"the cow"? Just from an outside observer that doesn't make me want to vote for your candidate over her. It sounds like there are plenty of things negative to say about her rather than calling her a co

I am voting for Braddock mainly because the majority of you here are against her.:ninja:

I am glad that is how you entrust the running of things in your life. I would maybe put some faith in the fact there are so many people in one place scared to have a person running their district their must be some merit to it.

I, personally, prefer "pig".

No disrespect to ya'll intended.

Disrespect to another fully intended.

Looking atrocious (fake red hair, ridiculous getups, overweight), absolutely does not impede upon someone's ability to lead, but unethical behavior that is glutinous and self-serving (especially receiving a salary through taxpayers while owing taxes) definitely characterizes someone as a pig in my book.

BossHog, really? Are you really gonna let this dumba$$ be so ignorant and post this kind of trash?? I am having a very SLOW day at the office and would love to call some of these bullies 'names'! Talk about biased....

I just got the latest political litter box liner out of my mail box. Could someone tell Tony Crowe how to spell "reservior" and "decision"? Also let him know using a period at the end of sentence is a good idea also.

I voted for Heidi Leggett for Post 1 commissioner. I heard about her on here and just had the opportunity to talk with her over the phone. I have to say I'm extremely impressed with her ideas. Not only is she very educated on what real conservatism is all about. She is a real person running for the people of this county, and not a government paid junket. She explained to me how we can cut back and give more incentives to smaller businesses for real job growth, cutting back on useless programs that waist taxpayer money, in the long run the only things that turn out real growth and capital. I just have a huge problem with electing someone who has already got their hands tangled in this rats nest of a system that we so desperately need to clean up. I'm delighted to have someone like Heidi running in my own district that strikes a chord with my small government beliefs and knows the principles by which they stand.

I also have talked with Heidi Leggett And was impressed with the amount of knowledge that she has about the needs of the County and the real down to earth desire to make Paulding County a better place to live work and play.

Heidi's opponent has served on the AIRPORT BOARD for the past eight years we all know the many problems that remain unresolved there.

I think Heidi Leggett will make Paulding County proud serving as the first woman on the Paulding County Board of Commissioners

I'm glad your impressed but unless things changed, You're still in Todd Pownall's county district. I personally think that Mr. Carmichael - a college grad, a military pilot and veteran, a retired pilot and even a college football player (and graduate of Vanderbilt) has an infinitely more impressive background.

I know that you believe that anyone who has anything to do with the airport is by definition not someone you would put on your list but to me that kind of knee jerk would be like some of these folks reacting negatively to someone just because they were a member of a union at one time in their life.

I'm sure Heidi's background in the restaurant and bar industry as well as real estate has given her some real people skills but I tend to look at the job and the analytical responsibilities doing that job well will entail. I'm sure she can make people feel comfortable and all, but I just don't see her contributing much to the pubic debate.

With the momentum that county is massing toward possibly the greatest period of economic development in its history, I'm hoping we can bring someone on board who has the ability to figure out what to do rather than a specialist in commiseration.

I'm sure both candidates are conservative, but I think what we really need and want is someone who is genuinely smart.

I agree. Like the wise ol' Albert Einsten said, you can't fix today's problems with the same kind of thinking that created them.

Since I am small business I am really interested in the incentives, and capitol.

Our local Government can't get much smaller, 70 is about the limit you can layoff and still provide essential services. Maybe we could combine 2 post and have one less commissioner.

Do you think Heidi can get more people in the county to spend their money with me? I am interested in her ideas on this.

A lifetime of indoctrination as to thee ways of big business and big government invasions and takeovers does not = smart. This is not a business, it's our home. This is not a war zone,, it's our home. Practical common sense and creativity = smart. That's what Heidi has!

I am very detail oriented, I want details of how she plans to accomplish this.

I am not being ugly, I am being practical. The running of this county is absolutely a business. I get paid for running a business, nobody pays me for existing, I am not on welfare.

You're right. I apologize for being a dumba$$, as you say.

It was a bit harsh.

But at the time, I thought I was doing well to refrain from using the words "trailer trash".

I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

I do have a special place in my heart to carefully look at anyone that has been appointed by Jerry Shearin to any position that has any significant impact on taxes or the well being of the citizens of Paulding County’

I talked with Heidi’s opponent (Mr. Carmichael) At length and to be quite frank I think that he did a piss poor job for the eight years that he served on the Airport Board Here are some of the reason that I feel this way.

