  1. Browsed through a few pages and didn't see this, so if I missed it then excuse me. Wolf / Ritz Camera Stores to Close First the updated story: http://www.petapixel.com/2012/09/07/its-the-end-of-the-road-for-ritz-and-wolf-camera-stores/ FYI, I went by one of these today because last night after midnight a banner appeared on the Wolf site saying "20-40% off of Everything", which of course didn't really mean that. When I showed up at one today there was only 10% off of the cameras, and it looks like they were marked up at the last minute anyway, so even with the "discount", the pric
  2. The LAST thing we need are rolling blackouts from the electric company, so please, help ease the load on the system during this time. Avoid using high drain appliances like clothes driers and huge screen TVs during the day.... turn off all lights you're not using.... etc. Every bit of power each person saves takes that much off of the "grid", helping to prevent brownouts and blackouts. Tip: If you happen to have an older style manual control attic fan, you can run it for a few minutes during the day, and a few extra minutes once the sun starts to go down, and it helps flush the heat
  3. Ok, I have a basic WD external hard drive. It did not come with password protection software. I'm backing up my photos and want to take this particular drive to work to store it in case something happened at the house, and I want to add basic password protection to it in case anyone just plugged it in, to keep nosy eyes out of it all. I am not savy with passwording and I know people lecture on encryption, but honestly, ALL I want is a very very basic way of setting it up so that when you plug the hard drive in to the computer and try to get into it where the files are, that it would ask
  4. Thanks for the ideas so far, folks. I think I may pass on the Rodney's thing though (just for Thanksgiving) - sounds like REALLY good food, but the three times I've ever eaten "family style" in a restaurant, they've all turned out to be pretty bad experiences with who I had to sit with. so I prefer to wing it in a private booth with a couple of good friends or family members. I guess I'm not as social as some. LOL. But I'll try the place out some other time. Keep the ideas coming though.
  5. Yeah, if anyone has a link to the Rodney's place it would be great. Marietta Diner is a decent place but even on a NORMAL day you usually wait a long time to get in the place. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to tackle Thanksgiving on that one. Plus I have a dog that frankly, is probably very close to passing away due to health issues and (downer alert), I'm sticking close to the house lately in case I have to make "the" call regarding her.
  6. I'm not familiar with Rodneys. I'm not looking for anything fancy - jeans and shirt kind of place. Just someplace to eat where I don't have to worry about cooties or kid boogers in the food on a buffet. LOL
  7. Other than Ryans (ugh), what local restaurants (West Cobb/Paulding) are you aware of that are doing a Thanksgiving lunch/dinner, and have you all tried them before?
  8. This is an odd one but I know nothing about this stuff. I know someone who says they have a bottle of rare wine that upon research, is worth probably around $400 or so. He wanted to know where you sell something like this. To my knowledge, individuals can't sell alcohol (even as a collectors thing) in Georgia, so if someone had something like this, how do you sell it? Auction? Through some type of store that sells it on consignment? I'm clueless - any ideas or knowledge you all have and I'll pass it on to them.
  9. Just a heads-up for those who like to "ink" themselves all over who might be planning a vacation to the Middle East this summer (lol): http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/blog/dirty-tackle/post/Saudis-arrest-Colombian-footballer-for-exposed-t?urn=sow-wp5693
  10. Well, if it was just the logo light "bleeding" through then that would have been ok. I could live with that since it didn't show up when you were using programs. But when the "tech rep" was trying to get me to update the bios and it wouldn't work - twice, I decided to turn in the towel on this machine. As a side note, I noticed when I went to pack up the machine that the brick (transformer) on the charging cord was EXTREMELY hot - as in, almost too hot to actually handle. Up till this point I actually hadn't touched the actual brick yet. It's normal for them to get warm, but not that hot
  11. I'm just going to pack this junk up and take it back to the store. I got on an online chat with India.. oh excuse me.. "HP", and was told to update the bios. Used their link to do it, and all it did was stall out the computer and made the system fan run extremely fast for a while until I unplugged it and pulled the battery - then it still didn't update the bios (after two attempts like this). All the rep would tell me is that there was something apparently wrong with it's ability to update the bios and they wanted me to ship it to them for repair. How about I pack it up, take it back
  12. I just noticed... this HP has a "glowing HP logo" on the cover (similar to an apple log on the Macbooks). It's in the lower corner, on the other side of the case as where this is appearing on the screen. Think this has something to do with it? A "reflection" of the logo light coming through?
