  1. He took cycling into the mainstream as a sport. He was the first national name in cycling and most famous international cyclist. My sister raced with him, not on his team, but in a race with him, in the early 1990's and he was a big deal BEFORE he won the first Tour De France. I remember how excited she was to meet him....and his first wife. What bothered me was how agressive he was toward those who spoke truthfully. It's not easy being attacked for more then a decade and KNOWING you told the truth. As for Lance...Karma is kicking his azz right now. It's not so much the doping..
  2. I spent some time in the Tuscaroara Valley last year. I have no idea if I spelled that right. It's between Gettysburg and Harrisburg in the middle of Amish Country. We had a hard time driving around because I kept pulling over to take pictures. If I lived there, I would never get anywhere on time because I'd be too busy looking out the window. Some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen! I think that's why I want to go camping this time, I didn't get the chance to do much in PA and those mountains left an impression on me. Of course, there's no place like home and the North Geo
  3. I didn't know about the driver shortage. I DO know and have personally witnessed, that sometimes the busses are held up at school. They're not always released exactly at 2:30 (at our elementary school). I pick mine up in the afternoons and have watched almost every day while one or more busses is held back and the others are released. The other day, it was a mechanical issue with one bus and the other had to double up. Most of the time, its a snotty kid mouthing off to the busdriver who gets the VP to come out and talk to the student. I know this because I'm friendly with most of the tea
  4. This sounds very romantic. Jekyll Island is on our "list" but when the kids are older. Granny is in Montgomery so we want to be close enough to get there fast in case of emergency. And the North Carolina spot sounds nice, too. Also have to put off until kids are a little older. But I will google it!
  5. That was the other spot I was looking at, more rural, which is a plus. Also closer, another plus. But no established "backcountry" sites (that I could find online). We were going to take a day trip up there to check it out and talk to DNR about where we could camp. I just keep leaning toward Cloudland. Someone else mentioned bears, I knew about that. I have a bear canister and that's another reason this won't be a family trip, since we'll be going in early Spring. To be perfectly honest, I am more concerned with the humans in the woods then the animals. And I'll make sure to inves
  6. Cheaha is one of our favorites. My husband is from Alex City, Al. We got married at Kowligia at Lake Martian and we've haunted most of the woods between there and here ever since. DeSoto Caverns is worth the small admission fee and the gift shop had nice items for extremely reasonable prices. You SHOULD check it out!
  7. My husband and I ususally take a few days a year, usually during Spring Break, for ourselves. Grandma takes over the kids and we're "free". We used to do B&B's, Tunica, and the beach, but last year we missed our chance. THIS year, as I think through the options, I realize I really want to go camping and hiking. With my kids, I can't take them on some of the trails I used to love. Besides, as I research, those are now some pretty popular areas now. I'm looking for rural, preferably on public lands, where we can check in and let someone know we're there, and with established "back coun
  8. They are usually SLAMMED in the mornings. I've had trouble getting through to the switchboard and I've had a few rude ones. I let them ride the bus in the morning, but I pick them up at school after...Most days, I get them home a full 30 minutes sooner then the bus would.
  9. I remember when the real estate agent was showing me houses out here. We were trying to get to this one and we were using GPS. It kept trying to take us down Harris Loop Rd, AFTER they demo'd the old bridge and during the few years the road didn't go all the way through to Winndale. It used too, and does now, but for a few years, it didn't. Everytime I invited friends or family over, I had to tell them "follow GPS until you get to the Harris Loop turn off", then I'd direct them up to 61 and back down Winndale. That was before the Kroger was there!
  10. I usually call them if they are "really late" (to me, that's more then 15 mins) Here is the number for "the bus farm", the central office for the busses: 770-443-8035
  11. Ok, found out more info. Its not really facebook, its more like businesses. Its because I "liked" a business or maybe because of a comment on a news media page affiliated me with "supporting" that business whether or not that was my intention. Also, the payout equates to "about $10". Doesn't really seem worth it. I "liked" a business for a reason and knew that by doing so, it let my "friends" know I supported that business. That's not my definition of "using an image (profile pic) or likeness for advertising purposes".
  12. I got the phone call first, the email came yesterday too. I have the same opinion but I'm wondering Why Me? I'm so careful about what I post, especially pictures. And I'm EXTRA careful about privacy.