First the Board decided to claim imminent domain to claim a citizen’s property at the entrance of hwy.278 just for the road to the airport,

Secondly Mr. Carmichael had to be a part of the big cover up REMEMBER the airport was not going to cost the Paulding County Tax Payers one cent, Where was he when the citizens were being lied to about that, He was serving on the board from the inception on the air port to this very moment.

Was he involved in the planning?? Then why was he not aware that we had no sewer to the area? Why was he aware that we did not have adequate water pressure to the area, And the only way to get it there is to build a water tower AT THE AIRPORT OH and By the way why was he not aware that we had no land to put the tower on and had to purchase two more acres of land just recently at a cost of thousands of dollars and a Million plus for the water tower, Oh are we also going to have to build a sewer plant???? I never have never got this answer maybe you can answer this. Why was tax payer money used to build a Terminal, I have been told that there will be no commercial passenger flights? I thought a terminal was for passengers to buy tickets check baggage etc. If this is the type person that made all these errors in judgment on as small of a project as the airport in which he is acclaimed to be a specialist in the field, Then I certainly do not want him having a part in running the entire county OH I almost forgot Have you heard anything about putting a restaurant in the new Terminal??? Ask Mr. Carmichael what he thinks about that?

Sorry Pubby you got the wrong horse in this race, While I think Mr. Carmichael is a very fine Gentleman, And a good person, I could never vote for him as a commissioner for Post 1 which I have been in for well over twelve years and have never been in Todd Pawnall’s District as you allege, good try but no cigar.

With Mr. Carmichael’s credentials I am sure he would make a good flight instructor, But based on the above I do not want him to have his hands on my tax dollars, Or a vote on the Board Of Commissioners.

Pubby shame on you for not being truthful in this thread and belittling a single mom for doing whatever had to be done to support and raise her kids you have really put your foot in your mouth on this one.

Heidi is a very fine level headed young lady with a lot of common sense who worked two jobs to raise her kids and to provide for their needs has also attend professional schools to become a real estate agent, Comes from a humble family and a lifelong resident of Paulding County, And will be dedicated to serving the best interest of Paulding County Post 1 And will vote her convictions. We do not need another yes person in Post 1

You know Whitey some of what you say might be true.

But let's be honest, you hate that airport, you want to see it fail and all the money invested in it go to waste.

You are supporting Heidi for 1 reason she agrees with you about the airport.

Politics is a business, running the county is just like running a business.

When the county is successful we are all successful, when anything in the county fails due to bad decisions we all fail.

Hopefully the airport will grow, thrive , become successful and be able to pay those folks out there millions for their land. After all that is the ultimate goal right?

I would think if the folks that are dissatisfied out there want to ever realize their dream of being paid the big bucks for their land they would back Mr.Carmicheal.

He has years of experience in the aviation business, along with many contacts.

He is well known in the community as a man that serves his community especially the disadvantaged. He is known for his high moral standards.

Why would his education and experience be held against him when running for a position to make important decisions for 1000's of people?

Heidi is a very nice lady, with a successful small business, she like the rest of us is dependent upon a healthy economy. You can't give small business anything to make them successful, you have to have a healthy local economy.

Perhaps pouring millions of taxpayers dollars into a few angry people around the airport will stimulate the local economy. Maybe they will use that to start up some big businesses and hire lots of people.

Lppt,

Yes I very much support local business here in Paulding and will do everything to help bring more and help existing business to grow and prosper.

The airport is here… that is a thing of the past. Did the people here vote it in? NO. We didn’t even have our basic infrastructure in place yet. We needed Water and roads and many other things before the airport. A well planned community is a successful community. None the less, the airport is here. At this point we have to try to get the horse back in front of the cart, figuratively speaking.

One of the many things the board of commissioners are involved in, are all the departments. This is what makes up our local government. I worked closely with all these departments for 13 years surveying and engineering. I helped some of the small town developers, I did the field work, I did the drafting, I did the plan and design, I did the court house work. When I turned in my plans, everything had to be done to the letter. Meanwhile, I watched the elitist walk right past me and get approved without even meeting the requirements. Yes, they went around the County employees and straight to our leaders. If you don’t believe me, talk to some of the residents that live in poorly built subdivisions. There is plenty…

I helped small time businesses get special use permits so they could open and run new business. I was trained to help them from start to finish, even representing them before the board of commissioners. I actually did the work for the commissioners to vote on. I’ve already been helping to bring business here.

I was involved when the county GIS were first learning GPS, and needed help. I worked with addressing, with the tax assessors. Probably the only department I am not familiar with is permitting.

Has my opponent done any of this? Does my opponent even know that the County GIS map we were currently given for Post 1 does not match the State Records?

