I don't think anyone ever said life in the Soviet Union was good. I also don't think McCarthyism is a great way to live either.

You still are on the premise that socialism is a component of communism and that just is not so. Communism is an extreme form of socialism in an extremely large array of forms of socialism, just like the economy of the US is a form of socialism. You keep trying to use the pure economic version of socialism to mean all socialist nations and that is just not so. There are as many degrees of socialism as there are nations and that is what the macro summary was about. Never mind answering because there is no talking to someone who thinks they know it all. You're giving links to prove your argument

You said that socialist countries usually become communist and I am challenging that statement. You said socialist countries don't survive long-term and I believe that is wrong, too, because you can't give any examples of that. You asked for examples of socialist countries that have survived and that list is long because the only countries that aren't socialist are those that are communist like Cuba or China or Vietnam, or those capitalist countries that are in complete disarray like Afghanistan. The USA is a socialist country because we have public utilities and police forces, a publi

I believe Lenin was a Communist, not a socialist.
-
Can you provide some examples of countries that were socialist and are now communist? I wouldn't say Venezula is socialist but run by a corrupt band of theives. When you say that socialism has NEVER survived long-term anywhere in the world, can you give some examples of that other than Venezula since that is an example of what corruption can do not socialism, and any system can fall to corruption.

I don't pretend to know much about the history of this, but I do know that socialism and communism are not the same. The article is saying that socialism is like a stepping stone to communism and that all socialist systems are oppressive. We all know that's not true. It also suggests that capitalism doesn't do these things and we all know that is not true either. Here's a really interesting take by a thoughtful leftist a friend linked to fb: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/10/mike-davis-late-victorian-holocausts-famine-mao-stalin?fbclid=IwAR2bfsSnDBNb3Oeh89QoepbHXMp0DwnHNxj607CczegEoFTULPVFSv

It's called not tolerating racism.

These kids marched because they don't accept that the second amendment is so absolute that it should be easy for a gun to be used in killing people. If there is no common sense compromise, they will go for the repeal of the second amendment and just use laws to decide all of it instead of it being a right. My generation and these kids will make changes with or without you.
-
You are wrong. It is your opinion that doesn't matter at all. These kids will be the majority voting group very soon. In only 12 years, the Millennials and the Post Millennials will be the majority because you age group is dying off. Your opinion matters not one bit to them. They will never convince you. They will convince others in that age group. You are entirely irrelevant and what you say is just background noise. They will be making the decisions in a very short time and their opinion today will be what they implement in a few years. You are irrelevant.
-
Yes, it is the school's job to teach about involvement in the national discussion. The current voice and ideas of the older and radical far right holds the sway for now, but my generation and these kids know that you are irrelevant. We don't have to change your mind. We only need to outlive you and we will make the changes while ignoring those outdated ideas. There is an amendment process to the Constitution for a reason. We don't need to engage you in the discussion at all. We will make our voices heard and push for change and just wait until you are something we can just ignore.

It's a sad day when adults don't see that there is a national problem with guns because they are intentionally trying to sow seeds of governmental distrust to advance their own agenda. It is time to take a serious look at the problem with guns. These kids will never change the minds of those on the far right, but they don't have to. These kids only need to outlive them. In twenty years, these kids will be the power brokers and those on the far right will be has-been minority. The world is changing whether you want it to or not. Proud of these kids.

I do record this one and watch it. Like this one very much.

All students use the field house, not just the football players.

Mental health issues are nothing to trifle with. This is so like the officer in TX who began shooting at the military base a few years ago. So sad.

Mom usually prepares a Christmas Eve dinner that is large enough to feed an army so whatever she has is what we will have. One year she fixed chili but usually it is a traditional meal. I won't know until I get there!

My boyfriend and I have been dating for long while now and I wanted to treat him to a nice dinner - kinda a holiday and a dating celebration. This is his Christmas gift from me so I'm looking for something nice. Any type of food. I don't want a $300 dinner but I do want nice. Suggestions?

Really interesting! Thank you for the article! This will fit into a unit I'm doing on ecology. So you're saving not to save the planet based on your political agenda? I'm not being a smart alec but isn't that what it comes down to? China and India have a longer way to go than we did and that just means we all have to keep working on it or we'll be extinct. That is not an option.

I love cats so I hate to hear this. You did what you could.

With all due respect, isn't that what sin taxes do? Does the government do the same with tax deductions to reward charitable giving? This is about what we know to be one of the most serious issues affecting human life here, and those taxes are the only way the offenders understand that there is a reason to make the change. Saving the planet is a worthwhile goal.
-
Carbon tax is just one of the ways the issue is being addressed to force compliance. There are other means. You're assertion about the global cooling is not what the majority of the science was saying in the 1970s but that such was possible should certain events happen. The body of evidence about global warming has been the same since the 1940s. I'm not sure what you're saying here but I would be happy to address it. This is something that is important to me and I want to make sure we're on the same page.

To begin with, we're not blaming all changes on human activity because we know that some changes are from other factors. We do know, however, that in the last 200 years, human activity has caused the overwhelming majority of change. The record the earth has left for us is abundantly clear on that and that is what we study to find out what and why of the changes. We can reverse or at least stabilize it but we have to act now. This is not something we can wait for another decade. Carbon taxes force some of those changes and is the only way people will do the right thing in many cases.
-
I fail to see how this is "liberal." Human activity is causing changes in the climate, which in turn is changing the ecological systems that affect all life on this planet. How is that "liberal?"

There is more in the article that you must have not read. Climate change is resulting in ice melt and the reason for an increase in population (however, temporary) is that the plants and shrubs can be exposed, grow and the reindeer can feed. However, without the colder weather, lichen, the mainstay of reindeer diet, is declining and this is now causing population decline within the reindeer species.
-
Climate change is having an effect on the Reindeer population and other species are in an even more precarious situation. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/12/12/reindeer-becoming-smaller-due-global-warming-research-finds/
