  1. They are called "euphemisms". The word, "euphemism" literally means "good-speaking". The words are meant to be less offensive to the hearer/receiver as to be less troubling than the more accurate, harsher expression. In this case, "sampling" is the euphemism for "stealing". If the teller were to use the more troubling word, he/she would have to come to terms with the moral issue at hand - taking something that doesn't belong to him/her. A person goes into the back yard of a man with an apple tree and helps himself to all the apples he can eat. The owner of the tree does not know that
  2. Hmmm - I'm not sure that instructing a psychopath to "go with his heart" is that good of an idea. It's difficult to imagine a person who is so delusional as to think that his every desire is inherently superior to everything and everybody in society. We know that we hurt, so we avoid hurting others. A psychopath has no such regard for others, only himself. A person would certainly question his interpretation if he were of sound mind. Remember the sociopathic killer, David Berkowitz? He was getting instructions to kill by demons who spoke through his neighbor's dog. Well sure, you an
  3. Nobody appreciates a store tricking them by making the produce appear ripe when it is not. It seems that the proper thing to do would be to purchase the bag of grapes, "sample" your own purchase and then return them before you leave the store (if you don't mind eating unwashed fruit) if they are unacceptable. What happens at the end of the day, probably, is that the store just rebags the grapes and the sequence repeats itself until the grapes are sold to an unsuspecting customer who doesn't know that 20 people have touched his grapes with unwashed hands (how that for "being tricked into purch
  4. In the South! I'd caution people against putting their personal information like this out there. One of the typical questions that banks (for instance) ask to determine your identity is "where were you born?". For instance, a person could respond, "I was born in Dallas, TX at Parkland Hospital the day the President Kennedy was shot". That gives strangers way too much information. You all know that information that is not in the private forums goes out on the internet, right?
  5. Stores price everything for shrinkage (loss from theft). When a grocery store wants you to sample before purchasing, they'll set a display up with samples that say, "free, take one!" They price apples similarly. Does that mean that a person gets to take a bite out of an apple before he buys a bag of them? Is the standard "Is this right?" or is it, "Is the store losing money?" And that's only half of the equation, the other half being the nastiness of eating, without washing, what dozens of people have handled. To LPPT's point, it's not just "will this make you sick?", because
  6. So in your book a guy who sets off a bomb and then goes and murders dozens of teenagers is "extreme"??? If he does this, has a 1500 page manifesto in which he claims to be the champion of europe and has the goal of eradicating the muslims in Europe -- trust me -- he has a mental disorder. Not legally insane but he's delusional (i.e. the catholic church isn't going to canonize him) sociopathic (no feeling for others) and paranoid (thinks that muslims are out to get Norwegians). So hell yeah, the guy's a wacko and you don't have to have a clinical practice to make that determination. If you w
  7. Is that what they call "stealing"? It just seemed to be out of control at Wal-Mart to the point that it was noticeable that grapes were missing out of each of the hundred baggies of grapes. It looked like probably a dozen or more people had dipped their hands into each bag!! I don't see the difference between this and opening up a bag of chips and "sampling" some of them. Except that you can wash off grapes, I guess. Chips - not so much.
  8. I went to get cupboard stuff. I had seen the open grape baggies before and I knew that people were just being nasty. I was in line for about 10 minutes, because you know that they only have about 4 lines open in the whole place..... Oh - I did get frozen SWAI. I got it there before and it was excellent!
  9. What struck me was the fact that ALL of the little baggies of grapes had been opened and you could see how people had just reached their hands in there. I don't eat cherries (?) but they do have pits, right? I'm wondering what people did with the pits? Probably tossed em into tne mounds of other produce..... They'd do a walk-by and the hand would grab up a few. They tried to be subtle about it, and they'd walk off a bit before putting their hand up to their mouth. I know it's stealing! They're stealing, not just from the store but from the next unsuspecting customer whose produce pur
  10. I guess they didn't read his "manifesto". But like I was saying to Pubby - A good way to tell that a guy is a nutjob - He has a 1500 page manifesto. I don't know of anybody who had one who WASN'T a nutjob!!
