Here's an interesting article. http://www.education-world.com/a_issues/issues303.shtml I was just realizing that I have those prewrapped plastic knife, spoon and fork things with the napkin. God forbid I was in a hurry to get out the door and put one in my 7 year old's lunchbox - and God forbid he turn it in, what's a kid to do? Panic? Do the right thing and risk expulsion? And then what? Single mom has to quit her job or find some way to find the money for private/alternative school. I want beat my head against a wall at the resources WASTED in this country. Just pissed away - -

My son's school does NOT have ridiculous rules like this - they aren't governed by the same idiots in the school district. People should be outraged. I wonder how many 6 year olds are in the TAX PAYER FUNDED district reform school for being good boyscouts. When did our nation lose all it's common sense????? -

I can't believe that we now find it to be okay that this child will be send to a school for mostly "unruly" children and have this on his record -- which will follow him to college. This is assanine. Insane. And I'm sure it does great things for the child. Every time one of these things gets reported, I feel like falling to my knees in praise that I've been blessed enough to keep my kids out of our crappy public school system. -

I'm curious, did you and your ex get along? -
I have the greatest person in my life. He started this tradition of a rose for every year. I love this man!!!

Shared custody parents

I'll let shan check in, but I do think that the girls are close. With skype, phones, etc. it's easy to keep in touch. Of course, the one thing that makes me hesitant is sports. BUT, my ex lives in Woodstock and I'm in Marietta - in some ways, it's just as far apart as 2 seperate states. -

While I appreciate your opinion - I was hoping that some folks would chime in that have had good results. I am considering it, and wouldn't do it without the support and cooperation of my ex. BUT, I'd be moving to a much better school system, be getting rid of the "grind" of Atlanta, be more accessible to arts and culture and, probably most importantly, be able to be a full time mom. There's certainly some pros in there to consider. -
Do any of you share custody of a child and live in seperate states? I'd be interested to hear your set up, opinions and what your kids think about the arrangement.

Welp -- here's my review. The Holocaust museum was one of the most profoundly sad place that I've ever seen. It took me forever to go through it, because it's packed - and half way through I just wanted OUT. They had a special exhibit on Nazi propeganda, which being in marketing I found VERY interesting. This was a 3 hour visit! We also went to the museum of Natural History. Sunday, we unintentionally got stuck in the tens of thousands of protestors marching for equality. That was interesting - to say the least. One of my favorite chants, "We here, we're *rhymes with beer*, we're fa

Why take a cruise? over a standard trip?

This is a great point! And you will be able to eliminate a lot of the unruly kids and old farts with the smaller cruise lines. I don't think that it will be of financial benefit, however. I've never been on the higher end cruises, short of seeing how much classier they are when I've been in a port town. Check PM. -

MCMM - with oil prices so low, you might want to consider the Mediterranean. It would be more cost effective than a tradition European vacation and you can probably get some decent airfare if you book early. Another great place to look is the south pacific! I've never been to Alaska, but I have never heard anything but rave reviews. -

Can I quote you in my signature?? No one jacked my login - I think that it's a product of the way we have become, so hypersensitive that we've been conditioned to view differences as wounded animals that we need to help instead of just...different. No one wants to be labeled as discriminating. -

I'm completely indifferent, really. But I will tell you that the major reason that we don't cruise is because the better half doesn't like people. If you and your wife aren't really social, a cruise is not for you. A boat, no matter how big, gets really small after 2 days. Not to mention, you still see the same damn people even when you port! -

I've always been more conservative than people give me credit for - though, I truly feel that this topic is just simple common sense. Ahh, sorry. I didn't correlate the response with my question. See, I am still the DGITW. -

When you pay for it, you have a lot more influence. Case in point - my son's uniform requirements were all white sneakers. I got the support of other parents to okay all black sneakers as an option because they won't look orange after a week. If it were a public school, I would have heard something like, "it's the county's decision". Quality of education isn't in question here - other that question whether or not this kid has ANY interest in receiving one. -

Gender ambiguity needs to be accommodated - apparently with preferred bathroom rights. Children need some guidelines. To be perfectly honest, I think it's completely LAME that we have so many things for GLBT teens in school. I think it walks a fine line - are we providing resources or encouraging kids to have a way out of 2nd period gym? How do you guys feel about all black colleges? Paid institutions for african american higher education? I have seen MANY criticize the concept, stating, "an all white college (or TV station or scholarship) would be considered racist". -

Dude - I gotta ask you - you really wouldn't care if your 10th grader wore this to school? And after you consider this - answer me honestly...Do you think that public schools are doing a good job of preparing our children for college or the workforce? Do you think that wigs help or hinder that ability? I get the freedom of expression and fashion, but I just can't get on board with kids wearing clown costumes to school. There is a line. We inforce it on short shorts, why? Because they're distracting. We inforce it on shoes (flip flops), why? Because he's "unsafe". We enforc -

I'm bitter too, because he's wasting public resources. Folks will complain about fat cats in Congress, but defend someone that is straining the system from the outside. I just don't understand. -

Ha! Sorry, that did come out WRONG! I love artists! But, generally speaking, he probably won't take a lot away from high school that will help him in his chosen profession. I guess perhaps if he took drama, but public school shouldn't really cater to electives. There are private, performing arts schools - and potentially some public ones (interestingly, there's a GREAT performing arts school in S. Fla that is public and I have 4 friends that graduated from there - 3 are working in Hollywood, one in NYC) - that would better suit his long term goals.
