Sounds like a Jumping Spider, they're a form of spider that hunts for prey instead of building a web, a form of wolf spider. They're harmless. Black Widows are web spiders and like dark places to build they're webs, not usually found in the open. Brown Recluses are also a type of "wolf" spider, also preferes dark, dank area to hunt in. Not one you'd often find out in the open also... Google Jumping Spiders and see if you don't see your little monster...

I've come across this situation before, except the parents were getting ready to go to work that night. Both parents worked from 8:00pm till 5:00am and had to leave their 8 year old and 5 year old alone all night. They basically put them to bed and then went to work. Neither had a high school diploma, so the income choices were limited, these were the best jobs they could get. And no grandparents or friends to watch the kids on a regular basis.