How would I cut wasteful spending? One in particular that comes to mind would be some of these law suits against the County. The County incurred damages to someone’s property. The property owner sues for a settlement of something like $100,000 to compensate damages. The County has held this thing up in court so long, it has ended up costing the tax payers somewhere around 1.3 million dollars? Where is the logic there? Isn’t paying 100,000 for damages much cheaper than paying lawyers millions? Then in turn these lawyers pay huge campaign contributions to the commissioners that keep it going. Hum. Corruption at its best. I’m sure you know which case I’m referring to, but there are many like this one.

If anyone wants to talk to me, send me a pm and I will give you my phone number. :)

Whitey ... shame on me!!!!

I can't believe the alligator tears you just shed for that scion of wealth whose grand-daddy US Senator from where was it ... Texas, Ohio, Indiana ... can't remember who bought land for taxes throughout the nation back in the depression. Yep, he hired Buddy Darden - you know the Congressman who was unelected after Bob Barr posted a picture of him jogging with Bill Clinton - and came out with some concocted deal that he had a buyer for $100,000/acre for his 60 acres or some such. Yep, he was mightily upset when he drove back to Buckhead in his Maserati after losing the condemnation hearing and a got a measly $10,000 or so an acre for land his granddaddy paid 50 cents an acre for in 1936. It was everything that little Chevy 4-banger of mine could muster to catch him for an interview.... and such crocodile tears for the fact the jury saw that his asking price was pure hogwash.

As far as sewer and water and all that kind of jazz ... if you thought that there was any of that out on the west side of the county before then you are and were delusional.

But of all the wild and crazy things ... wouldn't you know it that Paulding is where the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains begin. The east side, along about Hiram, is pretty flat and not that much 'higher' than, say, Atlanta proper. (You know from right there where business 6 splits from US278 as you go down the hill into Hiram, you can on a clear day see the Atlanta skyline.) Anyway, go further west toward the airport and the lay of the land is generally higher. That is good news for sewer 'cause as I know you know, **it runs down hill.

As far as the investment in the terminal, I know you'll not likely see it in all its glory but the facility is built for Paulding 2030 ... the idea is that on public infrastructure, we need to remember that we do continue to project growth for the foreseeable future. The only terminal - and it was never supposed to be a passenger terminal for commercial flights - you'd have bought would be a 20 by 20 green metal building about like your garage. I know you feel that what we have is exceedingly excessive ... but in 2030, we'll be very glad to have it.

Let me see if I can put in a context maybe some folks will understand.

Remember the movie Rainman ... buying your line on the airport feels to me like you're upset because the county bought some fashion boxers when we should have bought undersized mighty whitey tighties from K-Mart.

The real point is this is economic development. I understand as a retiree from GM you're perspective on development is limited but what it is about is opportunity ... as great an opportunity as you shared as a GM worker when the public built highways ... and it was those highways that spurred car sales.... Do know if there were no roads; folks wouldn't buy cars and you'd never have had a job.

Two questions.

Crowe or Austin?

Braddock or Morrison?

It is amazing to me how much you and Commissioner Pownall think alike... It's almost like you two work together.

As for the legal suit against the County. We have all heard about this ongoing issue for years. The Appeals Court from what I understand sided with the County and thought the ruling by the local judge was laughable. Sounds to me like the county have the grounds 9as well as the obligation) to stay in the case. Based on what you wrote above, if you are elected, all I have to do is bring a suit against the county and I can count on your endorsment to quickly settle for $100,000 large... Sign me up!!

Heidi Leggett

My issues have never been as much with you, but with seeing someone I respect and like run into the ground because he is accomplished and educated.

He automatically becomes a bad guy?

There is more to this county than an airport. When the airport becomes the focus of an election it is simply ridiculous. The decision to build the airport is in the past, way in the past it's done.

The continued bringing it up as a present negative that needs to be addressed.

I am very interested in the specifics of how the airport is going to be handled by any candidates.

All of the people running have access to the county budget, you should have already looked at it and know what we are bringing in and what we are spending. You are going to have input on that budget and you are going to vote to pass it.

Not just about the airport. Taking all the funding from the airport is not going to cover all the lawsuits, your going to have to underfund a lot of things to settle all the lawsuits. Many of the projects are about balancing our tax base in the future. I am interested in your vision of the future Paulding are we going to continue to fund the necessary functions of the county by going to the home owners and small business year after year? I hear the same things brought up year after that the last BOC burdened the tax payer with. Like it or not those things have got to be funded, you will have to balance the budget and fund those things.

