  1. BTW, your topic title should be "like to get your tax REFUNDS early; not this time you won't". Even though you can't file a return until January 30, 99% of people who file early get refunds and don't have to pay. Even if my return is completed on February 3, which it has been in years past, it isn't filed until April 14.
  2. Ah, now I understand. You're saying 10% of the people are intelligent enough and good enough at what they do to understand that they are better off to owe the government when they file their tax return than to get a refund. Happy to be part of the 10%.
  3. So, you're saying 10% of the people are too ignorant to understand they gave the government an interest free loan for up to a year?
  4. We have an intersection near us that has seen three fatality accidents and the loss of four lives just since we've been here, having moved in April. Virtually everyone agrees that a stop light needs to be installed but also virtually everyone agrees that a stop light won't prevent horrific accidents as is prone to happen at that intersection. Visibility is excellent there. But it's very difficult to judge how far away someone is. It's a wide intersection. It's not so much the intersection at fault with the accidents as it is drivers. The drivers on the main road fly through the intersect
  5. Ah, yes, your "target" audience. The ones who have wealth envy and who actually believe the government is sending them free money when they get that refund. They don't think about the fact that they loaned the government that money INTEREST FREE. Yes, your "target" audience. The ones who pay exorbitant fees so they can get a "refund anticipation loan" a few days earlier than they could get ALL of their refund. Tax prep places like H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt LOVE that "target" audience. They make megabucks on them. And in case you haven't read what I posted, the day is ONE
  6. You have to wonder if all of that could have been avoided by waiting two weeks to file a return. I never liked submitting an early return. Bugs in the system usually showed up early on. I was the one submitting them and then following up, so if there were problems with the system OR the return, I had to take care of it.
  7. IOW, the ones who have given an interest free loan to the government will want their money back sooner. So, they have to wait a few days. ONE day longer than last year. And let's not forget that a lot of refunds this past year were delayed because of identity theft and this was EARLY FILERS, not those who waited until mid-February or later. A lot of people who pay will file and get an automatic extension which extends their deadline to file, but not to pay, until October 15. I break even, so I usually file around April 1.
  8. Most of that time we had BC/BS but we both remember Aetna. We kept getting cards from them even long after we were no longer covered. It's likely just one employer I would need to check with. I'll ask my hubby to call them and ask. He's kept in touch with them.
  9. You have a good point. All those secondary businesses don't usually come in for several years. But until they arrive, the surrounding businesses do profit. Maybe not all of them but some. I don't know how many of you travel I-85 to Montgomery or I-65 to Mobile, but the secondary businesses that supply the Kia and Hyundai plants have sprouted up like flowers. All along 85 from around LaGrange to Auburn and then both north and south of Montgomery are more suppliers. But many of them have come about in the last couple of years, as Kia and Hyundai began full operations. Same with the area a
  10. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this, but the state roads have speed limits set by the state, not the county or city. IOW, the state has decided which roads will have 45, which will have 55 and which ones will have even lower speed limits. City of Hiram used to make more revenue from liquor sales than property taxes. Good to see this has changed to speeding and traffic fines. And when did anyone get a ticket in Paulding if it wasn't inside the city limits of Hiram or Dallas? I've seen people fly by sheriff's cars.
  11. I got a notice that I'm part of a class action lawsuit against Aetna Insurance Company. It requires you state which years you were covered by them. I got rid of a ton of stuff from 2001 through 2008 when I moved. I KNOW at some point during that time we had Aetna but have no idea which years. Is there a SIMPLE way to find that out? The form I have to fill out goes back to 2001. Between 2001 and 2013, my husband had four employers and one of those employers changed insurance carriers three times during his one year employment. Three times we were covered by COBRA. I can remember Un
