  1. We could all just donate what we can spare too. I do it all of the time to my Grand Kids schools. That is totally different from being forced to do it.
  2. County (taxpayer) isn't footing the bill for gas, insurance, cost of vehicle, and wear and tear on the vehicles of parents who drive their kids to school. They don't need to be hit for more services they don't use. I like it just fine because you are right!
  3. I don't know what middle ground you are talking about. The BOE has not been pro-active in cutting costs in the last few years. They are now going to have to be re active. We have been hit by tax increases for years. I am tired of paying for things that are NOT ESSENTIAL to EDUCATION and I meant just that. We can't afford it any longer. As far as transportation that is one of the things that is not required by law to be provided. I kind of like the idea of asking those who ride buses to help defray the cost.
  4. No, it doesn't. There is nothing in your figures to reflect the cutting of programs NOT essential to education. When they can show me that they have done that then I will talk about an increase in mill rate or taxes.
  5. I have no problem with paying for education up to a point! If the system cannot show me that they have cut all programs that are not essential to EDUCATION then I don't want them to ask me for one more dime! The school system is not alone in seeing a budget crunch. A lot of folks are out of work and others have seen their incomes decline. We are not a wealthy county. Do away with all programs not directly related to education or do not pay their own way then come and ask me to reach into an already far emptier pocket!
  6. I don't know about Paulding but I have encouraged my Kid to look at sending my Grand Kids to school in Cobb. I know it is a possibility if you pay tuition to the public school of choice (if they are accepted). Yep, I am willing to pay it. Cobb is cutting big chunks from their budget. I am still waiting to see what Paulding is cutting. I still don't think they know what the budget will look like. How can they know if the state still has not figured out what they will be sending to the counties. The state HAS to balance it's budget according to State Law. Aren't they still agonizing over
  7. I will raise my hand too. A good many of us pay thousands I would think.
  8. I did read an article recently about strings being attached to stimulus money accepted by Counties who applied for them. I have not seen anything about Georgia having gotten on board with national standards. Here is an article on what has been released about them recently: http://blogs.ajc.com...t_schooled_blog Here is another good article on National Standards: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/10/AR2010031000024.html
  9. Don't know if they can do that when the system is supposedly free. Might as well send them to private school. I think the money should follow the child and always have. I have never wanted the village to interfere with raising my children. Don't like the end result when they are raised by the village. It takes caring PARENTS to raise a child.
  10. I know some who have tried and found that there are no books that go along with the curriculum. That is why I said that GVA found them but the regular system says they have not found any that cover the Georgia standards. That is my understanding of it. Some parents would be more than willing to pay for their child to have books if they could get them.
  11. Are you sure Georgia has agreed to go with National Standards? GVA books meet State Standards but I don't think the program goes beyond 8th grade. Me too! Why don't we stop this stuff?
  12. I think books should be provided to every child and that the curriculum should match the books. It doesn't now (in most subjects) even when the books are issued. I know there are folks on here who disagree but I will always believe it. The books that go along with GVA are wonderful and it was one of the reasons my Grand Kid learned so much while in that program. Totally different from the curriculum taught in the regular public school system. Even if the book is on a CD the kids should have one. JMO
  13. I have asked and have not gotten an answer yet. I am not sure they really know yet. Here is the link to the AJC article. It is not going to be pretty for any school district. http://www.ajc.com/news/metro-schools-to-slash-369626.html
  14. I would rather the BOE be proactive instead of reactive. It might save us all some grief. Budget shortfalls are getting worse not better. Job loses have increased too. The counties who will be in the best shape to handle all of this will be the ones who have cut their budgets in the beginning instead of waiting until they are forced into it.
  15. I did hear that the President wants to shield the failing schools from any repercussions and he wants to reward those that show that they have made progress. I can't understand why he would even keep it if this is what he has in mind. I heard that on the news today. I think it has been an absolute failure.
  16. Larger class sizes and more control for local school districts are some of the things included in House bill 1130. At least they are working on finding some solutions to the budget crunch. I wonder how some of our teachers feel about this? http://www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/article/30658/ House bill 1130, sponsored by Jefferson Rep. Tommy Benton, allows school districts to increase class sizes and lifts state controls on how schools spend some of their state funding. The bill passed the House Education Committee on Thursday.
  17. Grand Kid home safely. Said it wasn't that hard. Yeah right!
  18. The big three Detroit-based companies have a long history of a much larger number of recalls, both voluntary and forced. That is something that should be considered in all of this. The Media is making a big deal out of the Toyota troubles. I guess we will just have to see where it all leads.
  19. I would like to see all candidates judged on their own merits and qualifications. They should not be judged based upon who they may have worked with or by someone else's work. JMO
  20. UAW has not been successful in enrolling the Toyota work force and they support the Democrats. GM is now owned by the Government which competes with Toyota. Democrats are in control of the government right now and supported by the UAW which benefited by the government takeover of GM. They would love to get their union into Toyota plants. Of course Toyota troubles and the hearings before Congress ( like a trial) could benefit them.
  21. Grand Kid will be going to a school in Cobb to take it because they had no more space here in Paulding.
  22. Toyota's troubles will end when they let the union into their factories! Just my conspiracy thought for the day! I think there is more behind a lot of these stories.
  23. Did they mention which Party ticket he will run on?
