  1. Oh good grief - you realize we are talking about someone on the street begging for spare change, right?

Even those who take what little they get and buy a pint of liquor instead of an artery-clogging hamburger or pack of peanut butter crackers aren't scamming. They're doing what they have to in order to get by...not everybody needs the same things.

If you had to sleep on the ground in the same clothes you wore yesterday & the day before, you'd probably rather have booze for instead of in addition to dinner, too.

How pro-life can someone be who cites "scammers' as a reason to withhold the cost of a cup of coffee or soda when confronted by someone in need?

  2. Contact Warehouse of Hope in Douglasville. Good people there.

Still, I can't just give a handout to someone not knowing if they are legit or not.

And this^^ attitude is why leaving the needy to rely on the charity of others will not work in this country. Who wants to have to substantiate or verify that they are at a low point in their life and struggling in addition to the mental stress they already endure in return for a dollar or two from someone who has it to spare?

  3. On every other road in the county, they walk on the asphalt.

    At night.

    Dressed in black.

Seriously, I frequently see people crossing 278 at Buchanan Hwy which is a similar intersection, either on foot or bicycle, usually just at or after dark. It's difficult to see them when you're sitting still at the light, much less running 60-65 mph in heavy traffic. I imagine those people would disagree with your assessment that marked crosswalks w/crossing signals are not needed or useful.

All the crosswalks in the county that I've seen lead from one side of the road to the other as they are designed to do.

Where else would you have them go?

  4. Who pays 1,300 a month for employer provided health care. I have had some really cheezety plans in my life and never come close to that number.

Um, mine is almost that much w/BCBS through my employer. I am the only one covered on my plan. No health/medical problems, not on any meds and have probably not filed more than a half dozen claims in 25 years. $1000 deductible

I am sure the cost is partly due to the # of employees in our "group" - 2.

And I am in the insurance business. Go figure.

  5. The thing is, if Romney is working the current tax system and is paying a low rate, more power to him. That means he know how to manage money.

That would be the same tax system that the 'slugs' who get a check despite paying nothing in are working. Kudos to the guy who already has more than enough money to last the rest of his life for being smart enough to slice a hefty sum off his tax bill on the backs of those of us who have no such advantage but hellfire & damnation to those who have so little income they're able to lay claim to a couple thousand dollars every year.

No telling how many of those 'deadbeat' refunds it would take to equal the amount Romney doesn't pay each year after he works the system.

If someone is going to benefit from my tax money (because I certainly don't and never will), I'd much rather it be someone who actually NEEDS it than some exceedingly wealthy person who pays a lower percentage of tax on his/her income than I do.

I find it amazing the number of so-called Christians and proud conservatives who are eager to moralize who excuse the rich and villify the poor for doing exactly the same thing.

Yeah, that's what Jesus said - feed and care for the rich who can easily afford to feed and care for themselves and everybody else can go hang.

  6. Yep. Outside politics few people would care to associate with someone who will say or do anything to get what they want...not sure why we put up with it from the people who claim to be seeking public office to serve their constituents and whose salaries we pay.

So many claim to want term limits, you'd think we could get rid of some of those who have spent so many years in office yet done so little for their constituents during their time there. Not sure if it's a lack of confidence in the field of candidates seeking to unseat them, straight party-line voters or the number of people who vote based on nothing more than name recognition that return even the most blatantly unethical incumbents to office time and time again, but there's a disconnect somewhere between what people say they want and the choices they make come election time.
