  1. Some other stories on this incident show that the young man was not involved in the fight (video from the store) and, of course, the officers allegedly found a small baggy of marijuana on the kid but failed, obviously to find a pistol? that the youth miraculously was able to discharge into his chest in such a way that killed him. Other reports suggest that the youth had a $800 tax refund in his pocket at the time and, given there was no fight, the viewing of the body by the father suggested that the man had been beaten about the face ... presumably by officers. So, what do you think happe
  2. While normalcy returns to Ferguson Missouri - the right complaining because the black residents there are using the controversy to register voters for the next off-season municipal elections (They're held in March there, not November), news is finally filtering out from another case where a presumably unarmed 22 year old man, sitting in the back of a patrol car, committed suicide with a bullet through his back after being arrested for less than a gram of suspected marijuana while holding (apparently a disappeared) $800 in cash from a tax return. The case is that of Victor White, III, son
  3. I believe that Kristoff said that bigotry is not the problem - bigotry being the out-front expression of intolerance. Racism in his definition - and the type that is so pernicious - is subtle and often denied. It comes in the decision of who gets an opportunity when there is a choice. It comes in the instant of the crisis when the officer is either going to pull the trigger or not. It could be expressed as the .10th of second delay that lets the event unfold just long enough to recognize that the item pulled from the inside coat jacket was a cell phone and not a gun meaning the trigger
  4. I believe you ... just like I believe you are the only non-racist person on pcom and that if Obama does this, it is wrong and if he does that, its wrong and if you suggest he do something else and the day after tomorrow he does that, he's wrong. pubby

  6. There are two videos, both dealing with the minds of people. The first relates to using MRIs as a tool for biofeedback and promises, among other things, way for people to relearn and even manipulate the way in which their brains interpret information. Among the purposes, of course, is the elimination of chronic pain for instance. The second video also references a MRI and how the British Dept of Health, chose to fund a program to study the brains of some of the most violent criminals in England ... many so-called psychopaths. The researcher in the second video calls upon some of the
  7. Working with a team of physicists, Dr. Deborah Rhodes developed a new tool for tumor detection that's 3 times as effective as traditional mammograms for women with dense breast tissue. The life-saving implications are stunning. So why haven't we heard of it? Rhodes shares the story behind the tool's creation, and the web of politics and economics that keep it from mainstream use. 9. Given that unemployment in this county has been as low as 3.5 percent and as low as 4.5 percent nationally in 'good times' ... one might suggest that not nearly as many people are refusing to work as you might imagine. The absolute plain fact of the matter is that the rate of unemployment is largely a factor of FED policy and other policies and most folks absolutely prefer to work than not. Some employers, however, fail to recognize that their employment policies - which are in some cases demeaning and designed to intimidate or otherwise disrespect those who would work for them are oft
  10. you asked that already and I answered that already ... and the answer was quite similar to that of Kristoff ... I grew up in segregation and by definition, despite my best efforts, I am still the product of my culture. My long answer was directed toward you in another recent topic. You of course, claim to be unaffected by your law enforcement background and other acculturation and (pretend to be) are as pure as the driven snow ... or is that coal. pubby
  11. In his column on August 28th, NYTimes columnist Nickolas Kristoff asks the question if we all aren't a little bit racist. As he noted in the article, the problem is not overt racist or racism, but rather the subtle prejudices we all (apparently blacks included ... read on) have as a result of our cultural upbringing and expectations. Here are some excerpts.
  12. That doesn't change the fact that USA as a whole - in our quest to establish Law and Order - incarcerates people at a rate much higher than the rest of the world and actually has the largest population of people behind bars of any other nation - more than China which has 1.3 billion people - about four times as many people as we do. pubby
  13. Maybe so, but most of the DAs and other elected officials I've run into in Georgia and Oklahoma were big on 'law and order' and would call someone doing things like that a bleeding heart... and they would never do things like that for fear of being misidentified as a liberal. A few judges might deny the petition to try the youth as an adult but it wouldn't often be because the system was designed to 'coddle' budding criminals. Heck, some judges would do it so they could get a kickback when they sentenced the youth to a private prison. Don't believe me, let me google that for you. pubby
  14. I was never a bully but if video was available in those days you could have captured one of me throttling another youth - not under the exact circumstances - but certainly I remember turning one boy blue who jumped me when I was 16. pubby
  15. I do understand that ... but ... The one's I've known are usually the sons of daughters of lawyers, doctors, judges, cops and elected officials. Heck, even the one's who did a little vandalism at EPHS were threatened with being charged as adults ... if memory serves. I don't think Missouri is any more liberal than Georgia in that respect. pubby

  17. I just find it hard to believe that a big black kid having, as is alleged, murdered someone, would get a juvenile 'bye' ... It is not like his mom or dad are doctors, lawyers, elected officials or cops. If he was a bully, as the right-wing narrative is seeking to suggest, his chance of not being tried as an adult would be virtually nil. pubby
  18. My gut is that this version of it will be thrown out of court simply because the reply stated an administrative appeal process that was not pursued. The purpose of the suit in this form is to put the allegations of a youthful second degree murder charge on the record without any other information. The truth of the matter is that the youth probably would have been old enough at the time of the alleged infraction for the serious crime of murder - even in the second degree - and would have been tried as an adult. Certainly, if there is truth in the allegation, there would be a dead body
  19. I'm kind of confused too. I saw another report that said the call came from a neighbor who reported prowlers. They were seen walking (presumably clothed as there was no public indecency charge) and the officer stopped them to investigate. Some how he got the idea that they had just had sex (I guess) and proceeded to ask them about it and they laid it out for him. Apparently at that point, the officer placed them in custody and read them their rights, paramount among those rights being the right to remain silent - which had they heeded, would have left them with a prowling charge. (They we

  23. Most probably. There has been a great deal of false information of this type ... enough where anyone interested in the truth figures the yelp may just be crying wolf ... again. But character assassination is part of the strategy of disinformation. pubby