  13. If I have to take this one back I'm just not going to get another laptop. I'll do without. Went through those two Acers that were duds in their own way, and if this really is a defective monitor, I'm through with it. In the last couple of years I'd say 95% of the stuff I've bought is either defective or missing parts or something else. I'm about to just buy food and what few clothes I need and stop buying electronics altogether. The economic recovery can bite it as far as this consumer is concerned - and fix itself without me spending my money anymore on anything but the very basics
  14. First an update on an older issue: A couple of weeks ago I had posted about weird noises coming from the 2nd Acer laptop I was wanting to get - just FYI, it turns out that yes, it was the hard drive going into standby mode making the clicks and noises, and according to my umpteenth try to call Acer, they said "those noises are normal, please ignore them". Um - no. So I took it back and swapped it for a HP. Neat little 14" screen model, as I need to use this at work, so it's with me all day, and very portable. But I do have one question for those who know about monitors and any quirky b
  15. I tried hitting del and also f8 and I can't find anything in the way of a hard drive acoustical management area (?). Maybe it's in a submenu but I'm not sure where to look from the main screen.
  16. UPDATE: A neighbor was playing with the laptop tonight and his conclusion so far: When the laptop is using it's battery for power, this is when this issue happens. It does not matter what power management setting you put it on, whether to conserve power, use more power, "balanced", etc... the intermittent hard drive whirring and clicks happen when you use the battery. When the laptop is plugged into A/C, it does not happen. Acer has no updates for this via the update utility that comes with it. Neither my old laptop, nor his laptop, nor his wife's however, do this when they use
  17. Well, it's setting on a hard top desk and not being moved, in a quiet room. There was no advertisement of a G-sensor in it either. The intermittent on and off again whirring of the hard drive and the 2-3 or so "clicks" per minute are happening when the computer is idol, but I'm noticing it when it's being used as well. As a frame of reference, if you're in a room with a TV going you really can't make it out unless you're trying to, but if you're in bed and even put some relaxing music on the laptop to run, you can hear the "clicks" through the music. I had a neighbor bring over thei
  18. A question for the computer people, more specifically those who know a good bit about the workings of laptops. Kind of need a quick answer if possible as it will help determine if I take this back tomorrow or not. I had an older Toshiba laptop that I had for years. It was a very solid and good laptop, and it ran very quietly. You would only hear the fan faintly in the background when it came on to cool the inside every now and again. Now, I got it on clearance something like 5 years ago, but back then the retail value of it was around $900, so it wasn't a low end unit. Very recent
  19. I think it came as a surprise to most folks as to just how much power DVRs and set top boxes use, even when you think you have them turned off. Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/26/us/26cable.html?pagewanted=all
  20. That's pretty much the exact thing I was going to suggest. Why pay a carrier money each month for an extra service to control your child's phone when all it takes is to hold your hand out before bed and say, "Hand it over until morning". (?). Straight Talk is a good option as many of their phones use AT&T (a few, Verizon) so they have the best coverage. But if you want even cheaper than $45, then Virgin Mobile has a 300 talk minute - unlimited text/data plan for only $35 per month. Now, VM only uses Sprint towers and can't roam as well as other phones, so if you live in the boonies
  21. A few months ago on the radio they mentioned this and they did so again today, so, a reminder: For the next couple of days, we are going to near 100 degrees in the area (actual temps). You should take this opportunity to go around your home and/or offices and turn any unnecessary electrical items OFF, when not in use. We've been lucky this year in that Brownouts/Blacksouts have been nearly nonexistent, but these temps really do tax the system as folks crank up their A/C and leave other things on. Tips: 1) Set your A/C to 75 degrees or higher. 2) Unplug your DVRs if not in u
  22. Just a heads-up... I had BAGS of old bills and crap I had been too lazy to shred at home and it piled up into something stupid. Driving to work today I saw a sign for "Free Shredding Today - Keep Powder Springs Beautiful". It's in the Powder Springs Industrial Park, off of Florence Road. Follow the small white signs. There's a warehouse on the corner of Fambrough and McNeel Industrial, and you pull in around back where the warehouse dock is. You can leave your stuff there, or, they will let you watch them put it in the large shredder they have. It's a company that takes stuff, shre
  23. Just a reminder: The Powder Springs Farmers market is starting up for the summer months today (Thur 6/2) in the town square old city hall parking lot. It runs each Thursday from 4pm to 8pm.
  24. I know the topic of pet sitters has been discussed on here before, but I know that they come and go, and more people use them over time who might like them (or not), etc etc. So I'm trying to get updated suggestions as of now (April 2011). I'm just looking for people who have references/reviews that do the West Cobb area. If I want to take a long day trip, I would need them to come over once or twice at most during the day to take the dog out for business, etc. Nothing elaborate. But I'm not one to lay out keys to my place for just anyone, so would like someone or some service that has
