  1. And let's not forget...Austin, Cole, Moody, Fennell, Rainwater, Henderson, Camp, Paris, Parris, McClung, Croker, Tidwell, Hayes, Morris, Lester, etc. The list goes on and on. I always hated it when my Granny asked the dreaded question: "Who's your boyfriend?" Because I knew as soon as I told her the next sentence would be: "Why, he's your cousin!" Maybe that's why I wound up marrying "out of state."

  2. Well, folks, I must defer to SBW. She is the reigning queen of this thread with that inspired post of hers!! The "chiggers" remark did it for her. I guess I needed to make it more difficult by throwing in "slap," too: "Man, I worked 12 hours today. I am slap wore out!"

    Surepip:

All my summer vacations at my grandparents in Lakewood included a trip to the Wren's Nest! My kids have never heard the Tales. I guess I have done them a dis-service. I think my sister has my grandfather's ancient volume, but like I said, he had memorized many of them and for years I thought they were HIS stories. My personal favorite character was Brer Terrapin- one who didn't recur too often.

  3. Excellent, Eddie!! I was wondering if anyone was going to refer to that Uncle Remus story. I grew up on Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, and Brer Fox. My Grandaddy was a master storyteller who had almost every one of those tales memorized.

ANG: "Waitin' on" is a dead giveaway for a Southerner. Also, saying "tote" instead of "carry." BTW, I love that new avatar- a hyena, cool. B) Or is that a dingo? Ain't no polecat, I know that!

  4. Wow, some of y'all are a lot smarter than I gave you credit for. I didn't realize there were so many subtle variations of "tar," however. I would have used it in the sense of: "Y'all better settle down or I'm gonna beat the tar out of you!" Obviously being from the South gives one an advantage, but I think there are a few Yankees among us who could seriously skew the curve.

Surepip: "fixing to:" to get ready; to prepare to do

My husband says when a Southerner says they are fixin"to do something it might mean they'll get around to it in a few minutes or a few weeks!

  5. Yeah, well, TBAR don't give yourself too much credit. While Southfire's creation was impressive, I can't give him an A+ because he mis-used a couple of them:

"Snakey" in this sense should be used as an adjective/adverb: I better cut the grass. The backyard's getting snakey looking it's so growed up.

"Covered up:" We went to Longhorn's last night and had to wait 2 hrs. for a table. It was covered up!

    Do-overs are acceptable.

  6. Just curious to know how many true intellectuals we have here. I came up with my own IQ test. Try this: See if you can make a sentence using ALL of the following words/phrases:

"over yonder" (may substitute "up yonder," "down yonder"), "snakey," "reckon," "fixing to," "directly," "settle down," "covered up," and "tar."

While it may not be possible to come up with an intelligible sentence without using run-ons, I think some could make a valiant effort. Even if you can't do it, give it your best shot!

  7. Thanks, ANG, those are some good ones. I especially like the "armor of God" one myself. My husband says he does that everyday when he walks into work.

Here are a couple of my own favorites:

"But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh." (2Corinthians 4: 7-11)

"...My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will." Matthew 26: 39

"Consider the work ofGod. Who can make straight what he has made crooked? On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man cannot find fault with him in anything."

    Ecclesiastes 7: 13-14

Among many others, these have been my mainstay through stormy times throughout my life. I simply could not envision my life without my Faith. They are one in the same as far as I am concerned.

  8. No, she has not posted yet. In fact, I haven't even caught her lurking. She will, though. I will say something and she will get mad and she won't be able to keep quiet. Oh, its' a pretty safe bet I won't agree with something she says...I think she is a Kerry supporter (for now)! If that happens I will do what I did when she was little: Jump up and down, scream and holler, threaten to beat her, and she will STILL do what she pleases!!
