  1. Suppose you are a newly single mom who is forced to take a job, ANY JOB, in order to put food on the table. You have no skills. Where do you go to work?
  2. I guarantee the media would have reported it differently.
  3. Average pay for full time Walmart associate: $15,576. Poverty level: family of four $23,550 The pay amount was in 2010, I believe and the poverty level is for 2013. Using more recent information for the pay shows an average pay for a FULL time cashier to be $19,105, still below poverty level for a family of 3 or more. The figure for the average pay came from a fact sheet put out by United Food and Commercial Workers. Found here: http://makingchangeatwalmart.org/factsheet/walmart-watch-fact-sheets/fact-sheet-wages/ The figure for poverty level came from US Department of Health a
  4. So you know for a fact that Walmart pays a living wage? I know that for the most part, they don't. I don't have to read about it. All I have to do is ask my daughter, my son in law, one of their best friends and one of my friends. They also do not treat their employees fairly. You should not call someone "part-time" and work them 37 hours this week and 42 hours next week or use some oddball configuration to come up with the work week.
  5. I abhor your charts as they are usually outdated and irrelevant but what you SAID here: "get rid of Wal-Mart; it's the best thing to do" is dead on correct in my opinion. I only go to Wally World when I HAVE to buy certain items that I cannot get as cheaply somewhere else (in case anyone is wondering what they are, they are Alka Seltzer and BC powders). I simply cannot find them anywhere else as cheap. Family Dollar is comparable on the BCs but rarely have the Alka Seltzer. Otherwise, I'd never darken the doors of Walmart. I hate how Walmart treats their employees. I guess that's why th
  6. Hope your nephew recovers quickly. He is one lucky man. Can I ask where in the city limits of Smyrna this happened?? As I said, this could have been my son in law or worse yet, my daughter or anyone else's daughter or son. It's upsetting not just because the black kids beat and robbed (and in the case of the guy in Mableton, killed) a white person it's that it HAPPENED AT ALL. And nobody is called it racially motivated.
  7. It would appear that way.
  8. Yeah, my heart and soul has lived here for a long time. It was about time my body joined them. No, haven't visited there yet. I will. I'm going to finish up this one I'm reading about the financial collapse and then head over there. They may get sick of seeing me once I start going. Them and the yarn store.
  9. No, it would have been covered up in the metro section of a newspaper and swept under the rug. When and if the person went to trial, it wouldn't even garner a blurb.
  10. Prayers for everyone. I know that intersection very well.
  11. Did the driver of the car beat the victim? I suspect not. Who the heck cares what race the driver was. He (or she) was as much a victim as the guy killed was. Absolutely NO comparison between this and the Martin/Zimmerman case. This guy was MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD by four thugs. Why? Because they could? Side note to Pubby. You know how upset I have been about my daughter and son in law walking where they went. I am happy to inform you that they now have a vehicle! I'm one happy Mama and Nana. I worry a lot less about them now than I did with them walking around town. This
  12. You know, several of us on here have said things along the line of the killing of Trayvon Martin could have happened to our grandson. Well, the killing of this young man could have been my son in law, my daughter or my granddaughters. They REGULARLY walk in downtown Austell and have walked to Mableton from Austell. My son in law walked from Austell to Florence Road to work. This VERY easily could have been him. This event is sickening. Part of the reason we were so anxious to get the hell out of Metro Atlanta. It was beginning to happen too often. I can't tell you how many times m
  13. Holding down Powder Town OK without me? I am happy for anyone who opens a business right now!! That shows signs of improvement in the economy. I sooooooo want to visit the used book store across the main road from me. I need to do a trade in though!
  14. I thought it might be someone I know. So, happy for you!!!
  15. Welcome, fellow Smyrnite, Smyrnian, whatever. My mom was in the 30080 zip code, too, on Church Road just east of Old Concord Road.
  16. I lived in Cobb. I worked in Paulding from 1986 until I left three months ago. I did the majority of my shopping, except for groceries, in Paulding. I think maybe what Paulding needs is more promotion. There's plenty of jobs (could be more, that's true but that's true of anywhere these days) and plenty of shopping. Do more to draw the residents back to the county to shop. BTW, post #14 can describe almost anywhere! It's not just Paulding.
  17. But not ACQUIRED viral infections. Agreed, all are factors in heart disease but there are others not as easily recognized.
  18. Yes, that's the restaurant there. I love the hot tubs there at PBR. Best ice cream I EVER ate came from the little ice cream stand in the resort.
  19. What a difference 100 miles or so makes. It's 83 here with a thunderstorm.
  20. I'm jealous!! We just had a good rumble of thunder and now it's getting dark again. But then again, we're about 150 miles apart.
  21. That sounds a lot like Perdido Beach Resort. And yes, off season is the time to be on a panhandle beach!
  22. I hope it's moving our way!! We had a light drizzle earlier this morning and now it's just cloudy. But it is getting bright so maybe the sun will break through.
  23. I haven't been to the beach lately but I did get a picture of this guy between showers. and these a few weeks ago. I'll try to get some beach pictures next time I go. We don't go very often.
  24. We haven't had much problem with the mosquitoes because the county sprays for them. We HAVE had a problem with ants and biting flies. I'm still healing from some ant bites I got over a week ago. Thank goodness for the mosquito spray!