  12. I went to those three. What year did he graduate? Hey NOW!! I resemble that!
  13. Oh, Tess, they aren't moving "soon". They're already here!! Fitting six people in a house that two normally live in has been a challenge. Thus the Valium and liquor. The liquor stores here are a bit odd. We live in a "semi-dry" county. No liquor sales in the city limits. Only beer and wine in the city limits. No alcohol sales on Sunday anywhere in the county except at the beach. Even restaurants can't sell on Sunday except at the beach. We have to go to a neighboring county on Sunday to buy beer. Or to the beach. I doubt they would deliver this far away. But you never know. We
  14. The government shutdown MONTHS ago had some to do with the delay of the start of the tax filing season. The delay is caused by the need to test the software and the IRS systems. It is ONE DAY LATER than the previous tax filing start date, which was January 30, 2013. Not only that, Congress LOVES to change things at the last minute and last minute changes can cause delays. http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/2014-Tax-Season-to-Open-Jan.-31;-efile-and-Free-File-Can-Speed-Refunds I, for one, never understood why the IRS started processing and accepting returns before W2s were due. S
  15. EXACTLY!!!!!!!! Mr Dis, it just means that if you work for a small business and get your W2 on January 15, you have to wait to file your taxes. I always told my clients to wait until about the middle of February because companies that have to send out W2s, 1099s, 1098s, etc. have until January 31 to complete them (in most cases) but that does not mean YOU will have them on January 31. In fact, I've seen some returns be held up because the taxpayer was waiting on something that they didn't receive until a third phone call to the issuer, at the beginning of April. Do yourselves a fav
  16. Years ago my husband and I saw a sign at a church that we both just fell in love with and relate to. It said "happy is the man who wants what he has". Neither of us could care less about buying designer clothes, shopping at the mall (except at Academy Sports) or living in a fancy house. We want little. We got rid of a houseful of stuff before we moved. And haven't missed but one or two things we got rid of! Would have liked the wrapping paper that I gave my daughter but she got rid of it before they moved. I was tickled pink by one of my Christmas presents. It was what I'd be
  17. We just prefer not to have a lot of expenses each month. Having done things this way for a long time made living on one small fixed income a lot easier. We would be hurting, BIG TIME, if we had mortgage payments or car payments on what we live on now. When we were making good money, we saved instead of spent. That way, we could get the things we needed or wanted, when we wanted or needed them IF we could afford them, and weren't obligating ourselves for money we might not have later on. When our income went from $5000 for three days work and as many days a month as we wanted, to less than
  18. I was told by the tax prep place where I was going to go to work that they didn't even start accepting returns to be filed until February 1. That's a good practice. We usually got our first in around the 3rd or 4th of February. No point in filing early, IMO. Like I said the only instance where it would make sense to file early would be if you have one W2 and that is all you'll get--no 1099, no 1098, nothing else.
  19. We paid cash for 25 acres of land in 1996. We paid cash for a house in 2001. We paid cash for the house we're living in. We paid cash for the Saturn Sky we bought in 2008. Paid cash for the Kia Optima we bought in 2010. We haven't had ANYTHING financed since the 2000 F-250 we bought in 1999 and paid off in 2001. I have no credit. None. Zip. Zilch. My credit card is a business card that is paid off every month. My husband has a credit card but it, too, is paid off every month. We don't buy if we can't afford it. PERIOD.
  20. The only reason you should file early is if all you have is ONE W2 and you received it already. Otherwise, if you have anything else, you're better off waiting. This past tax season, those who filed early actually received their refunds later than those who filed after them, due to the problems with identity theft.
  21. Many people who file early end up having to file amended returns when all of their information finally reaches them in either late February or early March. I never could figure out why the time they start accepting returns is earlier than the deadline for producing W2s. Banks are notorious for getting 1099s out in early February and a lot of investment companies and pension plans are even later getting out 1099R statements.
  22. LOL. Imagine the look on the face of the car salesman back in 1992 when my husband went in to a local dealer, dressed in jeans and a regular shirt and talked to them about buying a car. The salesman took note of the car, not a luxury model by any stretch of the imagination, and then asked if he qualified for financing. My husband said "probably but I plan on using my American Express card to buy it". The salesman laughed and said "you're kidding, right". Husband pulled out his wallet, pulled out his Gold AMEX card and said "no, I'm not kidding". And yes, we paid the bill in full when it
  23. I get getting notices to appear. Yeah, well until the government can verify my identity in order for me to get health insurance, I'm not worrying about having to "appear" anywhere.
