I believe that the crosses are more for the family that is left behind than for the person that has passed. I think it is a way of saying goodbye and saying the things that they would have liked to say to the one that passed. Lppt I think they are called chiggers down here in the south. Just put fingernail polish on the bite and it will stop the itching and kill the chigger. If you stepped on me barefooted I would bite you too.

I agree about the gasoline. Wait until dark take a flash light and go out there and pour gasoline into the hole and stuff paper towels into the whole and leave it there a few days and problem is solved. They will either die or run out of gas. It really works I have done this many times. Good luck. If the whole is to big to fill with paper towels just take a towel and soak it in gasoline and wrap it around the whole tree and leave it there. hope this helps.