  11. I'll have on my PCOM T-Shirt! But you know me already.... But you can still wear yours!! You Do have a PCOM T-Shirt, right???
  12. The cupboard was bare, so last night I went out to the Wal-Mart to grocery shop. There were people there sampling cherries and grapes from the open bags. No washing the fruit and -- no telling how many other hands have been in those bags and no telling where those hands have been!!!! Ewwww!! Needless to say, I avoided the produce section!!
  13. The odds are that they are not going to let the country go into default. As I said, that could bring about a ten point swing - even more, as short-sellers are covering their positions. The problem about Monday is that if there's a passing vote, signed by the Prez - it's going to be an 11th hour (get ready to hear that expression ad nauseum) deal, way after the markets have closed. I have all my money presently tied up in currency. I hope that after this is over there will be an investigation done regarding the short positions of Congressmen and when they covered their shorts. It would be s
  14. While I can't imagine Congress not making concessions for the good of the country - I think that they are too unreliable to take the chance. If they let the debt ceiling thing lapse and we go into default, the world's financial markets everywhere could hit the crapper. So if the Harry Reid plan goes through - Jump in. There could be a 8 - 10 percent spike on the news as stocks move off of their lows. If you're a gambler, you can pick up an easy 5 percent in one day - maybe 10! But if they default, you're screwed!!
  15. The informational part - nothing wrong with that - Letting people know that all of the break-ins were cars unlocked. The high sheriff should have left it there for people to draw the logical conclusion. Continuing to make his point made it seem like he was blaming the owners who have every right in the world to expect others to respect their property rights under the law. It's no biggie, though - everyone misspeaks! I've been known to carry on for too long from time to time..... Oh yeah - characterizing 18 to 21 year olds as "boys"??? They are men, according to the law - a fact that th
  16. How did the topic change to a discussion of Americans in foreign countries? This is about an american awol soldier, arrested for buying 6 pounds of black powder to make a bomb. Here - in the USA! Today, at his arraignment, he yelled out the name of the Ft. Hood killer. He had been claiming that he was a conscientious objector - That's a little difficult to swallow, given his histrionics today and the fact that he was buying ammo and bomb stuff.
  17. I thought the same thing when I read that. It never sounds very good when the victims get blamed.
  18. They don't advertise and promote this thing very well. I tried to contact the person in charge to get additional information and the email got kicked back.
  19. Okay, let's walk through this, because some of you are apparently unable to conceptualize issues. You have an executive, married, with kids going to Ivy League schools. He's making a million a year, salary. He has some great accountants, so he's able to pay just 10 percent in taxes, due to loopholes and tax discounts created for high earners. What you're telling me, is that instead of paying taxes at a rate comparable to everyone else -- you'd rather that you and I pick up his slack. And you're also suggesting that this same guy, whose family is dependent on him to keep this lifestyle t
  20. It was probably a sting operation on "peeping toms". Since the windows were tinted, I'm guessing that when you said the "back" of the truck, you're talking about the truck "bed"? Maybe they were just field-testing it? Why didn't you just meet "the wife" either at home or where you were going to go out to eat? It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to drive two vehicles to a neutral location and then to another place, assuming that the two of you live together. What you were doing seems to make less sense than whatever it was that they were doing. Consider that the temps have b
  21. And how long were you watching them? Long enough to determine their approximate ages..... I don't think that it means that they were people fooling around on somebody else. I think that it means that they were too cheap to get a room!!! Or that they REALLY hit it off at the Stars and Strikes!!!
  22. You do know that when oil wells are drilled in/around the USA, the USA doesn't get that oil, right? We have bills that have already been rung up at the register. These must be paid and it is idiotic to think that these bills already rung up can be paid by cutting FUTURE spending. Your wife has charged, like Newt's wife - half a million bucks at the jewelry store. Or, if you prefer, Victoria's Secret. Or both! You can't go to her and say, "now honey, we're going to have to pay those bills by not charging anything anymore". You have to pull in money from somewhere to pay those existing bill