  13. Ummm, this is an odd question. I've been contacted by a lawyer, both by phone and email, and found out that facebook used my image and likeness for advertising purposes and I am entitled to recieve a portion of a settlement from a class action lawsuit filed by someone else, but that I am eligible to recieve a portion of the payout. Has anyone else received this information? How do I find out where and when facebook used my image? Also, how can they use my image when I am private. By private I mean, you'd have to be a friend of a friend to even search for me...if I don't have you bloc
  14. I agree with those that have no issues driving through Hiram. I was originally going to say maybe they're busy chasing down the gas drive-offs, or alleged discount store shoplifter, both of which I have seen 5 out of 5 times I've last been in Hiram. I often have a lead foot and find myself hovering above 50 in the dreaded speed trap zone. I either don't fit a profile or I hit the brake at the perfect moment, because I've never been harrassed. Of course, I'm on pcom so I pay attention and am well aware that stuff happens so I address each officer with respect and the realization that if I'm
  15. Early May 2012. I was trying to switch the household account out of my mom's name and into mine since she no longer lives with us. I had the full amount due for that final bill and enough for what I thought was a decent deposit for the new account, but they wanted $715 for a deposit, which was just about half our monthly income at that time. The amount literally took my breath away. I was told the amount was 2 and a half times the highest monthly bill (August) for the past two years at that address. I could not pay it. They told me they'd cut off the power completely. I fell to my knee
  16. I've had someone in the woods behind our neighborhood shooting many times recently. They weren't hunting, they were just shooting. The first time, all the neighbors just texted and called each other about it. But over a couple of days, it happened during the daylight hours (not at dusk or dawn which tells us its hunters) and kept getting closer. We started calling the PCSO and they responded quickly. Each time they came out, the shooting stopped so we knew the people could see us. After the police left, it would start up immediately. After about a week of this, I stepped out back to sup
  17. Yes, it's their answer to flat rate billing. I have to admit, I hated that it was our only choice, however, it has worked out better for us as far as savings. I have been able to track our daily consumption and I have reduced our usage. I average under $2.00 a day right now. When I was a regular account, I averaged about $5.00 a day. I switched in May, so this summer, my highest bill was $150. I worked HARD to average that with the heat. You're right, its exactly like that. When you get down to about $20 left on the account, they text and email you. If you get to 0, your p
  18. I don't know how much the difference is between other accounts. The new charge today is double the daily consumption usage. They didn't give a reason, just raised it from .10 cents a day to .20 cents a day charge. That's right off the bat, before the actual consumption is calculated.
  19. They reduced their rates twice in the last year, once was in August during peak summer consumption. They did it because they receieved federal funds to upgrade their lines and they had $$ left over. They passed the savings on to their customers. Greystone raised rates June 1st, November 1st, and again starting today for the prepaid customers.
  20. Maybe it's the fact that so many of us are saving money by using the prepaid service. The rise in charges amounts to about $70 a year for those of us who can't afford the 2 and a half times the highest monthly bill as a deposit on the account, the prepaid service is our only choice. Since i've been on the plan, I've reduced my consumption from an average of $125-$150 a month to $60-$75 a month. I guess they had to find a way to make up for that. There is a reason I reduced my consumption and it's because I don't want to give them one red cent more then I have to. I am one who is beggi
  21. I want you all to know that last night was rough, but I read through this thread and all of your personal experiences have given me that little push to keep going. I didn't plan to quit, I got sick. I realized really quickly that I just happened to stop smoking and then I wanted it to continue. Now, it's totally mental. I have no need for smoking other then habit. I find myself with ten mintues before dinner is ready and I want a cigarette. To see how many of you have quit and kept it up, that gives me strength. I do feel better, stronger. I'm still sick and I don't have that whi
  22. I have turtles as pets. Two Slyders (water turtles), a Red-footted Tortoise (the turtle in the ford pic above), and a Floridia Box Turtle that smb90 frantically rescued from a dog attack. Turtles are actually intelligent, but for us they're extremely entertaining. The two Slyders and the Red Foot were given to me by a pcommer well over a year ago and we weren't sure the Flordia Box Turtle would make it, but it did! My whole family has fallen in love with our pets. Last year, I saw a Red-Foot crossing Macland Road. I had my small children in the car. I pulled over, but to do so safel
  23. I've been staying away from the places where I would buy the cigarettes. I had certain spots because of prices. Today, I've thought about it all day. I'm still sick, so that is helping to curb the urges. I fully understand that it is a mental thing and I would only cheat myself. I love the beach, love the sea. I have always wanted to dive, even more since we lost my nephew. I want to experience that world, to be at the bottom of the ocean and see what he saw and loved so much that it defined him. Thanks for the help, everyone! I am both inspired and encouraged!!
  24. The saving money is huge. If my husband successfully quits and we save every penny we would have spent on "cancer research" (as we put it), then we could fully fund our Roth IRA. Instead of killing ourselves slowly, we could be millionaires at retirement. Thanks for the inspriation!! I'm fighting it! I love the suggestion for looking up scuba pics. I'm going to print some and put them up at the back door, where I used to sneak out and smoke at. I'm also going out to clean up all the butts in the yard. It's cold, but looking at the mess is bothering me. i want it gone!!!
  25. I recently quit smoking. For whatever reason, today is the day I have an overwhelming urge to chain-smoke. I am fighting the desire to go buy a pack of cigarettes. My motivation? Besides my health and being a good example for the kids....I want to go scuba diving. My nephew was a Navy Diver and I want to see what he saw. I've never been because I've smoked for 17 years and didn't think I would ever quit. My aunt promised if i do keep it up, she'd take me to Australia to dive the Great Barrier Reef. So how about you? Have you quit smoking or some other bad habit that you want to bra
