  1. I think that the judge's website has a "contact me" page. Maybe people should start inquiring on the status of the case, to make sure that it was settled according to the order of the court. In the interest of justice, you know.....
  2. Why do you feel the need to apologize for an in-depth discussion of something? Considering issues like -- proper parenting skills -- are appropriate things to talk about. "Taking it to this level" may be uncomfortable for you. If that's so, then maybe some self-discovery is in order? A full discussion of opinions should not be something that you feel the need to avoid. And that was my message to the OP - fully discuss the matter. It's what thinking people do.
  3. I have no problem with tats or piercings, or dyed hair -- on adults. But on 14 year olds? And what message -- and to whom -- is being sent out by the 14 year old through this choice? I happen to agree with the person who said that the 14 year old is attempting to show independence from authority, the parents in this case. If I were THIS parent, I would allow a child to make his case for piercing. I can't see any set of circumstances under which a 14 year old could make a compelling argument. The "showing independence" thing? That would be a lie, since such independence doesn't exist. The k
  4. You can say all you want what society should and shouldn't do, but if you think that your ideal has any basis or bearing on the way that things really work, you're in denial. Furthermore, you seem to completely overlook the parental responsibility of guidance. IMO there's no more important guidance that a parent can give his child than helping him make the right choices - that includes friends. You may SAY that everyone shouldn't be judged by appearances. Appearances are a sort of message. A child that wears all black dyes his hair black and has death-oriented jewelry? My child would just
  5. I didn't even know pins had 'em!
  6. -- As opposed to "biscuit bream" which are so small that they'd fit, whole, on a biscuit. In either case, titty or biscuit, you have to hold the bream pointing away so that you don't get peed on!
  7. I completely disagree. Do you think that the reason that they do what they do is in any way related to people mentioning their weirdness on PCOM? Do you think that they would stop if people stopped reporting about what they do? I appreciate people keeping me updated on just how inhuman these Westboro Baptist folks are! I think people need to be informed and reminded about the crazies in our society.
  8. I wonder about why that matters, too! A person has two ears, why would it matter which ear had a hole poked in it?
  9. I wouldn't begin to imply that a person who gets a tat or an earring is prison bound or that he couldn't get a job. I will say that there are some professional jobs that you wouldn't get if you had a tat on your face or arm that was visible. But sure, the military is not going to turn people down. They pretty much don't turn anyone down, though, who is young and healthy. My point about an earring or a tat being limiting had to do with a person who might want their child to have high aspirations. Here's an example - Do you think that if President Obama had tats and an earring, would he have
  10. Yes, pretty much when a company goes public, it sells its soul to the highest bidder. And that was the case with R.J. Reynolds, who was desperately attempting to gain back market share against the rising star, Phillip Morris. PM did their share of damage with their depiction of "The Marlboro Man", while not aimed directly at kids, it was certainly targeted at young men who were looking for a strong male identity. Not sure if that's the same thing, or not.... Here's something that not everyone knows -- Did you know that the "Marlboro Man" cigarette was originally marketed as a woman's brand
  11. It's not a battle if the child respects his parents. Parents should be parents, not peers. You stated that a youngster was trying to display "independence". This is a false display, in the first place, because the youngster is not in fact, "independent". And exactly for whom is this display of independence being made, at 14 years old? He's not even old enough to drive! Society says that he's not independent. I can't think of a compelling reason for a 14 year old to be allowed to make any permanent change in his body. But, as I said before -- I'm willing to listen to reason. Why don't you
  12. Your child depends on you to exercise the wisdom of your years.
  13. This should be where you send your email to: hous-qaexw-2469890229@craigslist.org
  14. I think that, not knowing the child, you're suggestion is illogical. Children also test boundaries and if an earring is okay, then so may tats. If my child was making choices, expressing a desire for things that would be self-limiting (like a tat that would show at a job interview), then it might be time to take a close look at the people that the child is hanging around. Khakis or blue jeans -- that's a "style choice". Getting a hole put in the ear of a 14 year old -- that's just something that needs to be articulated by the youngster. If he's doing it to show his friends that he's the on
  15. This issue was presented to me several years ago. "Convince me that this is the proper thing to do", I said. "Well, it's a way of showing my individuality", he said. "You're going to show individuality by doing the same thing that millions of other young people are presently doing. And this is going to be the way that you distinguish yourself - by doing the same thing?" "I see your point", he said. "Try to distinguish yourself with your unique gifts and through your character, not something as superficial as getting your ear pierced." That's the way the conve
  16. Can you provide the link to the ad that you're talking about?
  17. Believe it. I was in the industry at the time that Joe Camel was conceived. Subliminal sexual suggestion was all the rage. Until J.C. came along, there was an unwritten rule among tobacco companies that pitching to kids was taboo. The R. J. Reynolds ad was revolutionary, because it went all the way up to the line without overtly stepping over it and showing a cool kid smoking. So it shows a "smooth character" that the adolescent mind doesn't compute as looking like a peckernbaws.
  18. Joe Camel was a sexually subliminal advertisement, aimed at young people. Okay, maybe overtly sexual, instead of subliminal or merely suggested. The cartoon character doesn't really look that much like a camel, resembling "meat and two veggies" more. The ads from R.J. Reynolds doubled up on the sexual imagery by having "Joe Camel" dangle a cigarette from his lips (typically extendinng at a 45 degree angle to maximize the sexual suggestion) .
  19. They ought to still be bedding then - The full moon is on the 15th, I think....
  20. If you fillet them, it takes just a few seconds. No scaling or gutting. The only time I "clean" fish is if I'm going to cook them on the grill. Flounder (fresh) are excellent that way! I agree about the pain in the ass thing. Except for preparing fish for the grill, I haven't "cleaned" fish in twenty years. At WOP, I think that it is catch and release only.
  21. See if Subby or Kendall (at Subby's shop) can do any good with it.
  22. The least likely critter is the yellow jacket for nesting in a wall. It is most likely wasps, but it could be hornets if it's for sure not honey bees. Honey bees are light brown while the others are more yellowish. Here's a link for determining which it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characteristics_of_common_wasps_and_bees
  23. It's about Jungle Juice being a terrible thing. IMO, straight or barely dilured pure alcohol should never be consumed. That's because it takes several minutes for the alcohol to make its way to the liver, where it is processed by the body. In that time, a person can drink enough "Jungle Juice" (or other strong drink) to kill them or to otherwise be dangerous to their person. While teenagers(who shouldn't be drinking anyway) are certainly at risk, the warning about high alcohol content drinks should be heeded by everyone. I don't propose any additional laws - what's the point if drinkin
  24. Let's remember that it is CONGRESS that sets the budget. The President can veto any bill passed by Congress, but Congress can override any veto. Both Houses of Congress need to reclaim the powers afforded them by the Constitution by doing THEIR JOBS! It's only when they abdicate their responsibilities that the President takes over and gets to exert his choice of programs. If voting FOR the space program might bring criticism, Congress runs from making that decision, happy to let the White House take the heat.
