Yes, mine, too - His shows seem more authentic. Of course he's doing what people have done for thousands of years - live off the land in man-made shelters, cooking over an open flame. He plays a pretty good harmonica, too!

I watch the survival shows. Not "survivor", the reality show, but the one where people are left in the woods or on a desert island to make it for a week or so. They have to build their own shelters and hunt/trap/catch their own food. The one that I like the least in that genre is Bear Grylls. While he purports to be teaching people what to do in a survival situation, he takes chances that a regular guy would never take. And he wouldn't even take them if he didn't have a full complement of support staff to make sure that he doesn't get hurt when he performs those stunts. What is remarka

Still not a good idea, IMO. What you're describing is "self-medicating" If it is ineffective, the person is more depressed. If it is effective, the person may make self-medicating his first choice as a way of dealing with problems. Assuming that health problems are already an issue, this could cause a further downward spiral. I knew that you were kidding about your suggestion. But the issue was one where "The Governor" should have stepped in, IMO.

I think that those gentlemen do not have M.D. next to their names! And don't say MD 20/20 - that's not a name! I kid around lots, but a serious question deserves a serious answer. I'm pretty sure that you don't treat depression with depressants.

Audits Of The Moral Health Of A Corporation

Pie in the sky. It sounds good, but it's BS in practice. I worked for such a company years ago. The ethics policies were a joke, in reality. They were designed to make the company look like they cared about the difference between right and wrong. But they were a business, in this case a public company that by definition, cared about the bottom dollar and its shareholders. There's nothing wrong with that, but any "ethics commission", inhouse , is in place to keep people from going to the feds or the media first. A person in a public company who makes an ethics complaint? He/she gets shown -

Okay, when you said that the people rescued from concentration camps all had the same build because of their ethnicity, what ethnicity were you talking about? Keep in mind that the commonality WAS religion. This is why I'm having a little bit of trouble following you. I'm also having difficulty with your definitions. Sometimes you refer to a person's "build" as his musculature. Other times, like the reference above - you talk about "build" being skeletal. You use the word "frame" to mean the same thing as "build". I agree that a person cannot change his bone structure! That's why the same Broo -

I'm saying that the bones of one person six feet tall and the bones of another person six feet tall will be about the same length, yes. The bones of one person six feet tall and the bones of another person six feet tall will be about the same circumference, matching same-to-same. The weight of the bones is not at issue here, because we're not talking about bone weight. Bone density could be a factor in bone weight, but that's not an issue in the discussion of the size of the bones of larger people. One of those six-footers could have weighed 200 lbs and the other could have weighed 160 -

The last one first - You're saying that people of the same ethnic groups all have similar "builds" to other people in that ethnic group? Surely, you aren't indicating that all of these millions of jewish people all had the same build!! Pull up any of the old pictures of the concentration camps. There are some really tall people, really short ones and some in between. It's your contention that they all had the same "build" because they belonged to the same ethnic group and that none of them was "big-boned" (as you defined it) going into the concentration camp? I just want to make sure that I'm -

I think that you meant "irrelevant", but I get what you're saying. But you're mssing a couple of key points. First S&D's was saying that among all body types, there are big boned people. Also, we're not talking about the length of bones, because that would make the person taller or shorter. Nor is she talking about the density or the weight of bones (I'm guessing that you haven't read the prior posts). She's saying that the SIZE of the bones, the circumference, is greater and THAT (according to her) larger bone circumference is what contributes to a "large frame" - because the person is " -

If the examples that you supplied were notyour [ observations, definitions or suppositions. Sorry. "] then whose were they? The definition of endomorphic that you provided means a person with a big gut (digestive viscera are massive) and the body build (the so-called, "soft tissue") is rounded and soft. That's exactly what I'm saying. Of course the WHO guidelines are general and there are some people whose adipose tissue is not evenly distributed (i.e. "pear-shaped"). That does not mean that the underlying skeletal structure is shaped like a pear, though. You're still talking about t -

There ARE clinical definitions of obesity. While I understand that your definitions work for you, the World Health Organization sets the following standards: Obese = over 30 percent BMI (Body Mass Index) After that: Any BMI ≥ 35 or 40 is severe obesity
A BMI of ≥ 35 or 40–44.9 or 49.9 is morbid obesity
A BMI of ≥ 45 or 50 is super obesity I think that your personal definitions are suppositions that are not based in science nor are they held in the medical community. I'm willing to amend that point of view if there's sufficient evidence to the contrary. "Havin -

GGGM - I think that people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what "health" is. It's not JUST where a person is, it's where he's going. The cumulative effects of not only obesity, but even carrying extra weight, show themselves down the road, in terms of joint damage, loss of flexibility, and most notably, the extra work on the heart to pump blood to a greater area (high blood pressure). Additionally, there is statistical evidence of a link between exogenous obesity and certain types of cancer. One of the worst things that a parent, teacher, or doctor could do is to give a -

You're using the terms "big boned" and "large framed" interchangeably. A person with a larger frame doesn't have bones that are noticeably bigger around. That person has more, and thicker connective tissue (tendons and ligaments which adds bulk. While one person's bones may vary to a degree in size and density from the next person, the difference is so minimal as to not be remarkable. In starvation mode, when the body cannibalizes itself (as in concentration camps or extreme anorexia) there are no people built like linebackers. How could that be so, if they were "big-boned"? Certainly people -

In all of these stories, there's an element of truth. Some people are certainly destined to be endomorphs, but it's time to put away the myth of being "big-boned". There's no such thing. There are pictures of people rescued from concentration camps during WWII. Among those many pictures, you'll not see a single "big-boned" individual. While the bones of taller people are longer, bones of people with larger girth are not bigger around. For the most part, obesity is caused by over-eating for the amount and kind of exercise that individual gets. People needn't fear of the day when the -

Need suggestions on some good books on the Civil War
eym_sirius replied to bvrat5199's topic in RECENT TOPICS
A must-read for this area is "Atlanta and Environs" by Franklin Garrett. Of course the work spans the entire history of the city and not just the civil war period, but the accounts of people and places can't be found anywhere else as in this complete work. The accounts of the civil war are quite interesting. -
