I'm on the fence with tests - you should know and prepare for tests. With HW and other such benign things, I think there should be some forgiveness. For instance, I share joint custody of my son with my ex. If the teacher sends home his spelling words, sometimes they will stay at his dad's and he won't realize it until Monday - the day he has to write his spelling words for homework. I'd hate to see him fail because of our situation - and his teacher understands and allows him to write his 5 times each after he's finished with his other work.