You will be the one voting whether or not to raise taxes on the people of this county to do the things you say you are going to do. You will pay on the bonds already issued, then find the money to do the rest of the things you feel are right.

If the airport never makes enough to pay it's own way, we will still be on the hook to pay what we owe. And never see a dime back on it. The airport is a county business and should be run like one, not the emotional morass that comes up every election cycle.

LPPT

Both you and Pubby know me personally and for you to post such a statement that I would like for the airport to fail is really beyond me.

Neither of you have ever heard me utter from my mouth or type in any post such a statement, and never will.

Do I want the airport to become the second airport for Atlanta... Hell no, I would fight that tooth and nail and go to my grave opposing any expansion of the existing airport into a commercial driven endeavor with the taking off and landing of hundreds of planes a day.

You do know that Post 1 lies in the flight path of the majority of Post 1 district and that would become a major disruption for the residents who live in that district.

You stated

"Hopefully the airport will grow, thrive, become successful and be able to pay those folks out there millions for their land. After all that is the ultimate goal right?"

If I thought that was the ultimate goal then yes I would be opposed to the airport and the pouring in of millions more tax dollars to make it successful. You do know that the city of Atlanta owns thousands of acres of land that surround the airport don't you. And they would be the ones that would prosper the most

Of course if I lived in the Burnt Hickory area then I would be all for the expansion in the other part of the county, you will never be affected by the grand scheme of things to come.

Granted Mr. Carmichael brings a great deal of expertise to the table in the area of Aviation, Coupled with the fact that he readily was willing to use imminent domain to acquire land for the airport and the many errors in judgment in building the airport that has now cost the Taxpayers of Paulding County Millions of dollars, Is the very reason that I VOTED FOR and I am supporting Heidi Leggett for post 1 commissioner. We had a yes man for the past eight years in Post 1 Time to elect someone with some good ordinary common sense to represent us at the Board of Commissioners meeting.

Maybe after the election is over we can sit down at the new restaurant at the airport, Have a couple of drinks in the pilots lounge that is being proposed and enjoy a Swafford burger topped with some Carmichael fries all financed by the Paulding County Taxpayers

Whitey ... shame on me!!!!

Real nice post, but I fail to tie it in to this race for post one commissioner.

Just for your information there already is sewer less than a half mile from the airport at the Vista Lake sub division just to name one provided by the City of Dallas RIGHT!!!! And I see no need for an additional waste water treatment facility at this time.

The foresight that you acclaim to Mr. Carmichael was not used in the planning of the airport, the airport board decided to use a septic system instead knowing full well that a new waste treatment facility was already designed in the western part of the county to service the airport and allow for the 30,000 proposed new homes for the area.

I know that I am senile but I do recall the referendum on the GREENSPACE that surrounds the airport and the thousands of dollars spent by the special interest groups to ram that through.

And yes s*** does run down hill, Right down Raccoon creek from the airport into the creek and streams from the highest point in the county, Right through the most beautiful part of our county that was supposed to be maintained for our children and grand children as green space.

Now if I was aware of this some six years ago, do you think that someone serving on the Airport Board alongside Jerry Shearin like Mr. Carmichael was would be aware of the same thing, given all his expertise in the aviation field? And the education that he received from Vanderbilt?

I am willing to bet you a Swafford Burger topped with the soon to be famous Carmichael fries to be served from the proposed new restaurant at the Atlanta West terminal building located four miles west of Dallas Georgia on hwy 278 that he knew of all the under the table deals that was being proposed by the previous administration and chose to be silent and go along with the good ole boys until it was obvious that tax dollars would have to be spent just to make it operational. Hell at the ground breaking of the airport we did not have a method to even refuel an incoming plane.

I do not want someone with this type education to sit on the Board of Commissioners voting to dispense my tax dollars

OH ..... Almost forgot while we are eating the Swafford Burger and the soon to be world famous Carmichael fries we can also have a drink in the proposed Pilots lounge

Vista lake is further than a half-mile from the airport.

The plans for pushing the sewer out that direction are based on economic development imperatives of commercial and industrial space on and about the airport. Your suggestion of a 30,000 home subdivision is an apparition or maybe better yet, a full blown delusion. Wouldn't happen, not going to happen. Yes the land around the airport is public land and is being developed as park, game reserve, forest preserve land ... .

So, I'm not at all surprised that Mr. Carmichael is unaware of a 30,000 home PRD ... Why would he be; it's bunk. (You might revisit your source on the matter and maybe question more of what kind of crap you were being fed at the time.)

