  1. This thread makes me think of a former employer of mine. The man was impossible to work for. Domineering, controlling, impossible to please and an all-around jerk and a**h***. I worked for him for seven of the longest weeks of my entire life, two of which was my two week notice. When I told him I was quitting he said he didn't want to see my a** again until he saw it walking out the door on my last day. Nice guy, huh? Well, the thing is, he is a doctor. Several years after leaving there I was talking with a patient of his and asked how in the world anyone could stand to go to him. She
  2. Oh, definitely being nice and doing things for free will bring referrals but so much of the time they want the work done for free, too. You have to know when and where to draw the line. I gave my clients a lot more work than they ever paid me for. I also gave all my employers more work than they paid me for. I also knew when to say I'm not doing any more for free.
  3. Every business owner has to be a "jerk" at some point, even with a customer or a client. Example: my husband had a machine shop back years ago. He had one customer who always wanted the work done for free. ALWAYS. Initially, he did that because it was always just a right quick welding job and he wanted to have good relations with the surrounding people who could possibly send better paying work his way. Finally one day he had had all the requests for the free work he could handle. He pointed to the sign on the wall about the minimum charge and told the guy that included him from th
  4. If everyone perceived things the same way or liked the same things, there would only be Walmart, Publix, Allstate, Coke, Levis, Briar Patch, Racetrac, CVS, etc. And yes, some people perceive the same thing differently than another person. My mom had a friend who said she could not stand the office staff at one of her doctor's offices. I happened to go to the same doctor and thought the staff was really nice and professional. It was her attitude that got in the way of her perception of things.
  5. That's what I did to come up with the information I posted for the OP.
  6. I have the name card from my dad's graduation. It was a bit before 1944 though. It was Smyrna High, too. I think I have one of the graduation announcements around here somewhere (where is the operative word since most of that stuff is still in boxes).
  7. Yep. I remember that! Hubby unloaded a beat up, smelly pair of shoes at the Piccadilly in Cumberland back years ago. Wasn't his plan but that's how it worked out. We always wondered what the person who stole them thought when they opened the Florsheim box and found a beat up smelly pair of tennis shoes.
  8. Ah, Subby, I'm a third generation Smyrnanite. It's Mei Lan we're inducting. She is a worthy soul, however. A little history: my grandparents lived in downtown Smyrna near what is now, or used to be, Jonquil Plaza until New Years Day 1917 when they moved to Old Concord Road to the house my grandmother remained in for the rest of her life (she passed away in 1972). My grandmother was born in Vinings as was my dad and all his brothers and sisters. I believe the fire station is now where their house stood in Vinings. The old homeplace on Old Concord is now a townhouse complex and has bee
  9. I second Mei Lan as a Smyrnanite, And a Viningsite (my dad was born in the real Vinings as was his mother so I guess that gives me that authority).
  10. It appears to be a telemarketer. You can read reports about that number here: http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/2564471651
  11. Getting quotes on new windows this Friday. I just hope they really save as much on heating and cooling as we think they will. Might take a few years to pay for them but we really feel the difference in comfort will be immediate even if the energy cost savings takes a while . It gets really hot in the kitchen and living room in the late afternoon because of the sun coming in the uninsulated windows on that side of the house.
  12. I hate snow but it is very pretty to look at. As long as I don't have to get in it, I'm good with it.
  13. I completely agree with you. I'd be afraid that if I woke up without pain that would mean I died during the night. But I continue to enjoy life to the fullest in spite of the pain.
  14. What do I like? Other than my husband, my kids and grandkids (who'd thunk that, right?), I have developed a love for going to the river to relax. We try to go every couple of days, often getting there at 8 a.m. in order to get the best swimming spot. I LOVE my new home and the new hometown. I used to enjoy beading and crocheting but as the arthritis in my fingers has worsened I have had to stop those but I still want to do that and may give it another try, especially the crocheting. I have also discovered in the last few years almost a passion for learning. I've done se
  15. My mom, who loved bright color clothes and thought all colors went together, absolutely LOVED Payne Stewart primarily because of the way he dressed. I hope she would be as happy with our hometown boys down here--Bubba, Boo and Heath. They don't dress like Stewart did but they all play pretty decent golf.
  16. When I was paying the electric bill at my daughter's house, it was on budget billing. I overpaid a few months thinking that it would reduce the overage. Instead, they kept deducting it from the budget bill amount, leaving the overage the same. That wasn't my intent. If you're with Georgia Power, call them and tell them you want the overpayment left as a credit. They will do that for you, at least that is what my niece who works for Georgia Power told me. And if you've been on time with your payments and have been with them at least a year, you can do budget billing. With Georgia P
  17. He knows which end of the club to hold now. That is an improvement.
  18. Yeah, I would. Obviously, that was you playing golf. But hey, good exercise, right?
  19. You can bet your bottom dollar we will do that next year. It got too hot for my husband to go in the attic to install fans before he got more than two done. We want four more. Heck, I'd like to have one in the bathroom!
  20. My first name is a good example of that. Block letter for the first letter, cursive for the next two, then a space and then cursive.
  21. Bob Armstrong was a firefighter at the station in Fair Oaks. My best friend worked at the library next door and used to watch him work out. I'm sure with a drool towel handy. I met Bo Bo Brazil at McDonald's on South Cobb Drive, near what is now Chattahoochee Tech, one day. The same friend knew who he was in spite of the fact that he was entirely out of his wrestling persona (wearing the pants with a stripe down the side). A friend of my friend was working with him (no, the friend was not wearing the striped pants, he was a county employee) and made the introductions. He thought it
  22. Double paned insulated windows really, really help, too. We have Gulf Power. Our bill last month was $132. We ran the a/c all the time, have two ceiling fans (one in living room and one in bedroom), are total electric and are in the house about 23 hours out of every day (and some days we don't leave). Our house has over a foot of insulation in the attic, which must help tremendously. We may be able to heat the house with a candle this winter since the winters are not as severe here as they are up there. Our problem is the windows are aluminum frame windows and not insulated. We do
