Ott's home, the malls the parks while surfing the net at the library. What do you guys think?
-
  ohhh.... the irony. But we have heard a bit more news since yesterday morning. It appears that the 5 furlough days is just the starting point. It has been told to us that the additional mandatory 10% reduction in budget (especially for labor intensive areas like Public Safety), will likely ONLY be accomplished through ADDITIONAL furlough days. There is no more extra budget to cut so it will have to come from pay. For Fire they are looking at an additional $3 million. Each furlough day nets about $350,000 for us. You do the math. How many more days will we have to lose o

I'm still waiting for all of those who blamed Bush to actually own up and say it is PIBO's fault or admit they were wrong when they accused Bush of causing the High fuel prices.
-
We are not certain how the furlough days will work for fire just yet. Suffice it to say that 5 days for regular employees = 1 week or 40 hours. 1 week for fire = 56 hours. When you work 24 hour shifts, it works out to 2.3 shifts. Do we take 2 shifts and then 8 hours, 2 shifts or 3 shifts? They have not said yet. The chief was already by saying that we will likely try to use a scheduled annual leaave day and convert it to a furlough day. We have already had 1 guy "volunteer" to the chief to take his FD on a day where AL was no longer available. The problem that I see is that we have 5 months to

As far as I can tell, that is the case. In Cob you do not have to call, just abide by the burn regulations. It seems like Paulding wants you to call and "inform" them about your burn.
-
As bad as$5 / gal sounds, former member still wants it to be about $8/gal like Europe. The fact that we have no infrastructure to fall back on or that it would take years to establish doesn't bother her at all.
-
I know it is monday now but Cobb does not have a "Sunday" ban. You can burn up til May 1st. They follow the state EPA Guides. No permit is required for redidential burns. Paulding apparantly wants you to call in and get a permit. Also as of this morning they are denieng permits citing hazourdous conditions. I also soaw no "sunday" stipulation under Pauldings denial list.

I might... But SW might get a little upset.

Where is the leak? I just fixed my neighbors main inlet line. The shear forces from the dirt settling around his house cracked the copper pipe at the concrete wall.

 what does a bra have to do with stopping smoking?
-
Yep... I smoked a cigarette when I was about 13. Quit cold turkey after that and never looked back. Seriously. I'm glad that you want to get rid of the habit. It really is a nasty habit, it is bad for you and it's freakin expensive. My mother did quit cold turkey when she was in her 40's I think. She just said I'm not gonna do it again and never did. After years of me putting lines on her cigarettes( she wasn't supposed to smoke beyond that point) hiding spiders in the packs and cartons. Hiding the packs. The best thing about her smoking was that I always had "blocks " to make t

I have a different take on things. both of mine are skinny as can be and it concerns me. Both take medication for ADD/ADHD. The medications used are stimulants (crazy isn't it... but stimulants tend to help these kids focus). But now I worry about their later life. Now they can eat whatever they want. We feed them healthy foods but we can also let them eat sweets as well. his Drs actually requested us give him a milkshake everynight to help him build weight. He is just now getting into the 30th weight percentile for his age. I just hope they do not baloon up if they stop their medications.

I MIGHT be guilty of this one. It all depends on my truck. It's sooo much smarter than me. It knows when it is dark and when the sun is out and automatically changes from headlights to driving lights all on its own It even turns on the headlights when I enter a long tunnel or a very shady stretch of road. Anyway, seeing as it is so smart and it appears to me that it generaly gets quite dark during most rainy times, I guess i thought it just changed them for me. For some reason I just can't bring myself to get out and check though.

Rising Fuel prices are starting to affect the economy
nschur replied to nschur's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I was all over the effects of Ethanol in our cars. we even got a flex fuel vehicle. I just never stopped to consider th same could happen to small engines. OOPS. Well I now know and have begun to add it to my fuel during use and not just during storage. Sometimes you just have to pay the price that leads to knowledge. BTW, I have been using this guy for longer than I have been on PCOM. Sorry Subs. I just have not had an issue that led us to this conversation before. -