As far as waste water treatment for this sewer system, my understanding is that the city of Dallas actually does have a contract for extending its sewerage system to the airport area and there is no other waste water treatment facility in the works. I'm not sure but I think grants are at least applied for, for this extension.

Now as far as grand schemes and the like that may have come from the Shearin administration, some may have been true and some no doubt were conjecture of his numerous opponents. The sad thing about that administration is that even the unbelievable things may have been believed because some of the unbelievable things that did happen.

But if I were you, I wouldn't assume that everyone on the horizon was complicit in some conspiracy if for no other reason, people should be presumed innocent.

Pubby I agree the 30,000 home communities do sound like a fairy tale in this economic climate. But it is a fact hell asks Glen Richardson he was speaker of the House, when the measure was passed.

Fact is it was posted right here on Paulding.com when it was discovered that the General Assembly passed the law.

The law provides for a community of several different complexes which included a business park, Homes, Retail etc. All self contained that would provide their own utilities and also would collect the taxes and some developement cost up front. All this was in the Goldmine lake Airport area.

This law was passed shortly after the construction of the airport began.

Secrets have a way of being exposed and this project was exposed right here on P.com

Sorry Pubby no bunk here just some facts of what everyone tried to keep secret that had anything to do with the airport.

Just for my information is there any way to do a search on p.com beyond the two years that seems to be the cut off?

Okay... I presume that Carmichael had no knowledge of any of the events surrounding the airport. Then that begs this question what did he do for the eight years that he has served on the Airport Board? Was he serving as just a yes man?

JSYK the surveying is being done right now to connect to the sewerage

I may have totally missed that thing ... I recall some aspects of it but you're saying the General assembly passed this?

Maybe I'm loosing it.

there is a way to search the board older than two years ago. Go to the advanced search. There you can specify a key word and then specify a starting and ending date.

I would guess the search word would be goldmine and the date line would be Jan. 1, 2005 through Dec. 30, 2007

I'll go look.

But are you sure that what you're talking about doesn't have something to do with the tunnels?

The only reference to residential in the bunch of posts was a remark from Cherokee woman that if they put sewerage up there, the homebuilders would come and run over the place.

You'll also note that I missed the groundbreaking.

I'll extend the search through 2008, though and report back.

Whitey-

If this is what you are referring to? There was certainly not 30,000 houses planned in this development, probably a couple of thoudand at best. This won a national EDA award back in 2007.. I have not heard if this plan has been scrapped or is pending dependent upon what the City of Atlanta decides to do with this property, still it technically still is contention (2nd from bottom I believe of 5 or so sites) for a site commercial airport.

Where'd ya go Heidi Jo? I would like to know who yo are supporting in the two races. Crowe or Austin and Braddock or Morrison?

That will help people get to know you better than a two hour conversation.

I found it, from a lead in a March 2008 post.

I also missed the reason for the technology park project. I think Shearin, in explaining it to me, said it had to do with the fiber-optic line that was run up and down the silver comet trail and around to some of the schools. For the life of me, I never associated it with the subject in this topic.

I noted that the general concept presented there and in the "Paulding Post"... the county 'magazine' that Jerry paid Chris Barker and some other reporters (not me) to write was the source. There appeared to be some confusion on that, though, as Paulettes "Pulse of Paulding" monthly magazine was also a suspect.

I think you can tell from the discussion cited that no one took the project very seriously (except you Whitey ;) ... you talked about the 25000 people that were supposed to be part of some kind of technology park in a few locations.)

Anyway, the law establishing the technology authority apparently was the key bit and while that became law in the summer of 2008, the reality is that the financial markets were already shaky at the point and Jerry lost the in mid July, within a couple of weeks of when he would have been able to start appointments. Then, of course, the financial crash came along two or three months later sealing the fate of this fantasy.

I will note a few more things. Jerry did talk about the "commerce department award" for the plan but never really emphasized the plan in, say, his state of the county address that year. And, I suspect that was largely because the small airport was already a big thorn in his side and promoting this plan would have opened the door to even more criticism.

In anycase, the plans for that project, including any shenanigans, were targeted for this new 'technology' board which was never appointed. The Paulding Technology and facilities board remains dormant.

I think this is more akin to plans the US government might have for the armed takeover of Mexico. I'm sure you'd find them somewhere in some archive and you'd find they'd been taken out and dusted off a few times over the years ... but after a brief review ... they were hastily put right back on the shelf until the next person who didn't know any better took them down.

To me, that marketing plan was a 95 percent pie in the sky and sucking up to federal 'funders.'
